Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Mancienne is Wolves top target
Wednesday 8th July 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Michael Mancienne is one of three more signings Wolves want before the transfer window closes.
Wolves aim to secure the Chelsea defender on a season-long loan to climax their summer-long recruitment drive.
Chelsea won’t allow the England under-21 international to leave Stamford Bridge on a permanent deal.
But the signs are new boss Carlo Ancelotti will be willing to allow him to gain more experience in the Premier League on a temporary basis – and Wolves are heading the queue after his successful loan spell last season. The signs are the other two targets are very much players for the future – with another possible loan recruit from the Premier League, with each top-flight club allowed two.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “Michael has never left our thinking but I don’t think Chelsea will allow him to leave on a permanent basis.
“We’ve not necessarily finished our business. We haven’t used a loan yet so they are available to us. We may be able to use one of these but we may need to wait for a Premier League club to say, ‘yes, you can have him’.
“But that might not be until towards the end of the transfer window.”
Of the other targets, Moxey said: “We’re open-minded, but we’re looking more at fringe-type players. But we might do something bigger than that because potentially we have loans available.”
Wolves have already signed six players – Marcus Hahnemann, Nenad Milijas, Kevin Doyle, Ronald Zubar, Andrew Surman and Greg Halford.
Milijas, Zubar and trialist Bobo Balde were due to arrive today at the club’s Australian training camp.
But boss Mick McCarthy still wants more signings to maintain competition for places and they have been linked with Real Betis’ German international winger David Odonkor.
Freed Derby striker Paris Simmons, 19, has also been linked with a trial at Wolves. He played under Molineux Academy boss Kevin Thelwell at the Rams.
And reports today claimed Wolves and Burnley are fighting it out to sign £2m-rated Hamilton starlet James McCarthy.
The attacker was voted the best young player in Scotland last season.

Mancienne & Zubar at the back then for the start of the season.
One quick and fast.
The other quick and strong.
Stearman will end up at somewhere like Sheff Utd and Berra will be on the bench.

If we can get in both Mancienne and McCarthy, then I think we’ll have had an excellent transfer window. Get it done Jez!
shall I be the first to say it…Fringe players, What!!! Thats all we’ve signed…we need experience etc, etc… LOL. Don’t worry boys we are looking more than alreeeeeet! So CHILLAX!!!! Mancienne will be coming, hopefully we beat Burnley to McCarthy, Nolan to come in by the sounds of it plus the German lads (injuries behind him due to successful surgery) and another loan, Ramsay, Macheda or similar perhaps.
German lad! sorry. is the Leko deal dead as that seemed almost done and for 1.5 Mil we’d be laughing.
Think this could be a good time to be a wolves fan,i can see us being mid table….WE ARE WOLVES
Report abuse
Wolvesmod, quick AND fast eh?! I like the sound of that!!
Stearman will be going nowhere, one of the best young defenders in the country he will be staying put, fact!
we need now for loyal wolves supporters to back what management are trying to acheive. this is better than we have had for a long time…up the wolves lets give afew a shock.
I meant young and quick lol.
I’d like us to pull of a surprise and go for a bit of South American flair, so sign an Argie or a Brazilian, Mick. Let’s get the Mol’ rocking.
I take it Henry is going to be our Premiership captain then? Meh.
Come all ye faithfu!
Fantastic if we can get Mancienne even if on loan for season, Mc carthy would also be a good signing meaning good transfer window on the young and hungry front.
However where is the one big name with prem experience ie Nolan Scholes etc belive it would need to be mid as feeling confident in majority of squad to keep us up

Faithfull Oops

anyone else heard the rumour that jez was seen in a hotel restaurant in stafford with papa bouba diop on monday??
Unlike the current wolves regime for things like this to be leaked before they’re completed, so presume we pretty far down the road with this one. Perhaps just waiting for Mancienne to return from holiday as the U21′s only finished last monday.
Will be chuffed if it goes through.
The one worry is that it mentions in the article that any further will perhaps only be fringe players or “ones for the future”. Surely we’re still in dire need of one or two experienced prem players. As the majority of the signings so far are either young & promising CCC players, or foreigners (which are always a gamble). Even mancienne, as good as he is, and as desperate as i am to see him back, has little or no prem experience.
See Mick’s last prem adventure with sunderland to find out what happens when the majority of your signings are from the CCC. In short, you end up back there.

