Torrential rain wrecks homes
Tuesday 30th June 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Residents armed with buckets and brooms took to the streets to try and clear gushing flood waters from their doorways.
Torrential rain once again flooded Severn Drive in Perton, South Staffordshire, last night, leaving the street submerged and wheelie bins surrounded by water.
Water covered the street for the second time in three days, with residents revealing they “dread the daily weather forecast”.
Last night’s rainstorm saw drains overflow and people dressed in waterproof coats and wellies try and battle against the water.
Homeowners on the street say the downpours have caused thousands of pounds of damage to their properties, ruining their lawns and carpets.
Husband and wife Sara and David Smith, aged 37 and 40, said they have been flooded eight times in 10 years.
“It’s a total nightmare,” said Mrs Smith. “We are living in constant fear of the weather forecast because we are scared of being flooded.”
She added she had now brought in emergency sandbags to try and protect her home.
Two families on the street have been forced to rip up their carpets due to the flash floods.
