The Renault Megane Sports Tourer

Renault’s Megane Sport Tourer has enough space to match its radical looks.

The French firm launched the Megane range including the Sport Tourer estate model in 2002.

Generous levels of standard and optional kit were offered, plus a good choice of petrol and diesel engines.

The car received a mild refresh part way through its life.

Engines

The ever generous Renault doesn’t skimp on engine choice. There’s a good selection of petrol and diesel units, with the former great for urban use and the latter ideal for long journeys or for racking up the miles during the course of a year.

Exterior

The estate bodystyle has toned down the Megane’s radical looks. That said, its chiselled nose is hard to mistake for anything else. At the rear, the car’s tailgate opens wide to reveal and spacious and practical load bay.

Interior

While not the most luxurious-looking cabins, the Megane’s interior is practical and durable.

For an active family that’s a pretty good trade-off. It’s also a spacious interior, especially when you fold the rear seats down.

Driving

Less engaging than, say, Ford’s Focus, the Megane is noticeably tuned more for comfort. The car’s supple ride and good noise insulation are welcome on long journeys.

The engines play their part, with the diesels proving especially talented – good fuel economy, low noise.

Ownership

A practical and versatile car, the Megane Sport Tourer might not be a people carrier but it would make a good family car.

The robust interior and spacious boot help, while modest running costs should please those on a budget. It’s hardly a big car either, making it easy to park in town.

What to look for

Any family-orientated car needs to be inspected closely. Damage to the trim and upholstery could be difficult or costly to fix.

Parking dents can be another issue, while excessively kerbed wheels could be hiding more serious damage.

And don’t forget the test drive and to inspect the car’s paperwork.