winslow wolf – your comment made me chuckle,
quick and fast, bet hes also strong and powerful!
11. Clever and intelligent too perhaps!
Mancienne has got to go to a Prem club on loan (rule out Reading who he was linked with) and they must be a clube where he is going to get a game and not sit on the bench (otherwise he may as well stay where he is)
It’s a sensible move for Wolves, Chelsea and Mancienne himself so this one must be odds on to go through.
I have a feeling Mick might get another striker in…he likes to have plenty of backup there.
Looking at our signings compared to Blues…we’ve blown them away with our signings (and we were starting as a better team than them anyway). And Joey Barton on loan…you could have guessed that one.
12. Reverend, what do you think of the signing of Surman?
9. Wolvesmod I actually agree with you…you can’t beat a good Brazilian mate.
I don’t think i’m alone in seeing Michael Mancienne as one of the most promising young defenders that England has produced for a long time, and for one would love to see him at the wolves next season in whatever capacity we can get him…
However, i really think we still need a midfield lynchpin to play along side Milijas. namely Kevin Nolan!
“We’re open-minded, but we’re looking more at fringe-type players. But we might do something bigger than that because potentially we have loans available.”
Does that mean there will only now be fringe and loan signings? Not moaning, as our squad has really come together over the last 4 weeks and i’m very proud to be a Wolves fan right now, but IMO snapping up Kevin Nolan could be a real coup…
Report abuse
david odonkor would be a great signing as i said befor he’s very fast not frightend to take on defenders i would go as far as to say he’s as fast as michael kitely if not faster
Report abuse
Fringe players?! With the exception of Doyle, Milijas and possibly Zubar I thought all the other summer signings were already fringe players!
Surely we need 1 or 2 more Premier League experienced players. We couldn’t even beat Middlesboro at home last season with our team, and they were relegated!
Mancienne back at the club would be amazin, it is easy to say that out defence went to shit when we lost him, not that it maters because we still won the league.
also odonkor and McCarthy at the club would be very good.
I am looking forward to this season, got some great signings in and we are going to give the premier league a shock as so many people have wrote us off
Report abuse
GOLD AND PROUD..
THIS IS GREAT..
rudolf, your the biggest pessimistic person i have ever seen, your the type of wolves fan who moans at whatever happens. i bet you booed keogh and i bet in micks second season you wanted him out, wolves dont need you, so do one
Report abuse
PEOPLE WHO ARE MOANING —– PLEASE TELL ME ONE PLAYER STOKE SIGNED LAST SEASON WITH PREM EXPERIENCE ??????????????? APART FROM DAVE KITSON WHO WAS SUCH A HIT LOLOL
Report abuse
Sorry for a concern more than a moan. Firstly i rate Stearman over all the other centre backs and i see Mancienne more as a right back, infact i would rather sign another central midfielder with prem experience, something we were promised but not really delivered. Hopefully all will rise and become prem stars for the future but i would rather someone like Nolan from Newcastle. I dont think any of the buys are rubbish just would like one old campaigner in there.
On reading back my post it sounds very negative. Didn’t mean to be at all. Am delighted with the signings so far, and would fancy us to suprise a few even if we didn’t sign another player. Just think an experienced head or two and we’d be looking at mid table as opposed to just survival.

It’s now the early part of the week that Sam Chalmers refered to last week suggesting we we’re going to make a big surprise signing. Looks like your source has let you down this time Sam

I agree with No.2 “Toon wolf” and if we can add David Odonkor and possibly Nolan we’re looking really good for the season ahead. 19,500 season tickets sold aswell. Come on u wolves

oh JUST remembered Higgingbottom lol :-)
Come on Lads the future is bright .
Nolan and Leko and this german lads looks good.. hopefully Jarvo will be fit all season I think he will be a big player for us next season…
Up the wolves

I agree with (2)Toon wolf and if we could get David Odonkor and possibly Nolan things are looking realy good for the season ahead!!!!
sorry posted that twice sumhow

Just got odds of 80/1 for seb to be top goalscorer got to be worth a few quid.
anyone agree?
All this ‘We need prem experienced players etc’ is total B******S. It’s simple gents all football is, is jumpers for goal posts 11 a side and that’s it. The boys can play and I have already nipped down Ladbrokes and had a tenner on that we do the treble, Bring on the big boys that’s what I say. 19,500 season tickets and then a full house every game we have nothing to fear.
Come on the Wolves….he who dares rodders he who dares!!!

