Surman swoop secured for Wolves

Wednesday 1st July 2009, 12:35PM BST.

SURMAN 1 GD 01Southampton midfielder Andrew Surman became the second player in two days to sign for Wolves and immediately signalled ‘fan power’ as a key factor.

The 22-year-old has signed a three-year deal plus another year’s option, for a fee worth around £1.2million rising to £2million to ease Southampton’s crippling debts.

Wolves took their spending to £8million in three days and to almost £11million this summer on Nenad Milijas – whose work permit hearing is tomorrow – Marcus Hahnemann and Kevin Doyle.

The former England under-21 international, who follows £6.5million Doyle, took little persuading to come after recalling his role in the landmark 6-0 home defeat against Saints in March 2007.

He said: “Yes I’m afraid I scored in that 6-0 game, but we could have been 3-0 down at half-time.

“The memory that stuck with me was how, after the sixth goal went in, all the Wolves fans were on their feet cheering, backing the players and the manager.

“All the Southampton players at the time commented on how amazing that was. Playing for those sort of fans is a reason why this move is so good.”

Surman believes coming to Molineux is the ‘big move’ he was looking for.

He said: “To come to a Premier League club and one as big as Wolves is fantastic.

“Even in the Championship, Wolves is a huge club which you can tell even just from the stadium and the fanbase.

“The facilities are there and ready for the Premier League. With Wolves now there I certainly wasn’t going to turn down this opportunity.

“Any player strives to play at the highest level and you don’t get any higher than the Premier League.

“This is a fantastic chance for me to prove myself in the Premier League and try to help Wolves do well.”

Surman admits signing for a squad of similar age was also a key factor.

He added: “Even though it looks a young side here it’s also a very experienced side, when you consider how many games they’ve played.

“I already know Michael Kightly and Richard Steaman from England, while Darren Potter was on loan at Southampton.

“It’s always nice to see a few friendly faces.”

As for the Wolves ‘fans’ moaning about signing lower league players and how you will end up in the Championship if signing Championship players may I remind you of Kightly (Confrence) Ward (Irish league) Elokobi (?league1/league2) Keogh (League 1) and the Wolves are in the Prem…… Take a step into Walsall Fancs shoes who have been rejected by a 33 year old left back I had hardly heard of!!!

A couple of players, preferably one who has been there and done it in the Premier League, and I think we could not only stay up, but surprsie a lot of people in doing it!

Even before the last couple of signings the atmosphere was totally different to last time we went up. We’ve now got a hungry, young squad, that despite the negativity that some are still insisting on spouting, are the best bunch we’ve had for a good number of years.

Roll on West Ham on August 15!

PS – Interesting to see Fabio has told his scout s to watch SEB in the PL. I’ve said for months we’d have a player in the World Cup squad next year. What price him scoring the winner in the final???

number 6 Rudolf. May I suggest a bit of food for thought.

Everton, Jagielka, Lescott, Hibbert, Bates, Andy johnson were all signed from lower leagues and they have been succesful.

    That is just one club.

Not many clubs are picking the talent from the lower leagues, so for me, this is an open rich market place.

Just a different way of thinking.

Bare in mind we bought a none league player in Kites and a 2nd divison left winger in Jarvis. Would you send them back??

Another good signing. The club is cayying out some astute business, as some of thee young players will go up in value, so if we do go down, which I neither expect or hope us to, these players will be assets rather than liabilities.

28 Ronjon. It is an opinion echoed by many, to complain about signing talent from lower leagues is ludicrous I and others have already pointed only a small fraction of players who have come from the lower echolons of football and have proved to be fantastic players. You need only look at our squad as some have pointed out let alone the hundreds of others of the years. There are many diamonds in the rough. Does it matter where they come from? Or does it only matter that they are good players who will get better and are now Prem players!! Capiche my friend!!!?

Not sure on this one !!!

He is a good young player, and we have paid a good price for him, but …. Is he better than Jarvis, Ward etc. Where is he going to play, left mid or left back ??

This is a decent signing but does not improve the 1st 11 in my opinion.

I just wish we were only signing players that were improving the starting 11 at this point. I think most Wolves fans would accept 6 or 7 of our first team are really going to struggle in the PREM. So where are they players coming from to address this ???

Hahnemann – Is he better than Hen ?
The Serb – I assume is better than Jones, Edwards and Henry (If we get the WP)
Doyle – Is he better than Blake ?
Surman – Is he better than Jarvo ?

I don’t think any of these guys are bad signings, I just think we are not really improving the team too much at the moment. I really hope we sign some players that will def improve the 1st 11.

Whether Doyle is better than SEB is an interesting debate, but it’s not material to your argument. Doyle will become SEB’s partner (replacing Keogh or Iwelumo – take your pick) and so improve the starting 11.
Milijas will improve the midfield, hopefully.
Surman will add strength in depth out wide. After all, we’re not actually expecting Jarvo and Kites to stay fit all season are we ?
Hahnemann looks like a mature insurance policy if Hennessey loses confidence.

