Wolves the right call for Halford
Friday 3rd July 2009, 11:00AM BST.
Wolves’ new boy Greg Halford revealed an early approach from boss Mick McCarthy convinced him moving to Molineux was the right choice.

Six-foot four utility man Halford has signed a three-year deal, plus an option for a further 12 months, after settling a minor matter with Sunderland.
He will be unveiled on the club’s tour of Australia, for which they depart tomorrow.
The 24-year-old becomes Wolves’ third signing of the week, to follow club-record £6.5million Kevin Doyle and £1.2million Andrew Surman.
It takes the summer captures to five, after £2.6million Serbia midfielder Nenad Milijas and free transfer goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.
Now Halford had told of how McCarthy’s early call to Sunderland – which echoed the manager’s sales pitch to Doyle – was key to persuading him.
The player said; “I know there has been interest from Wolves for a while and apparently a call went in not long after the play-off final.
“That went a long way to making up my mind to be honest, how keen the manager was to get the deal done.
“It always plays a big part when a manager shows how much he wants you to join.
“I’d also heard a lot of good things about him from other people.”
Halford has twice moved for £2.5million, to Reading and Sunderland respectively, only to be jettisoned within months after three and eight League games respectively for Reading and Sunderland.
But he feels Sunderland’s loss might be Wolves’ gain, after Sheffield United’s failure to win promotion cost them his signing.
He said: “Trying to prove myself in the Premier League is another main reason for the move.
“I thought I did well in the Championship last season, but want to do well in the Premier League as well.
“There probably wasn’t going to be that chance for me at Sunderland, but I’m delighted to take the opportunity of trying with Wolves.”
Halford cannot wait to get started with his new club.
He said: “I’m really excited about moving down to Wolves.
“It’s going to be an exciting season for the club going into the Premier League. Hopefully we can push on and establish ourselves in the division.
“Wolves are a big club and the infrastructure is all there.
“There’s a great training ground, great stadium and a large fanbase. All the plans are in place for Wolves to really establish themselves.”
Halford is the latest of a long line of under-25′s to be signed under the club’s hugely successful ‘young and hungry’ policy.
The former Colchester man is delighted to be linking up with players of similar age and mindset.
He said: “I think I’m probably going to be one of the oldest in the entire squad!
“There are some very good young players here and the fact there are so many probably helps at one level.
“Players of a similar age have been through the same experiences and also have the same hunger.
“I think that should stand us in good stead in terms of team spirit.”
The 6ft 4ins defender scored eight goals in 49 games on loan at Sheffield United, including the header that put them into the play-off final against Burnley last season.
Halford boasts the weapon of a Rory Delap-style throw and is Mr Versaility.
He wants to be a central midfielder, but he’s spent his career playing different roles.
Right-back to Wolves’ left-back George Elokobi during Colchester’s 2005-06 League One promotion as runners-up, he operated for much of last season on the right of midfield.
But his headed winner in the play-off semi-finals came while he has operating wide left.

come on lads lets get him signed thought we would of had him today he os top class trust me 3 of my mates are sheffield untired fans and they was saying how good he was and how gutted they are to lose him so come on sign him lol
Report abuse
It would be great to have him on board as a player my only doubt is what’s his attitude like? Obviously our present lads have a good spirit and team ethos but I’m sure Mick would not sign a tearaway would he?
Looks as though we are going to have to wait for Ledley and Mancienne and possibly Matt Mills now doesn’t it?
So what is his best position? It’s all a bit confusing!
I hear we are close to signing Irish captain and former Mick favourite, Richard Dunne.
Can Coppell and Keane both be so wrong about this bloke?
I fear we are in danger of buying up a squad that might just not be good enough, we need at least a couple of genuine premiership players.
Number 3
Is that a dunne deal then! Sorry m8 couldn’t resist it!
Seriously though we need another quality striker for when Seb or Doyle get injured, which could happen at anytime. We also need a quality scoring midfielder – Mr Ledley please and we need cover on the wings – enter Mr Duff please then we should be close to being able to compete..
He sounds like an ideal player for us. He has played full back, centre half, central and wide midfielder.
The good news with Surman also is that he can play left back. Hill is probably not good enough cover and although Ward excelled there last year, the Premiership is a step up.
Richard Dunne? Not very good for Man City last season!
With the signings we have made this week and the news that milijas got his work permit should keep the moaners quiet for a while then again i doubt it.i am looking forward to seeing these lads in the old gold i have predicted a midtable finish.
then we can build on that.would love to see mancienne and robbie keane back in wolves shirts thats wishful thinking.

