Defensive partner expects Gerrard exit

Thursday 2nd July 2009, 10:20AM BST.

manny-smith1Walsall defender Manny Smith admits he doesn’t feel that his partner at the back Anthony Gerrard will stay at the Banks’s Stadium much longer.

The Saddlers have rejected a £200,000 bid from Scunthorpe for Gerrard – sparking an auction for the wantaway star.

Manager Chris Hutchings is now braced for a fight to keep the transfer-listed defender with a host of clubs, including Charlton, primed to firm up their interest.

Smith expects Gerrard to move sooner rather than later, because of his extra class.

The 20-year-old said: “He’s an exceptional player with lots of ability – he’s one of our best players.

“I hope he will stay, but it’s only a matter of time before he moves onto a higher level and better club.

“When you are playing with players like Anthony Gerrard, it’s great to have them alongside you.

“He is always there to help you if you make a mistake.”

And any bets as to how much of the money Hutch will see? Any offers over 10 bob?

THe FA signing forms are at least £2.00 so I will go for a fiver! That means he can sign two and a half players to replace Gerrard!
