Sylvan’s sights on full England cap

Tuesday 7th July 2009, 11:00AM BST.

WOLVES 15 GD 29Wolves goal-king Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has set his sights on winning a full England cap.

Fabio Capello’s set-up have told the under-21 international an England shirt awaits him – if he carries on scoring.

Double Championship Golden Boot winner Ebanks-Blake has rattled in 37 goals in just 61 games for Wolves since his bargain £1.5million move from Plymouth in January 2008, including 25 to fire Mick McCarthy’s side to the Championship title.

The striker said: “It’s down to me – if I produce on the pitch in the Premier League, then I’m in no doubt there’s every chance I’ll be considered.

“The set-up encourages everyone to step up to the seniors, it’s a natural progression.

“I haven’t been singled out – there might have been other players, but I don’t think I have personally.

“As under-21 players and the age groups under that, we get encouraged to step up into the seniors.

“That’s what you want in football, to play at the highest level.”

Ebanks-Blake knows he has a long way to go to join Wayne Rooney and Co.

The 23-year-old missed out on the recent European under-21 championships through injury and similarly-aged rivals Gabriel Agbonlahor and Theo Walcott have the advantage of Premier League experience.

But he feels he has the ability to take his form into the Premier League.

Ebanks-Blake said: “Self-belief is very important and I’ve got that in abundance. I have a self-belief that I can do well given a run of games in a good team which we’ve got here.

“We all get there at different times in our careers and at 23, I’m quite happy with how I’m progressing.”

Last season’s top scorer knows he must score goals in the Premier League to be considered by Capello.

The forward added: “I can’t score goals in a league I haven’t played in. Until or unless I do that, I’m pretty much in the same boat as anyone.

“If I do well, I’ve got every chance and if I don’t, I won’t.

“I just get on with playing football – it’s not going to happen if I get distracted by it.”

The name says it all! You can do it Sylvan, i’m certain he’ll make the squad for the world cup, hes a born goalscorer. i just hope he don’t get snapped up by the big boys in January or next year… i’m sure they’re going to be sniffing.

SEB is a natural scorer and will score in the PL too if he will get the right back-up from the wingers and a stronger inner midfield than last season.

    Good hunting SEB!

    4. “Cant do no worse than the lot we got at the moment?” We are top of the group and easily on course for the World Cup finals…..? You say it like they are doing a bad job???? As for Odonkor, i bet Youtube doesnt show the 3 operations over the past few seasons does it. All on the same knee as well, why pay 4 million for a bloke who we will see for about 10 games if that. pointless agent talk, i doubt very much any of the 3M’s would even consider spending that much on an injury prone player.

Gold and Black – Think about what you’re saying! England haven’t dropped a point this qualifying campaign scoring half as many more goals than any other team in Europe which must make them one of the most prolific teams in international football.

Agree with kiddywolf (12). If SEB & Doyle can get 10+ a piece we should be fine. Midfield and out wide are vital though, as they’re not gonna score if we can’t get the ball to them in and around the box.

Kights and Jarvo will make the step up fine, but looking at their injury records we’re gonna need more cover in those areas. Also, we’re still crying out for a CM who can put his foot in, but can also burst forward and pick a killer pass to release SEB & KD (maybe milijas is that player, don’t know his game). I’m sure that the 3 M’s are working hard on this behind the scenes though as they have done all summer. Got a feeling we may have to wait until after the Oz trip to see any more major signings unveiled.

Forgot to comment on the actual article. :)

Keep banging them in Sylv and you’ll be pulling on the three lions before you know it.

In the past he would have struggled to get a sniff under the likes of eriksson & mcclaren as it was the same old faces picked regardless of form. It different now though as cappello picks on form, isn’t afraid to give new blood a go in friendlies (which is what they should be used for), and isn’t scared of putting a big names nose of joint by dropping them if they deserve it (eg. owen).

This is interesting – AC Milan have signed United States defender Oguchi Onyewu from Standard Liege.

13 – In the modern age its a good tool to see our signings for the first time and see if they are any good. I do however understand the point that its usually the bad points in the clips. People mentioned Zubar’s og and pens but didn’t mention the great strike he had for the French Under 21′s (check it out!)

I prefer to use a tool called FM scout. According to that the two foreign lads have a higher current ability than our players. That will do for me at the moment, until I get to see them in real life.

wolves4eva, agree with that team, but would pick stearman (or a new CB signing) ahead of berra . Also, don’t believe Halford is a CM so would put Henry in there (or hopefully a new signing, don’t think Karl will be good enough but he may suprise us).

As soon as we got promoted I said SEB could be the surprise addition to the full England squad, and some non wolves supporters thought I was losing my marbles, but really who’s going to keep him out of the squad if he starts scoring in the Prem? Rooney’s a cert, Crouch will be in & Owen might get back into contention, but then who? Defoe? Bent? They can hardly be described as goal-machines!
SEB fire a few in and a place in the squad has to be yours

There is no reason at all why he can’t get a run out. The first four games give him ample opportunity to score a few.
In terms of England, Rooney is first choice and then you have Crouch and Defoe. Owen might get himself back in the frame. As for Agbonlahor, Cole and Bent – not good enough. Walcott is more of a threat out wide.
One or two more signings and I have no worries whatsoever!

On one hand I would love to see Blake in an England shirt. On the other I would be worry that if he proves to be the next shearer, we wouldn’t be able to hang on to him. Hopefully himself and wolves can progress up the league together. As for Odonkor, he was seen as one to watch for Germany at the last world cup and he did well. He’s very similar to jarvis in the way he plays. If not for his injures I’d say 4 mil would be a great signing. Its a big question mark though.

    Simon in Oklahoma!

SEB is good under pressure and a clinical finisher. I don’t think Premiership defences will affect his ability to score…its just he’ll have far fewer chances coming his way than he’s used to.

My prediction is he’ll get half the chances & therefore get half the goals…so 12-15 Premiership goals… and an England shirt.
