Mick’s medal surprise for directors
Friday 3rd July 2009, 9:20AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy had a surprise for the club’s directors at this week’s board meeting.
Back in May, every member of the club’s squad, backroom staff and McCarthy received medals after Wolves clinched the Championship title.
In addition, chief executive Jez Moxey and club secretary Richard Skirrow also received medals.
But the trio also felt that both Morgan and the club’s directors – John Gough, John Bowater and Bob Laslett – also deserved a unique memento of the Championship-winning campaign.
Unbeknown to the board, Moxey arranged for a photographer to follow McCarthy into the room, after the manager arranged for replicas of the medals to be produced and then presented to the unsuspecting quartet at the board meeting on Monday.
Moxey said: “Although clearly it is Mick, the backroom staff and players who deserve the main plaudits for the Championship winning success, there is also an incredible amount of work that goes on behind the scenes by the board.
“It was our belief that Steve, the two Johns and Bob should receive a Championship medal in recognition of their unstinting efforts on behalf of the club over the last year.
“It’s not often we are able to surprise Steve, but it was great to see his face and the other guys as well, when we interrupted our important board meeting to make the presentation.
“They were all genuinely surprised and thrilled to receive their medals, so will no doubt treasure them just as much as everyone else who received one.”
