Edwards set for new three-year deal
Monday 29th June 2009, 10:45AM BST.
Wolves midfielder David Edwards has become the latest of the promotion winners to pledge his future to the club after agreeing a new three-year deal.
The 23-year-old will put pen to paper on his new terms as the players return for the start of pre-season training.
Having come a long way as a player since signing in January 2008, Edwards is delighted to have the chance to keep on progressing.
He said: “It’s something that had been ongoing over the summer, but with holidays and international duty it’s just taken time to get sorted.
“To know I’m going to be here for another three years and the manager wants me here is something I am very proud of, particularly having come from a lower league club.”
Former Shrewsbury star Edwards signed a two-and-a-half year deal when he joined the club for £650,000 from Luton.
He joins Karl Henry, Kevin Foley and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in signing long-term deals this summer.
Hard-running Edwards appeared in more League games on 44 than any other Wolves player apart from Henry and Foley in the Championship-winning campaign last season, although he only started 23 of them.
Edwards – who ended the season playing wide right – returns from his holidays with more competition for his place, following the arrival of Serbian international captain Nenad Milijas.
His box-to-box athleticism and versatility is seen as key to Wolves’ chances of survival back in the Premier League.
But his path could become even harder next season, with the club having been linked with another central midfielder.
Reports suggest the club have contacted Monaco about £1.5million-rated Croatian international Jerko Leko.
The 29-year-old is transfer-listed and has a year left on his contract in France.

Good news. His work rate is phenomenal, knocks it around, very offensive, offer cover for right back also and he gets into many goal scoring positions.
Good player, improving and will step up I’m sure.
agree George. Will be interesting to see how he adapts to prem but definitely one to lock down for the next several years. Well done David – you enjoy it for your efforts so far.
ok, whatever, but please can we start signing some premier class players. they are back in training this week & there’s just one 37 year old free transfer.
Thats the 8th signing of the summer(Henry, Foley, Ebanks-Blake, Craddock, Foley, Hahnemann, Miljas)
Sure we must be ready for the Premiership then;)
Just kidding, but surely he deserves a new contract. Well done lad!
Edwards will play in the Prem no probs, you only have to see how well he played a while back for Luton against Liverpool.
Got pace and creativity, happy to have him signed up on a deal he deserves!
That’s good news but when are we going to sign our essential ‘shirt-seller’ from the Asian continent?
Ronald Zubar due to arrive @ cropton today for a medical according to the French sports paper L’equipe…. + that Leko would be a really good signing !!!
For all his athleticism he is not a very good passer, which may be why he has been pushed out to the right hand side positions. Still, good cover and has always been able to get into a game quickly from the bench. I hope he will continue to develop from any experienced midfielder we bring in.
With the start of the pre-season, hope to see the team get into the training for the new challenges in the Premier league.
With players with new contract and further commitment from the rest,it will indeed provide a steady platform to build up from here and now.
Hope to see a few more signing to strengthen the team for new season.
Forward the Wolves!!!

better get my contribution in before wolvesmod,tom,777,bobwolf ,jiwal, and all the other (happy) lot turn up, well deserved rob .
linked with leko from monaco ths morning, premiership happyclapper and proud.
prediction for may 2010 , premier champions chelsea, relegated burnley, birmingham, and fulham , wwfc finish 15th

Good to see another player rewarded for his efforts and improvement but PLEASE can we see some Premiership quality being signed as well!!
12.00 & no negativity from wolvesmod?
Must be a record.
On a more serious note, the boy as deserved his new contract & time will tell if he can hack it in the Prem.Playing against the likes on Rooney & Drogba may just bring out the best of him.
I actually like Dave Edwards and believe he will be a gem in the Prem. This isn’t sarcasm, either.
Whoever said Fulham will go down need to wake up and realise that they finished 7th last season.
Edwards alongwith players like Stearman, Friend and Vokes have plenty of potential but are probably not quite ready.
Saying that he is a regular for Wolves and may well surprise a few.
As I predicted a few weeks ago, due to either the lack of quality on these sures or obscene transfer fees, we might be recruiting a few foreign heads to compliment the many British and Irish class youngsters!
David Edwards is one of those we all hope will improve in the Premiership.
A Serb & Croat in the same team will be interesting.
Im not a moaner and would love it if the players we have now could do well in the prem, i went to 37 games last year and sadly most of them are not ready for it. They need experienced players to bring them on or are we just getting them long term so they get a good price for them if we go down
Report abuse
never mind the transfers did anyone else see the two wolves flags on the main stage at glastonbury
they have been there a few years now
Report abuse
14. I disagree. In my opinion Stearman was my player of the season. I think he is actually better than Berra. We do have plenty of potential for the future and the long term looks very promising. Be great to have this team for the westham game with who we have been linked to:
Hennessey
Foley
Zubar
Mancienne
Elokobi
Kightly
Milijas
Nolan
Jarvis
Ebanks Blake
Kevin Doyle