Nothing to report then.

Im happy with the signings so far,Just think we need a bit of real premier experience, like huddlestone,pennant,gardner,reo-coker,fraizer campbell, just a few names to band around

our team/squad is already better than hull & burnley on paper – and arguably better than wigan, bolton, sunderland, blues, blackburn, stoke etc…
the window isn’t closed yet so that could all change with us and the teams i’ve mentioned.
but at the moment (on paper) we only have to come above one maybe two above teams to stay up (if were all right in expecting burnley and hull will struggle)
also if the worst happens and we go down we’ve got the best of the champ and players who will likely stay! unlike when we last went down we had 10 or so players depart who all played several matches
at the moment our side will cope vs 12 of prem sides, we’ll get majorly outclassed vs other 8 but at moment all isnt as bad as you think
Report abuse
Hennessey, Foley, Elekobi, Berrra, Stearman, Kightly, Jarvis, Melijas, Henry, Blake, Doyle.
subs: Surman, Halford, Hannehman…………
As great as the signings are for the squad, can anyone see three of them not on the bench?
We are going to suprise a few next season no doubt but we need experienced centre backs who are going to start. Not moaning, all signings so far are great for the team.

Thats it all reject, will go to Wolves. They should advertise. Any unwanted players should go to wolves. They have all rejects!!!!!!

HI BOYS, I’M BACK!!!
HOPE YOU’RE ALL WELL.
WOW NICE TO SEE SOME DECENT SIGINGS MADE WHILE I’VE BEEN AWAY. LOOKIN’ GOOD SO FAR, CAN’T WAIT TO THIS SEASON STARTED.
STAYIN’ UP THE WANDERERS WAY, IN STYLE OF COURSE OH YES!!.

well done mick and jez. brilliant all round player and quite consistent. Im glad weve finally signed him as many a club were intersted in securing his services. He should play more forward. i dont think he should be left out of the starting 11 as this guy has quality and i think he’ll deliver in the prem. how about jones and halford in cm with kightly on the wing??
not good enough, maybe good as a squad player but realistically we need way better, sunderland fans dont rate him

BIT EARLY AIN’T IT FOR NEGATIVES, WE’VE REACHED THE PROMISED LAND NOW SO LET’S GET BACK TO SUPPORTING THE BOYS PROPERLY SHALL WE!!
Before we get all the negatives let’s remember our ‘star’ player SEB is a ‘reject’ from Man United. I think we have some great signings and hopefully there will be money in the coffers at the midway point when the signings will be even more vital (although hopefully we won’t need anyone else at that point!).
A fair signing which will strengthen the squad. I think the club will bring in a few more players yet though. We need a good centre back, central midfielder and an extra striker, plus cover for Kites.
At his age this is his big chance to do well. he obviously wasn’t rated by Keene and being in the ‘wilderness’ will probably have made him more determined to succeed. Reckon he’ll do well but if he wants to replace Foley then he’ll need a lot more than he’s shown thus far.
Great week for us. Now lets dump the Australians -without getting injuries – and the season ‘run – up’ will be fine.

