One post lures 400 hopefuls

More than 400 people have applied for just one job at Walsall’s New Art Gallery.

The post of exhibitions assistant at the venue in Gallery Square attracted a wave of interested jobseekers from all over the country.

Stephen Snoddy, director at The New Art Gallery confirmed it had received 402 applications and said it was a record.

“The exhibitions assistant at The New Art Gallery, Walsall is a great, very interesting first job for somebody wanting to work in the visual arts,” he said.

“The national reputation of the gallery meant we got applicants from all over England. This job is the first step on the ladder.”

Other recent jobs at Walsall Council which have attracted large numbers has been the employees services assistant which got 96 applicants and 40 applicants to become a cleaner.

    just goes to show how hard it is to get jobs these days. So dont blame for having having no job because im 18 and i have been looking for 6 months but have found nothing.

    This is just a joke – American students would be doing this kind of thing to earn chump change. You haven’t got a chance here. What next: join the seemingly never-ending lines of people crying for more porridge, all shouting “Sir, can I have some more?”..or the other line for medical experimentation? Haven’t we come far, eh..

    ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT I AM GLAD I TOOK EARLY RETIRMENT AND LEFT BRITAIN TO LIVE IN TURKEY BECAUSE I COULD NOT LIVE IN ENGLAND ON MY PENSION HOW THE OAPs MANAGE I JUST DON’T KNOW NOW THERES NO WORK

    I have been applying for jobs non-stop for nearly 7 months without success. It has got to the point where I am having to lend money simply to feed my children. I am at my wits end and thinking of turning to crime to make ends meet.
