Dave Jones is out of Albion running
Saturday 27th June 2009, 11:27AM BST.
Cardiff boss Dave Jones is the second managerial target for Albion to distance himself from the job.
The prospect of the first man to take Wolves into the Premier League making a dramatic switch to The Hawthorns has been high in chairman Jeremy Peace’s thinking during the last week.
But, on a weekend which should see Peace make the first formal moves to replace ex-boss Tony Mowbray, I understand Jones will not be anticipating joining Preston’s Alan Irvine in a head-to-head contest for the hot-seat. The Liverpudlian’s contractual tie-in at Cardiff would make Jones the most costly replacement of all the contenders to step in at The Hawthorns.
The Cardiff boss, who is believed to have turned down the job before Mowbray two years ago, is highly regarded within the Hawthorns boardroom but believes the cost of bringing him back to the Midlands counts against him.
That follows Derek McInnes’ decision to effectively withdraw from the race with a fresh pledge of loyalty to St Johnstone – and now leaves Preston supporters waiting anxiously for the moment they are dreading.
Albion are expected to make an official approach for Irvine this weekend and Preston chairman Derek Shaw concedes that a release trigger in the manager’s contract would make him powerless to prevent talks, providing Albion hit the right figure.

Why wont Jeremy Peace stop trying to poach other clubs inexperienced managers?
Why not employ a manager who is not tied to another club- and also has experience, pedigree.
A manager such as Alan Curbishley or Steve Coppell.

Does make you wonder what we are doing sometimes,I would have thought we would have used the compo from Celtic to attract the best man.Irvine might be a smoke screen,it may still be Ferguson. But not Ince!!please.

managers such as jones and mcinnes only rule themselves out when their agents tell them that the club are not going to be in contact.
then they get the plaudits from the home fans for “loyalty” when the truth is they would both be off like a shot if they were really in the running.
Its a game.

18)35 goals in 62 apperances (1.77 a game avg)for Swindon, looked promising at Reading till broke is leg
Report abuse
correction thats 0.56 goal a game, or 1 goal every 1.77 games

18 – 43 goals in 81 matches for Swindon…..obviously that’s at a lower level than the Championship, but a ratio of a goal less than every other game is bloody brilliant!!
21 years old, so still plenty of years ahead of him too. I’m not the best person to comment on him, as haven’t seen him play live, but that’s all I can tell you. I don’t know any Swindon Town fans that to ask about him either.

22, 23 – Wikipedia’s great isn’t it?! ha ha!
I went for his entire Swindon career as opposed to just last season’s appearances.

You all take the rip out of jones for blowing an 11 point lead….he doesnt want to come! Did u watch sky sports today? No manager, no sponsor, bit of a mess to attract a proven manager. The only way forward is to go for someone with potential. Bet u guys r looking forward to playing petebrough and co…..mouthwatering.

28. rich5, Jones doesn’t want to come because he knows we don’t want him either, nor was he considered by JP. We are used to intelligent, articulate managers at The Hawthorns, particularly in recent years, although Dave Jones does claim to have written a book he’s promoting. Not bad for a bloke who pronounces ‘have’ as ‘of’. Would you like us to remind you of your post around Christmas when you’ll probably be the strongest team in the Prem….holding all the other teams up! Paradoxically, I hope not though as if we can get back up there, you’ll provide us with SIX points towards the 39 needed to stay there and consolidate.
