Raider in threats to hurt staff with knife
Saturday 27th June 2009, 10:42AM BST.
A knife-wielding robber fled with cash from a Black Country supermarket. The thug confronted a staff member at Nisa in Caldmore Green, Walsall, yesterday.
The female worker was shocked but not injured in the raid just before 12.30pm.
Police from Walsall are now investigating the robbery at the shop which was open as normal again during the afternoon.
Staff at the supermarket refused to comment but confirmed the worker did not require hospital treatment.
Viyja Kainth, vice-chairman of the Palfrey and Caldmore Neighbourhood Watch, said: “These attacks are getting more and more often and the public are worried about them.”
West Midlands Police spokeswoman Zoe Lee said: “A lone male offender wearing black clothing and with his face covered went into the supermarket and approached the female shopkeeper with a knife and demanded money.”
She added the man was of mixed race, aged 19 to 20, and left the shop via the rear exit with a quantity of cash.
One nearby trader, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s very worrying when something like this happens.
“It shows they don’t care who they pull a knife on, even if it’s a woman.
“I just hope the police catch whoever has done this, because these people need locking up forever.”
Police inquiries are continuing and anyone with information is asked to call Walsall Police Station on 0845 113 5000.
