DIY business celebrates 50 years

A DIY business specialising in sheds and greenhouses in Chasetown is celebrating its 50th birthday.
Collis DIY, otherwise known as Collis Sheds, is still a family run business, which specialises in timber, DIY products, fencing, sheds, greenhouses, summerhouses, stables and a wide range of other buildings.
The business was started in 1959 by Guy Ernest Collis, a former coal miner, who founded the company at its original premises in Cottage Lane with takings of around £50 per week.
In 1961, the business moved to its current base, the old Chasetown Gas Works, on Queens Drive.
This site was around two-and-a half-acres and enabled “Ernie” Collis the opportunity to expand the business further which was eventually taken over by sons Keith and Gordon.
Today, the business is run by grandson, Steven Collis who has continued to drive the business forward offering a wider range of products and delivering buildings on a nationwide basis.
They employ 26 staff, many of which have been there for over 40 years.
Manager John Cantrill has been with the business for 24 years and has seen a number of changes as the business has continued to expand its product offering.
Steven Collis said: “I put our success down to the high level of customer service we provide. Our staff have a great deal of knowledge and experience and are able to share this with our customers.
“I am looking forward to being able to pass the business down to my two children Amy,15, and Joe,13, in the future who can continue the family tradition.”
Throughout its 50 years, the business has been supported by Barclays.
Simon Freeman, Barclays relationship manager, said: “It’s great to see a business that has been around for as long as Collis DIY, surviving today.
“I am proud of the long association that Barclays has with the business and look forward to its continued success.”