Tim u r a numpty we have signed no rejects b realistic we can’t afford 10 million pound players this year we have to take mick’s opinion as said and to be fair he has’nt done bad ESB KIGHTS STEARMAN all u21 England Plus all the other internationals we now have I’m sure you will agree we are in a better position now with a group of players and staff that will take this club to the next level and then maybe we can happily talk about 10 million plus players but untill then let the molineux be the big money signing GOLD & BLACK

10 WE8WBA How is our squad arguably better than wigan, bolton, sunderland, blues, blackburn, stoke,Some of these Teams have survived in the Prem for quite a while now.Not a moan but an obvious observation that i am not alone in posting,It is alright having a young and hungry Squad but we really do need some experienced premiership players onboard. The defence conceded far to many last season and as we saw in 2003 it is a whole new ball game in the prem. Two or three big signings are now required to supplement the young guns and hopefully lead us into a seson of premiership consilidation.

my information is still one major signing to come in next 7 days, a player wanted by Morgan with premiership experience.
Also, watch out for some news while Wolves are in OZ, not expected to return empty handed, but not with an inexperienced local.
my contact assured all over two weeks ago that Doyle would sign, and has been good value to date.

mick has the manager quality to make an average player into a young and hunger excelent player.let him and his staff work their magic…we are wolves..
Very sensible signing imo, he provides quality cover for the wings, cm and right back. Also Surman dooes the same but on the left. Very good signings as we no have quality in depth rather than numbers in depth! UTW

HAPPY, i can see foley moving to more of a midfield role in the future.
Now we need cover on the left, why not go for BALE from spurs on loan for the season?
No 12 You are a first class dope at the highest degree. A lot of players have been rejected at some point in there time. Just look at the squad that got us promotion. Hennessey rejected by Man City, Blake an original United boy. Do your homework on Wigan, Bolton etc and the same story will apply. Just go to English lessons and stop being a plank.

In the Prem it’s more of a squad game, so I don’t think there’s an obvious first eleven, with the rest obvious second stringers. MM will vary the team (and probably formation too) according to the opposition, and I suspect only seven or eight nailed-on regulars. For example, if he wants to get defensive, put Foley into the midfield as the holding player, or if he wants to get physical, load up with Berra, Stearman, Elokobi and Halford. We may not be able to afford two quick and skillful (but lightweight) wingers in the team very often – for fear of conceding the midfield.
The other obvious point is that MM&M have set the expectation, and we’re all hoping for, a couple of big signings – and we’ll probably get a couple more squad players, too – so it’s a bit early to be picking the team.
Shaping up nicely though, hey ?
Keep The Faith.

How can anyone compare Dunne to Collins???
One has been a proven Premiership defender for years, and arguably one of Citys best players for the past seasons.
The other doesnt posses quality for Championship, let alone Premiership.
Getting Dunne would be massive bargain. He is quality, experienced, and would be the perfect leader for our young and hungry lads.

Another Championship player…!
And before I get slated again, yes I agree players like Lescott and Jagielka have done well since they left the Championship, however they went to established Premier League clubs.
How many times have newly promoted teams had success with Championship players… a few but not many. Stoke and Hull bought majority Premier League players, and thats why they have stayed up. I’m afraid we’re going down the Sandwell Town route, which will always end in relegation.
Good to see that the squad is being extended by some good catches.
IMO we now need a mid-field General, another Mike Bailey type of player, otherwise we will be too soft in mid-field for the Premiership.
foley will stay at right back.
Halford will play centre mid/ wide left like he did for sheff utd. Henry dropped to the bench.
Need central def’s now.
Hopefully zubar and not dunne/callum davidson

On a serious note I have to say that our buying so far had been solid, well thought out and well executed. Blues seemed to have policy of grabbing players quickly against a concern that they would all be gone if they didn’t get their first. I think they paid over the odds, didn’t really have an overall plan and are probably now scratching their heads about where everyone will play and how they will pay the bills!
The quality and balance of players we have signed so far has been excellent – if we can pick up an experineced campaigner or two like Dunne I don’t think we can ask for anything more at this stage.
Well done Jezz, Mick and Steve….

