Public saved by £3m grant

Thursday 9th July 2009, 11:30AM BST.

thepublicControversial Black Country arts centre The Public has had its future secured for the next two years by a £3 million bailout.

The cash award from the Arts Council means the troubled £63 million West Bromwich venue should finally be fully open by the end of the summer.

The Public opened more than a year ago – two years late. But the promised state-of-the-art interactive gallery inside never opened as experts could not get the hi-tech exhibits to work.

Planned admission charges of almost £7 per person for the gallery have now been scrapped and the whole venue will instead open to visitors for free, funded by the latest handout, until 2011.

Bob Badham, regeneration boss at Sandwell Council, said: “We will not be charging for the gallery, which will be free to visit and will open for public previews on the August Bank Holiday, to coincide with the Sandwell Show.

“All the money we need to run the arts centre until 2011 is in place. Sandwell Council will not be asking the taxpayer for more money.

“The centre will cost £1 million a year to run, which is a far lower spend on arts in any similar authority.

“After 2011 we are eligible to apply for the same grants as any other arts organisations to cover these costs.”

A new firm, Sandwell Arts Trust, will be set up next month to run the centre.

The Arts Council last night approved a new business plan, put together by Sandwell Council and Sandwell Leisure Trust, after an earlier plan was rejected in January.

Critics today remained unconvinced.

Councillor Tony Ward, opposition Conservative group leader at the council, said: “I can’t believe that Sandwell taxpayers will not be forced to bail out the project again at some point.”

Did anyone hear Bob Badham on the Ed Doolan show on Thursday morning??
Wow what planet does that guy live on? he actually believes the rubbish he spouts, simple answer to this monstrosity, sell it off and see how many people want to buy it or better still let him sell off his house and invest the money in the Public, strange how people are convinced something is a winner when they are using other peoples money!!!!!!

I have commented many times on this issue.
Whilst I agree in principle the need for an establishment that’s key objective is to add cultural value, clearly the people responsible for managing and executing this project were both ill advised and failed to connect with ‘public’ opinion. Local government is made up of too many forums, committees, strategies all with good intent but very rarely do they meet their original objectives. The people of Sandwell need a break and whilst it’s been sometime since I traveled through West Brom, my memories were of a town in desperate need of improvements in infrastructure & housekeeping. Only the people and the governing body can achieve this, Unfortunately, I fear that the majority of people in West Bromwich do not care enough and as we see all too often with British towns & cities, the gaps between those that do care and those who govern are to great to create and environment of change for the better effectively & efficiently.

As the organizer of Fudgestock I would agree with Bromwich Barmy. Thanks to the Public we had somewhere to put on our 5th Fudgestock show and the support was fantastic. Thanks to everyone who supported the event and all at the Public. To the critics visit and see for yourself this building is amazing

Just a point in all this,as far as I remember the running costs for this building BERFORE cutbacks were £500,000 which is what the grant from the Arts Council covered.
Why is MR badham now telling us that the costs are now £1 million per year??

KY wolf, the main problem with West Bromwich is that its been high jacked by councillors who’s only interest in the Borough is to maximise the number of meeting they can arrange in order to maximise their claims for meetings expenses!!!!!!

I remember in the 60’s, I was one of the TA members who marched with fixed bayonets along West Bromwich High Street, the TA Unite stationed at Carters Green had been awarded the Freedom of the Borough, all you could hear was the sound of men marching behind the Core Band, there was a sense of pride in our Borough, then Sandwell Council happened and it went downhill from there.

We used to shop at West Bromwich every Thursday morning, in recent years I have been there twice in about 6 years, that was twice to many, West Bromwich is a dump, the planners put into operation their own ideas with no thought at all for the potential customers who may have used it.

The most efficient service that the council imposed was the parking enforcement division, they have done the same in Bearwood High Street, I walked down there the other day and counted 10 empty business premises, you restrict or penalise motorists enough and they go elsewhere, I live 10 minutes walk from Bearwood, I would rather drive to Merry Hill where I know I am not going to receive a parking ticket for whatever reason and I know I can find a parking space.

The Car Parks in West Bromwich are all pay and display and are situated 10 or 15 minutes walk away from the shopping centre, what clown thought of that idea?????? Merry Hill is surrounded by numerous car parks all adjacent to the shops and its all free parking, and the main thing is it’s clean, if I had to choose between visiting West Bromwich or the local tip I would choose the tip every time at least its clean.
