Di Matteo confirmed as Albion boss

Wednesday 1st July 2009, 10:29AM BST.

wd3352154roberto-di-matteoAlbion have confirmed former Italy international Roberto Di Matteo as the man to pick up where former manager Tony Mowbray left off.

Di Matteo agreed to become the club’s new head coach on a 12-month rolling contract and has met with the Baggies players as they report back for pre-season training.

The Italian’s title represents a significant departure from the customary ‘manager’ title usually offered the man put in charge of first team affairs.

Details of how the 39-year-old ex-Chelsea star will conduct his duties have yet to be clarified by Albion, but it is thought that while he will be in charge of all first team affairs.

Player recruitment will be decided by a much broader consensus at Albion, in which sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth will play an increasingly important role.

Di Matteo’s long-time aide and fellow ex-Chelsea man Eddie Newton will be his assistant and Ade Mafe his fitness coach, while Albion have also confirmed that the highly-regarded Michael Appleton is staying on to work as first team coach.

Chairman Jeremy Peace said: “I am delighted with Roberto’s appointment, which concludes an intensive selection process during which over 40 names were considered.

“We shortlisted two outstanding candidates and spoke to both of them after receiving permission from their clubs.

“Ultimately Roberto was the unanimous choice.”

Di Matteo’s first meeting with the players will be followed by his introduction to the media, before he gets down to the serious business of preparing for Albion’s pre-season tour to Slovenia and Croatia.

As they used to say “I’m over the moon Brian”. To all the doubters who have expressed their desire for a “big name”, give the man a chance. We have’nt kicked a ball in anger yet there are so called supporters writing him off. See where we are at the end of the season. Onwards and upwards.

Pleased for Appleton, happy that we have a footballing winner in place in Di Matteo. Lots of frustration from a career cut short by injury – he still has a lot of passion for the game he loves left. Let’s get behind him and the team.

I’m surprised that Peace has gone down the technical director route, its been met with a lot of opposition everywhere else and percentage wise hasnt worked.
However Di Matteo has the say on team affairs, he may not have a CV that reads winner winner winner as a manager, but his experience on the field of play, should be motivation enough to get him through.

My old memory is playing up this morning. Does this mean the fitness coach we had from Blues is no more? Delighted Appleton is kept on. He will be ‘yer man’ in the future and you never know, he may stay for years. We should breed our own managers/coaches like we are doing the players. It’s the way forward for stability because football is SO volatile.

I guess it means the guy from the Blues has gone – not the best CV – 2 seasons, 2 relegations.

I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a new season EVER. How long ’til I wake up?

Football is about excitement and disappointment. We had the disappointment last season with relegation, but now comes the excitement and this is an exciting appointment. Congratulations to JP on being bold and not going down the Curbishley type of manager route. I wanted a young hungry manager and Di Matteo will do for me. Good luck to him

Read Martin Swain’s article on Jeremy Peace’s appointment of DiMatteo. It’s quite superb but there’s no place to comment and frankly, it needs one. Lovely article Martin, tells it as it is, no froth, no half-truths. Heartiest Congratulations!

initial reaction cheap option shoestring manager.however we need an impact manager he did that at mk dons and his football pedigree will surely command instant respect from the players may be even some of the disgruntled ones.here’s to bella bella football at the Hawthorns all the best ROBERTO

This was my 1st choice also. Big fan as a player and he did a reasonable job last year at MK. I know he has not got pedigree at this level as a manager but he knows the game well. JP has edge the bet by giving a rolling contract. My only concern is if he does well then will he be picked up like ToMo necxt summer or will he stay. I presume that my application was one of the other 40 who finished in 3rd place. still mustn’t grumble

Welcome to our club RDM. I am sure the majority of fans will make you welcome and give you a chance but there will undoubtedly be the ones who will be against you from the off. Here’s hoping for a great season and some good football. Boing Boing.

After the initial shock quite pleased to see
Roberto as boss. i live close to preston (burnley to be exact imagine my summer with wolves b’ham and Burnley going up nighhtmare)and when you listen to Irvine on local telly very dour an uninspiring we would have lost our best players. Would still heve prefered
Ferguson but this will be exciting times
One more thing JP usually so tight with money trying to buy a league one player for 2 million with no manager appointed very strange.

Great footballer, lots of experience. If he’s good he’s gone (like all the others) if he’s not so good he’s gone (like all the rest). The appointment demonstrates where the owner sees The Boggies. If you order the masks now you’ll get plenty of wear out of them before he’s off.

16 – not sure in what way your comments are made – every manager is employed on the terms you describe…. Alex Ferguson was nearly sacked due to lack of achievement, Scalari went, Strachan went, Real Madrid change managers every year ect ect….. so your comments seem odd.

I hope that when RDM leaves its because he’s been poached by Italy to manage the national side after leading albion to amazing european success.

I like his (RDM’s) thoughts on hard work – it sounds like he’s coming in with a plan and will work his socks off to get success !

Porbably not thinking about it, as you’re more than likely a Dingle posing as a football fan as you lot tend to do so very often on here.

Not strictly true “never get sacked” is it.

Spot on 19 and 20. I’ll bet they were all fully paid up before they went too. JP appears to be totally honest in his dealings. Long may it remain so. It takes a lifetime to build a good reputation, just one bad deed to lose it.
