Mick: Result is not important
Thursday 9th July 2009, 2:35PM BST.
Mick McCarthy has warned Wolves fans not to read anything into the club’s first friendly against Perth Glory.
Last night Fulham, who are also in Australia for pre-season, were beaten 2-1 by the Gold Coast on the opposite side of the country.
Perth feature two new signings from Derby who played in Wolves’ 3-2 win at Pride Park on Easter Monday – Andy Todd and ‘marquee signing’ Miles Sterjovski. “This is our first friendly after being off for two months,” said the Wolves boss.
“I think if anyone had two months away from their jobs, they’d be a bit rusty, no matter what you’re doing. It just takes you a while to get back into it.
‘This is about getting fit – it’s not about us having a great result against Perth Glory all through pre-season and then getting slapped on the first day against West Ham.”
Both Wolves and Perth Glory managers have ordered their players not to launch into studs-up tackles in tomorrow’s game.
Wolves will face debutant Todd, not known for his pleasantries on the pitch during a career with Bolton, Blackburn and Derby.
But his lofty central defensive partner isn’t one to strike fear into the opposition.
For Jamie Harnwell, Glory captain and their longest-serving player , goes by the nickname of Handbags.
“It started when I first came here in 1999,” said Harnwell.
“A couple of Kiwis (one was former Walsall defender Danny Hay) thought my name was Handwell, so that was changed to Handbags and it’s stuck ever since.
“I don’t mind it really. I’s quite funny – although it can get a bit much sometimes.”
