No ‘big time Charlies’ for Surman
Thursday 2nd July 2009, 11:36AM BST.
New signing Andrew Surman has revealed Wolves have banned signing ‘big time Charlies’ to continue their upward march.
The 22-year-old midfielder has completed his £1.2million move from Southampton on a three-year contract, becoming the latest of a long line of early-20s recruits from the lower leagues.
The pleasantly-grounded new father believes the strict code of ethics from the ‘Three Ms’ – chairman Steve Morgan, chief executive Jez Moxey and boss Mick McCarthy – means big-hitters aren’t welcome at Molineux.
Surman said: “I think having a child and the responsibility that brings probably has helped me. Speaking to Jez and the manager, they have a high sense of ethics at this club.
“They don’t want big-time players coming in here and ruining the team spirit.
“There’s a great team spirit here and that’s probably because it’s a very down to earth bunch of players who are honest.”
The former England under-21 international believes Wolves have shattered Alan Hansen’s old adage that ‘you can’t win anything with kids’.
He said; “I think a lot of people say you can’t win anything with young players, but you look at Wolves winning the league and the average age of the team is very young, so they probably proved a lot of people wrong.
“We’ve got good young players here and they proved their worth last season getting promoted from the Championship.
“It’s a great team to come into when there’s such a young, fresh look to it.”
