Guzan targets Villa No 1 position

Brad GuzanBrad Guzan is targeting Confederations Cup glory with the USA tomorrow – before switching his attention to becoming Villa’s number one, writes Brendan McLoughlin.

Guzan, 24, is part of the USA squad hoping to complete their fairytale run by beating Brazil in tomorrow’s final in Johannesburg.

Having impressed in the 3-0 win over Egypt which secured their unlikely progression, Guzan found himself back on the bench behind Everton’s Tim Howard for Wednesday’s shock semi-final success over European champions Spain – a result regarded as one of the biggest shocks in world football in recent times. The bench role is one the former Chivas keeper is accustomed to having played second fiddle to Brad Friedel last season.

But, as soon as Sunday’s final is over, Guzan will switch his attention to deposing his namesake and compatriot next term.

“I think everyone sees the level that Brad’s at and it’s not just a year here and a year there, it’s consistent year in year out,” said Guzan.

“I would like to think I’m getting close to that level. Obviously I’m working hard on the training ground and hopefully getting better and instilling the confidence in the coaching staff and my team-mates that they can count on me.

“If I’m doing that then things are going in the right direction. I think with any position in any team you wait for your chance and when you get your chance you hopefully take it and you run with it and that’s what you have to do.

“You never know when it’s going to come because Brad could get hurt a month into the season or whenever.

“He was sent off against Liverpool so you never know what’s going to happen – football’s a crazy game.”
