Gleeson set to be sold to MK Dons

Friday 26th June 2009, 10:58AM BST.

Wolves youngster Stephen GleesonWolves are on the brink of their first sale of the summer with the departure of midfielder Stephen Gleeson to Milton Keynes Dons.

The 20-year-old Republic of Ireland international ended the season at Stadium MK on loan and is moving south for an undisclosed fee.

Gleeson, who missed the Dons’ play-off bid after injuring his ankle, made just three League appearances for Wolves and failed to appear for Mick McCarthy’s Championship winners.

He did win a shock international call-up for his country under Steve Staunton, gaining two caps.

But the homegrown Dubliner has proved himself in the lower divisions after three hugely successful loan spells at Stockport, who he helped to promotion to League One via the Wembley play-offs a year ago, playing 27 games.

The same season he also played four games for Hereford, who were also promoted from League Two.

Very sorry that he didn’t manage to establish himself at Molineux and he looked a decent prospect, but if Mick doesn’t see him as potential premiership player, better for him to move to a level where he can get first team football. Good luck to him, and I’ll be following his career with interest.

Wolvesmod…..if you think a 20yr old can be discarded as “old dead wood” you need to open your eyes a bit.
Perhaps Gleeson doesn’t play McCarthy’s style, but his career is just beginning and he can go a very long way in a different team.
We might even want him back in a few years!

Worrying times ahead me thinks,Another young lad shipped out now looking to sign Tommy Smith(Watford)and Surman (Southampton)For gods sake WHERE IS the Quality players we were promised? 1 million pound players are not the answer,Unfortunatly looks like Moxey has not learned from previous experience in the premier league. In the games i saw at the mol last season SW did ok BUT it is a different ball game now and i believe that he would be seriously out of his depth in the prem at left back.We have to speculate to accumulate in this league but unfortunatly it appears that a working profit overides footballing success in Moxeys mind.

Shame. I thought this guy had a lot of potential and looked to use the ball very well.

Davies, Andrews, Mahon, Clingan – we’ve let too many of our homegrown young midfielders go in haste. We may be in the prem now but just because he’s not quite ready for that level yet is not in itself a reason to sell a promising 20-year old. The mantra is “young and hungry” but I’m concerned we’re not giving our homegrown young and hungry players a chance.

If we don’t see at least one significant signing in the next few days I fear it will be only one season in the top flight anyway. Matt Kilgallon or Calum Davenport would do for me (or preferably both).

Our youth system rarely fails, cant really mention Clingan, he like Gleesan is a poor champ player at best unfortunately. Over the last 10 years we have seen Murray, Keane, Naylor, Lescott, Hennessey all come through and alot of clubs and fans would be proud of that.

Whilst Steven Ward ain’t my fav player & wouldn’t be in my starting 11 next season, nor would at the back end of last season to be honest, you have to give credit where its due, he played in a championship WINNING team, so show the lad some respect. I think some of you lot on here think it was our right to win the league coz we had a good start I can think of about 3 seasons in the last 15 when we have challanged for automatic promotion, one of them, last season we lead the league from start to finsh & all concerned deserve a massive amount of credit for that.

Secondly you state that 19,000 season tickets is “nothing”, a month & a half before a ball is to be kicked, I’d have a good bet that there is no more than 10 clubs in the country that have sold more.

The thing is with Gleeson is that he is tiny.

Not saying he aint a good player I haven’t seen enough of him to form an opinion, but MM likes to have acouple of 6 footers in the middle of the park, that’s why we saw very little of Mark Davies, I’m not knocking him for it, if thats how he wants to set his team up its up to him, he’s done alright up to yet.

But that’s why Gleeson is being allowed to go & I would imagine the lad just wants to play fotball & move his career forward

58,Alex Rays Butler,Read my psots correctly before you make your comments.I stated that Steven Ward played OK when i came over last season,But like a lot lot of other people am worried about his capability in the prem.Regarding MM I never said he would balls up promotion.I am a wolves fan through and through but i have a right to be concerned when so little activity is taking place in the transfer market. You obviously do not like people to have their own opinion just one that agrees with yours.