Again another good addition to the squad, well done MMM.
However does anybody else not share my concerns with the left back position. Yes we have an abundance of them, but none of which that i feel can make the grade in the Premiership.
Stephen Ward, whom i would like to say was great at filling in in the Championship, and how people still criticise him i just don’t understand. I feel will struggle in the top level, through lack of ability not effort i hasten to add.
Elokobi, i am still not convinced and wonder why so many wolves fans get carried away in the hysteria – very similar to what we were subjected to with Mo Camara.
Matt Hill is just plain Championship standard. Daniel Jones is one for the future if Mac sees it that way.
And Collins please someone get him a taxi to Sandwell.
I agree with the comments on Bale that would be a good acquisition, Joe Ledley or even Lee Naylor, who has now gained experience of big matches in Old Firm and Europe.
Just a thought what do you all think??
We are building up a good squad of young hungry players that are still developing, and that includes SEB. When you look at the business that has been done by any other premier clubs Wolves are out in front on the recruiting stakes. It’s very encouraging. With the possibility of one or two more to come it looks very good. We have to finnish 17th to have a successful season and I think we have the squad to achieve that. Even Man Utd seem desperate, they are planning on signing Michael Owen a man who is now two yards slower than he used to be and would be on the subs bench behind SEB any day. As fans we need to be positive and I think we have every reason to be optimistic. Good work MM and JM along with backing from SM. These are good times lets enjoy and get behind the team. Up the Wolves.

Isn’t anyone else worried about our left back position. Yes we have an abundance of them, none of which I feel are Prem standard,
Wardy, great season last year as a fill in left back, and why some fans feel they should criticise him god only knows. The next level up would be to much i feel, on abiliity not effort.
Elokobi, i just don’t see it why do a lot of fans have this hysteria over him – similar to the hysteria with Mo Camara. Matt Hill is just plain championship standard. Dan Jones is for the future if MM sees it that way.

Sam – No offence but we can all predict signings were going to occur once the window opened and that more people will be coming in……….all we had to do to find that out was listen to what Morgan has publically said, no secret there.
Also whats this you were saying about someone behind the scenes coming in with Prem experience the current manager isnt happy about??
We can all talk in crpitic ways to make people think we know more than we do. Its like me saying, I have a contact in the club who states there will be a signing within the next 7 days, and will be a defender………..the likelyhood this will happen is high anyway.

Another good squad player. We do need these for next season, of course but we still need 2 or 3 proven premiership quality players to come into the 1st IX.
Milijas and Doyle fit this description (chuffed he’s got his work permit, but IMV we need 1 or 2 quality central defenders (poss 1 now and 1 in Jan?) and a central midfielder.
Not bothered about up front, we’ve got that sorted! Seriously, we have the goals it this team to comfortably keep us up, what we now need is to make sure we don’t concede stupid goals that could send us down.

Lee Nayloy was the player who most benefitted from our previous prem campaign, you could see him improving every week! Yes, he had a few bad games before then (who doesn’t – even Bully got booed once!!!) but he left us as a very good quality player and I for one would welcome him back!

Great signings so far but I would still like to see one or two more (preferably Premiership) experienced players added to the fold.
I’m also slightly concerned by the way every new signing is announced as playing in a number of positions. While I realise it is useful to have utility players, it isn’t beneficial to have a squad full of them. The old phrase “Jack of all trades, master of none” rapidly springs to mind.

no 58. Lee Naylor is not as good as Hill, Elokobi or even Ward. Scotland is equivalent to league 1. He may have had the very odd champions league game but seeing him struggle in the championship every week was enough for me. Richard Dunne and Nolan would add that bite that we so desperately need. Mancienne would be a welcome addition for cover across the back and I can see that happening. Aaron Ramsay and Macheda on loan would finish off our summer just lovely.