I am pleased that DE has signed, he is clearly a good player and will get better I am sure.
Not so sure about this Ronald Zuber from the videos I have seen he seems to be an expert at scoring own goals, just what we don’t need in any league never mind the prem. We can’t afford to have a dodgy defence in any way shape or form.
The Serb we are trying to sign still hasn’t got a work permit, so that might go tits up. We still need some quality. Doyle would be a great acquisition. We need a strong tried and tested leader in mid-field. Bring back Mike Bailey. He was a leader….. :-)
18) I was not slagging any of the players off. I too thought Stearman was quality last season but I do not think that MM will gamble with him in the Premiership. Anyway I see that you have not picked him in your side?
As for the comment on Edwards I meant Wales regular!

‘better get my contribution in before wolvesmod,tom,777,bobwolf ,jiwal, and all the other (happy) lot turn up, well deserved rob .’
Who is Rob?? Don’t you mean DAVE Edwards. Er, Rob Edwards was sold to Blackpool last season. Nice to see we have intelligent individuals commenting on here!!
Good to have Edwards signed up, but he was backup in the Championship and does not have the range of passing or general quality needed for the Prem. He is a runner, works hard but nothing more.
Still no sign of any quality signings – nice to know my season ticket money has been well spent. Or did it go on Jez’s bonus??
A Serb & Croat in the same team will be interesting.
We already have Irish, Welsh, English & Scots getting along nicely.
Looks like we’ve missed out on that American defender too. Saw him against Spain n Brazil last night in the Confederations Cup, and he looks outstanding.
We need to stop the penny pinching.
Heard Blues have approached Patrick Vieria. Can’t see Wolves ever doing this, can you?
23. Yes and Patrick Viera is still laughing. If Wolves ring Liverpool and say we want Torres we would get laughed at its not ambition, its stupidity. Blues are signing Lee ‘I was rubbish in the championship last season’ Bowyer not Viera!
23) Approaching a player and having a chance of signing them is completely different. The blues might as well have approached Torres for all the chance they have of getting him.
As for Oneywayo (sp), outstanding? he was at fault for Brazils second goal!
25. Sorry I am lost, what was your point? You seem to just repeat what I said!
Was that positivity from Wolvesmod and Bob Wolf? OK, in response, I’ll admit the extended contract for Collins wasn’t a great move.
Stephen Ward and Karl Henry will be great next year though.
In Mick we trust!
Seen it all now. Laughingwolf asking someone what their point was. Laugh – I nearly choked!

25) Mancienne had a shocker for the England U21′s.
Are you saying we shouldn’t sign him?
Well then.
please don’t give him a new deal sell him PLEASE, HE’S NOT A PREM PLAYER

all we doing is giving averaidge players contrakts, when is he going to get the chek book out thats what i want to know.

and is super sam voakes going to get a chance instead of signing sombody.

4,Copenhagen you may be Kidding but may be not to far from the Mark,Moxey may well start saying 8 new signings so far this close season.Off to Australia on Saturday without any tangible New quality on board. We were told that the mistakes of 2003 would be learnt and that being promoted early in may we would be ahead of the game in new Signings.July 1st on Wednesday,WHERE ARE THEY?.Alex rays Butler Before you come on here accusing me of being anti MM,SM.JM and anything Wolves,Is it to much to ask for a Squad that will compete in the Prem, not being Hammered week in week out.