He’s not going to be an automatic starter but offers good options from the bench as he can play centre midfield, left wing and left back. He’s got a good passing range can score from outside the box and isn’t scared to put his foot in, and with only being a young lad he’s only going to get better! all in all very happy with this one now for 2 centre halves another striker and quality holding midfielder and we’re ready!

wolffnn2 – Hahnemann was brought for competition with Hennessey and Doyle has premier league experience aswell. It’s not whether he’s better than SEB, but he’s better than Iwelumo. They’l form a great partnership. I think Surman is a good signing but wouldn’t rush him straight in. What we need now is to buy a centre back (Ronald Zubar), and another centre midfielder (Kevin Nolan or Steve Sidwell etc). And then we can loan in another defender such as Bale or Mancienne and then another striker. That should see us through to January, where we can improve the squad.

If we sign Nolan I really will be in the mood for dancing.

He needs to be at a club with a good work ethic, like Bolton and Big Sam offered. Wolves fit the bill perfectly and he would soon get back to how he was. At 26, he is bang at his peak now. Mick, I’m sure, would get the most out of him like Big Sam did.

An excellent signing. He’ll only improve with every game he plays. I too would like one ortwo experienced prem players now, but I’m not spitting the dummy over it like Rudolph. I’d love a couple of defenders now with a couple of years of prem football. I’ve no idea who but as long as they’ve had 2 seasons or more in established teams, I don’t mind. I totally agree with Wilmslow Wolf. Buying lower league players is very astute business. Long may it continue, unless you want us to end up like Leeds, Leicester and Southampton themselves. Did we not learn from our early 80′s disaster. Financial prudence is a must to survive at any level.

If we signed Casillas, Puyol, Vidic, Iniesta, Tevez, Benzema, Eto and Ribery tomorrow some people STILL wouldnt be happy.

I am by no doubts a MM happy clapper
(cant stand the bloke personally) but i am a Wolvesfan above all else – MM and Jez have done some shrewd business thus far with Doyle, Hahnaman, Surman, Milijas (permit permitting).

The likes of Surman, Friend and Vokes may not be major players for the WHOLE of next season – but for seasons to come they definitely are.

There will be more signings on the horizon especially after July 1st –
and if the rumours still surrounding the likes of Nolan, Mancienne, Driver and Warnock make up some of those i will personally be more than happy (as i am sure many other realistic wolves fans will be).

Look at the makings of a really good team all you doubters :

2 really promising young keepers plus 1 older/performing head with Prem experience.

The possibility of mancienne, elokobi, stearman and foley (plus possible others)

A midfield with not just 1, but 3 great wingers and a potentially exciting baltic centre mid added to the passing and/or workrate of Jones & Eddy (who i think will be a Premiership star)

Doyle and SEB (Capellos new spot) up front with other potentials in reserve (vokes and big man chris ) – and dont forget mr keogh he is progressing every match (and as i have said before if mr trappatoni rates him THEN who am I or YOU to argue ????? (and he was instruental in helping us across the line last season)

All you doubters …. Please be patient

    (1) Jez may penny pinch a bit …. but it is in the interest of the club (see Leeds and Southampton) … meet the guy …. chat he is no mug !!!!!!

    (2) Consider the signings at this point COMPARED TO last time we were promoted to the premiership …. no comparisson !

    (3) The mention of premiership experience …. is ths really so drastic i.e. Reading, Stoke,Hull … lets wait and see …. but Doyle and Hahnemann have experience … add to that 2 more thats two thirds of a team.

Maybe Wolves are no longer the sleeping giant-
We have been comatosed for decades -
But the 3Ms may be the dose of sats we need.

    If just 3 :
Mancienne, Nolan and Doyle would do me .

What excellent recruitment by the 3M’s. When you consider the Andrew Surman transfer & how we have eased the financial situation at his boyhood club. A similar situation happened many eons ago in reverse when we had to sell Tim Flowers to the Saints because of our dire financial situation. The tides have certainly turned on this one & I sincerely hope their prodigal son Matt LeTissier can bring the the club forward/

This year looks to be one of the weakest Premiership Leagues ive ever seen. Burnley, Birmingham, Wolves, Hull, Stoke, Wigan, West Ham, Portsmouth, Blackburn, Bolton are all in danger of being sucked into a relegation fight, thats half the league. On our day Wolves can compete against any of that lot. Players like Surman can only add depth to our squad, we all know defence is where the problem will lie at them moment.

Michael Ball and Dietar Hamann have been released by Man City surely they are worth a 1 year deal? Lots of rumours regarding Nolan, Dunne and Michael Owen going round. Ball is probably worth a two year given his age and would be best left back at the club, masses of experience and still the right side of 30. Would love to see Nolan, Dunne, Ledley, Mills, Mancienne, Leko, plus two good loan deals and a couple of free transfers, Ball, Hamann and Lauren. That would give us a very competitive first 11 and good depth too.

Laughing wolf, if we do sell Keogh i’d want more than 1.5 mil plus a sell on clause, I wouldn’t want to see him go as I think he’s pace and work ethic would be an asset in the Prem, but i can only think if he is sold there must be another quality striker in the offing for us. Hope we don’t loan Vokes as I think he could surprise a few coming off the bench this season.

Hi Guys, what has impressed me about Wolves is that you have gone out early to buy new players whilst other Clubs and their Managers are still on holiday. You need to get a combination of youth with potential along with experienced Premier players. We were excited last season when we bought all our new players but for one reason or another some of those didn’t click. Hopefully you can add further players with Premier experience and have a good season, if stoke and Hull can do it then you stand an equally good chnace of staying in the Premier. Skill will not keep you there alone, luck plays a part and the most important thing is getting wins at home against the bottom 10 teams and points when playing them away. Just finish above Stoke