I fail to believe anyone complaining about richard dunne! if you look before last season, he was citys player of the season year after year. ok he wasnt immense last year, but who else at city performed to a level which they possibly could (other than ireland). eg petrov, elano, benjani, richards the list goes on. i think behind the scenes problems with a club in transition damaged players morale last year at city, and i think dunne may have had an average year. look at his history and he is a quality player, and a great signing…if we get him. Anyone mentioning duff…he is as his name suggests im afraid. he on the other hand hasnt performed for years. same with alan smith, same with kevin nolan

Lee Naylor – was great when we were last in the prem???? The same Lee Naylor who gave the ball to the fullback at Bolton, with 5 mins to go when we were leading 1 nil, who then promtly threw it over his head to the winger he should have been marking, who then gave it to Davies for a tap in that cost us 2 points, yeah he was great!!!! Get it right he was an embarrasment I’ve never seen a player targeted as much before or since, take off the rose tinted spectecles, please!!!!
Then some of you have been whinging that we have paid over the top fo Doyle, how you work that out I don’t know, but then the very same people are whinging that we haven’t signed any prem experience, this is what doyle & Hanneman have.
It seems to me that whatever the club do they can’t win, come guys & gals it’s been a great week for the club with QUALITY signings joining us, give people the credit they deserve.

A good squad player that gives us the chance to change shape/style when needed.
What I would love to see now is a little Premiership “know how” Hamann would be superb (and free), Campbell (free but very expensive wage wise but would knock the back line into shape), Nolan (Not that expensive but high wages), McCann (A player that has been around for ages but would tackle a barn door if needed)
Just a few ideas but all worthy IMO
Come on you WOLVES!

FFS, 1st it was when are we going to sign somebody, now we have have everybody is moaning.
I think our signings are just what we needed, young have played alot of football and are quality that would fit in any prem team.
I seem to remember the comments on Owen that he has past it! so why has Ferguson signed him?
We are never going to sign a KAKA or of the likes, and i hope we never to be honest, the 3 m’s have done better than most teams in the prem in their recruitment.
ROLL ON PERTH, I CANT WAIT!

According to this morning’s local Marseille newspaper “La Provence”, Zubar travelled to Wolverhampton last night and today will have a medical with a transfer fee of 3M Euros being agreed between the two clubs…
Central Defender with a lot of talent who lost the “supporters” (and his) confidence after missing the decisive penalty in French Cup final Shootout. If he gets his head together great signing – but will he get the time to fix his mindset in the Premiership – could go both ways!

I think the signings to date have been fantastic. I feel we are still a couple of players short of a real top squad, but its looking good.
Just hope we thin the squad down and recoupe some funds. There are still a number of players in our squad that simply are not good enough to feature, and I hope Mick isn’t simply trying to be too nice to the likes of Collins and Hill.
Can’t wait for the season to start now! C’mon you Wolves!

Richard Dunne – vast prem experience, international experience, consistent, strong, leadership abailtites. I’d take him any day.
Still be nice to get LEDLEY – but it would take at least Doyle’s value to secure his services. Does Jez have it in him to sanction a second major outlay??

JUST WAITING FOR THE 1 STAR SIGNING WE REALLY NEED – HOPEFULLY ITS MANCIENNE – EVEN IF IT IS JUST A SEASON LONG LOAN – I HONESTLY THINK HE’L MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE – DOUBT WE CAN GET HIM THOUGH.

Regarding Lee Naylor.
He was and is always one of my fave players. I absolutely loved seeing him play in the Champions League for Celtic.
However, his limits as a players was also there for all to be seen.
He gave his all, but all too often he was completely out of position. I remember at Camp Nou against Barca. 3 of the 4 players in the back 4 moved forward to use the offside trap. But for some reason, Naylor had stayed back…..
He is and will always be a fave because of his commitment and his left-foot that once in a while created glimpses of potential, but he would not be what we need in PL.