Need to challenge what Laughingstock said;
I have got mates who are Bluenoses (don’t worry, I wouldn’t give them my last Rolo)and they felt Lee Bowyer was one of their better players during the run in.
Also as David Gold said, if you don’t try you don’t get. I understand Viera turned down England not Birmingham…he wanted to move back to France. Remember he’s a veteran, what if it had come off ? Wouldn’t have liked that !
Back to Dave Edwards. Well deserved after a great Championship season. He may just (just !) prove a few people wrong in the Premiership

seems to me we are planning for life back in the CCC. Just no ambition.

IS IT JUST ME OR ARE 90% OF PEOPLE ON HERE JUST ROUND THE BEND?
DID ANY OF YOU ACTUALLY ATTEND ANY GAMES THE 2ND HALF OF LAST SEASON??
WE ARE A VERY VERY MEDIOCRE SIDE AND WERE LUCKY TO WIN ALOT OF THE GAMES TOWARDS THE END!
ANYONE WITH ANY FOOTBALLING KNOWLEDGE & SEEING OUR TEAM HOME AND AWAY LIVE AND NOT READING PAPERS AND WATCHING THE CHAMPIONSHIP MUST AGREE! INFACT MOST OF THE REGULARS AT GAMES DO SPEAK SENSE!
IT WAS GREAT TO GET PROMOTED, ONE OF THE GREATEST FEELINGS EVER BUT WE ALL QUIETLY KNEW THAT THERE HAD TO BE QUITE A BIG TEAM OVERHAUL IF WE WERE REALLY GOING TO EVEN DREAM OF STAYING UP!
YET WE ARE GETTING LINKED WITH PLAYERS LIKE
SURMAN
LITA
TOMMY SMITH
ALL IN MY OPINION JUST ADDING TO MEDIOCRE-NESS (TOP CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYERS AT BEST)!
ALSO TO HANG ON TO THESE PLAYERS IN MY BOOK IS NOTHING SHORT OF CRIMINAL:
COLLINS (WOULD GET SLAUGHTERED BY MOST PREM PLAYERS)
S. WARD (A HALF DECENT LEFT BACK AT TIMES BUT NOWHERE CLOSE TO PREM QUALITY)
G. FRIEND (I KNOW HE IS GOING OUT ON LOAN BUT NO PACE, NO VISION, NOTHING! GET RID)
MATT HILL (IN MY OPINION IS A AVERAGE CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER)
AND I COULD GO ON……..
I AS A SUPPORTER AM UNDER NO ILLUSION HOW DIFFICULT THIS IS GOING TO BE BUT COME ON JM MM CM WE HAVE TO BUY SOME REAL QUALITY HAVING 3 PLAYERS WITH PREM EXPERIENCE JUST WONT WASH IT! ESPECIALLY WHEN WE SAW FIRST HAND THAT CRADDOCK CAN’T COPE!
CHEAP IMPORTS FROM ABROAD WILL NOT CUT IT! DIDNT WE FIND THAT OUT IN 2003??
DOYLE IS A DECENT ADDITION AND IS THE TYPE OF PLAYER, PRICE ETC WE SHOULD BE AIMING AT!
HOWEVER, HE WON’T COME! NOT WITH FULHAM OFFERING EUROPA NEXT YR.
I HOPE WE PULL OUR SOCKS UP AND GIVE IT A RIGHT GO IN TRANSFER MARKET BUT AT THE MOMENT I AM A VERY VERY CONCERNED FAN!
WOLVES FOREVER!!!
All well and good, he is part of the future of the club but when will the new arrivals come? For God’s sake not Tommy Smith – he would befit a club in the lower reaches of the Championship not the Premier League – not only is he not young but he would simply not cut the mustard at a higher level. Mancienne of course but permanently and if only on loan go after someone else, like Zubar, Mills or both. Regarding SEB’s partner – either Doyle, McCormack or Frazer Campbell would do nicely.
P.S anyone heard of this cheap Croatian midfielder we are supposedly after?
Well done lads to see the Wolf flying proudly at Glastonbury. As for transfers this week or next is make or break I think. I can’t see how Mancienne can be match fit when he has been warming the bench for months but should offer us a bit of class if we can land him. Otherwise we need a £5 million defender to play with Stearman. Fingers crossed!
From some reports today its looks as if we’ve captured Surman and Leko. Also rumour has it Doyle has agreed to join us too. Fingers crossed for some confirmation by Friday!