33)TONY WOLF. Top Premiership scorer ? I’d want better than that.
I had Bully to score in the 1990 World Cup Final @ 250/1 and he was stripped off to come on in the Semis. How close was that ?
Closer than a Brazilian at the Mol !
33.
Yeah cos’ he’s better than the favourite, Torres.
33. be worth a tenner mate.
I think if we got Kevin Nolan, Mancienne and Odonkor, we are set.
I see that Bowyer is signing for blues today and they are trying to get joey barton on loan!
33. Wherd u get those odds??? Definitely worth a cheeky tenner

I was at the training session today, the lads seem to be gelling well, TC does work em hard.
The run they do around the WACA – you can hear and see the lads reaching their limit!
I spoke to Big George Elokobi – I reckon he is going to be a hit this season he is very determined and it’s evident in his attitude. Got to speak to MM too, the man does not mince his words, he knows whats good for the club i.e. getting Doyle and Surman – big hitters. Have faith in this man! Kighty is looking very sharp too. But it was amazing to see these boys in this end of the globe.
I should really learn and be patient in mick we trust the players will come and we will stay up maybe even surprise a few and be mid table
Come on wolves…
Report abuse
We need a top class midfielder 1 that can hold the ball, bit like henry but 1 that’s prem class.
……….C’MON U WOLVES………….
would love to see him back at molineux. we messed up abit with Oguchi Onyewu the USA international, chance to sign him at the start of the transfer window now AC Milan have snapped him up. Typical!
Of course we all know of Mancienne but McCarthy would be a great signing (any relation?) with massive potential. If we really want him I would have thought we could easliy outdo Burnley!
Please let’s not dismiss Richard Stearman – he is improving all the time and I think he has a big future with us.
25. HMMM ABDOULAYE FAYE MAYBE??? Seriously mate, calm yourself with the use of Capital letters…
Odonkor, Mancienne and Nolan I’d be extremely happy, forget Balde or sign him till end of season only.
Oooh… Zheng Zhi is without a club after rejecting an offer from Charlton, A possible alternative to Nolan maybe??
Would initally have liked experienced Premier players. But believe Cherry picking of the top Championship stars a very good alternative, and far cheaper. Believe a couple of more signings hopefully Mancienne and a 5 million bonus-pot for players to keep us in the Premier would guarentee survival next season. After that things can only get better
Report abuse
You get more time on the ball in the Premiership. You’ll be surprised. Henry may look class.
That’s why i think we’ll surprise a few and finish comfortably mid table.
Well done you guys. You’re really getting your act together with your team building – something the Baggies failed to do last year. Good luck for new season.

25. Abdoulaye Faye from newcastle , Amdy Faye from Charlton, Beattie Sheff utd, Etherington west ham, Sorenson villa, Higginbothem from Sunderland, Sonko from Reading, then there the likes of Ricardo Fuller, Salif Diao Rory Delap Simonsen, Andy Griffin who all had previous experience weather most of them are good or not they had more experience then anything else
Report abuse
Felt compelled to tell ya to go look on youtube and type in ‘Nenad milijas compilation’ cant wait for the season to start
Report abuse
You can feel the sparks in the air as we build for the start of the season
and you feel great when a baggie says we are getting it right
o wot a change from years gone by
Report abuse
if we get Mancienne on a seasons loan than were nearly done signings wise. Best defender I’ve seen not just at Molineux he has the potential to one of the greats. Cool head strong, good in the air, can play in midfield in a viera type role. No fluke he got a full england call up. If i had the cash ( as would many other on here ) I’d buy him myself. you may think lack of experience, but look who plays, trains with. I dont think he would be lacking in experience somehow !! Still would like to see a ince type of player, ( wish he was 7 years younger !!! ) Nolan ??? Pederson ??? happy with who we have signed so far, though esp surman, quality. Briely hill baggie, good luck next season and fingers crossed see you next season !!! come on you wolves !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Brierly Hill Baggie, and hope you guys make it back at the next attempt. You can’t beat ‘the’ derby game that means the most. Always a great day out but just snnoying that they never put it on much as a championship fixture for those of us who have moved abroad. At least when we are both premiership we will get to see all the Wolves/Brom games.
33. I got 70/1 on him being top ENGLISH goalscorer in the prem next season. Much better odds. Save your money lad
Report abuse
54. Thats a great shout.
I think we have alot of young quality who are only going to improve. I am very impressed with the signings so far and all the bookies are tipping us to survive which is very positive considering we will have by far the youngest squad in the premiership.
Michael Mancienne and Kevin Nolan would be superb additions and possibly Aaron Ramsay on loan?
For those people who are saying we will not win anything without prem experience. Apart from Doyle having bucket loads of prem experience you are right, there are not many players who have prem experience.
Zubar – Champions League experience
Milijas – UEFA cup experience and international experience.
Surman – Under 21 experience, up and coming needs to grow
Halford – The most underated signing we have made.
The players we have bought in all do need prem experience, but so did the players Everton, Villa, Man City (in the past), Tottenham and all top prem clubs have bought good quality lower league players.
It simply does not add up, that if you buy good CCC players, then you end up back there.
THe reason Mick did not stay up last time, was he was given no money. £6million TOTAL transfer kitty was never going to be enough. We spent that on the fee for Doyle. Think about it.
