Varteks game added to Albion tour
Monday 29th June 2009, 9:30AM BST.
Albion will round off their pre-season trip to Slovenia by crossing the border into Croatia to take on Varteks on July 18.
The Baggies will travel around an hour from their training base in Slovenia’s North-Eastern city of Ptuj to face the Croatian First Division side, at their 9,000-capacity stadium in Varazdin.
It will be a return to the scene of a punishing event in West Midlands football, as Varteks’ finest moment came when they knocked Aston Villa out of the UEFA Cup in 2001.
The Baggies other tour match comes three days earlier against Slovenian First Division outfit Nafta, at the Mestni Stadium in Lendava.
Varteks promise to carry the tougher challenge. They beat runners-up Hajduk Split 1-0 away towards the end of last season and ultimately finished 10th in the league.
Former Croatia Under-21 midfielder Goran Mujanovic finished as joint-eighth top goalscorer in the division with 11 goals.
They will also be further along in their fitness cycle than Albion, as the friendly comes just a week before their new season.
The match is set for a 7pm (BST) kick-off.