Hi people I saw this article from Goal.com
COULD THIS MEAN THE RETURN OF MANCIENNE TO WOLVES?! …I really hope so :D Saw Mick was on his phone today at the training ground, hopefully talking transfers. Mancienne worth 5mi
Chelsea could be prepared to put their young defender Michael Mancienne in the shop window.
The 21-year-old spent the first half of last season on loan
at Wolverhampton Wanderers before returning to Stamford Bridge, but it appears that he does not appear in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for next season.
According to ClubCall.com, Mancienne is about to be placed on the transfer list, triggering an auction for his signature.
At the head of the queue are Wolves, who were impressed during Mancienne’s stint at the club and believe that he could help their bid for Premier League survival.
However, they will face stiff competition from Reading, whose manager, Brendan Rodgers, used to coach the Chelsea reserves, giving him a distinct advantage at the negotiating table.
Mancienne is currently on international duty with the England U-21 team, where he has had a horror tournament despite his team’s success. After being sent off in the opening match against Finland, his only other appearance came against Germany, where his mistake inside three minutes cost England a goal.
Arjun Miglani, Goal.com
Can’t see Reading gazumping personally, we must move quick if they really do transfer list the lad.

Hopefully this will be the first of at least 4 more quality signings which will prove to people that we are going about business in the right way…in private!!! To many people seem to play Football manager, it ain’t real guys get a grip. If we can see what we need to do I think it is fair to say so do the M’s thats why they are running a real professional premier division club!
cant believe it 6mil for a bloke who only scored 9 goals in a team that finished 2nd in the championship.

i just think its to much money for a championship player, why have the others pulled out.

Congratulations to Dave Edwards
Well deserved and hopefully one of our younger players who can make an impact in the Prem. He has drive and energy and appears late in the box to finish moves off.
If the Doyle reports are true, this is a massive piece of news, not just because he has Prem experience and is a proven goalscorer there, but because we have beaten off strong challenges from established Prem clubs.
I must admit, deep down, I thought that we had lost out, as it seemed to be taking too long, but it just goes to show, have a little faith in the 3 M’s and a little patience.
Glad I’m not one of those that have been getting hysterical about lack of signings !!
Egg ….. Face…. ????

If people think between 5-6 Mil is to much then I’m sorry you have no idea, very easy to look at last seasons haul but Injuries and a loss of form…which happens to the best, were to blame. We couldn’t handle him (to be fair defensively we weren’t great throughout the season) I play football with a 1st team coach at Reading, I won’t give his name as it wouldn’t be fair. But he told me about this possible deal sometime ago and rates him very highly and says he will only get better, easily the work rate of Keogh but much more quality. (will Hunt follow?) Could still do with another forward possibly a loan deal. This Gai from Shaktar would be a real coup, as would the Croat centre midfielder, although I would like a proven Prem centre mid in there. Also Mancienne, this Zubar, why not look at Lucas Neil he’s free so we could afford the wages, the Lad Mills from Donnie is a great prospect too. Still feel we also need a top level left back. Pheeew!!!
Spot on Winslow. Would really like Hunt coming in too.
COME ON YOU WOLVES !!!

Whilst I am pleased that Doyle has been signed – I look at where he would have fit in say Villa’s squad or any other “linked club” that we were supposedly competing against for his signature
It does concern me that we are being linked with Surman Tommy Smith etc as I dont see how much better they are to what we have already?
I hope that Doyle hits the ground running and the prospect of him and SEB sounds good on paper – I just hope that we bring in major improvements elsewhere otherwise we will spend most games fighting a rear guard action with Doyle and SEB redundant
As and when the other “additions” appear we shall have to wait and see BUT the likes of Mills fr Doncaster Surman from Saints and Miller from Watford at best “project players”
Imv too much of a gamble as to Premiership football – Miller although 29yrs didnt pull up any trees last time in the Prem
As for Milijas with a criminal record – will he be granted a work permit – officially no he shouldnt get one but hey money talks!
Finally one signing with no complications hoo ray now we cant sit on our laurels feeling good about ourselves – Who’s next???
