Doyle hope despite Bolton bid

Thursday 25th June 2009, 11:00AM BST.

kevin-doyle3Wolves owner Steve Morgan hints the club remain confident of signing £6.5million target Kevin Doyle – despite Bolton matching the asking price.

Fulham are believed to have joined Wolves in holding talks with the Reading striker, while Bolton and Sunderland are also interested.

Growing interest in the Republic of Ireland international means the process could become a slow-burner.

But, asked how confident he was of bringing in Doyle, the Wolves owner-chairman’s hopes were high.

He said: “I’m very confident that we’re signing players at the right level and age to come to the club and bring competition for places.

“Kevin Doyle is a quality player and all the players we’re talking to are quality players.

“We’re still hoping to sign two or three. If someone like him becomes available, then we have to be interested.

“We had a number of players lined up for specific positions and we’re having very constructive talks with several players at the moment.

“I’d like to think we’ll make further announcements in the next week or two.”

Wolves have barely touched the £30million investment Morgan has ringfenced as part of his takeover of the club, since swelled by the further £30million of TV money gained by winning promotion.

The 56-year-old multi-millionaire insists the fee for Doyle and others are within budget.

He said: “I wouldn’t say we’re pushing the boat out – the club has a budget that we will work to.

“But we’re determined to bring quality to the club.”

After missing out on several targets – in particular centre-backs, where players such as Sami Hyypia, Aaron Mokoena and Scott Dann have slipped their grasp, Morgan believes boss Mick McCarthy is working through a list of potential signings.

The Molineux supremo said: “We’ve identified a pool of players, because you never get every man you’re looking for.”

Wolves have also denied reports Marseilles defender Ronald Zabur is flying in for talks.

But the chairman is confident the playing squad will have half a dozen new faces when the window closes.

He added: “I think altogether we’re looking to sign around six, with the two already signed.”

We are a newly promoted club who do not pay ridiculous money like some so we have certain limitations. However as we have found out in the last 3 years you can pick up some quality from smaller clubs or fringe players from other clubs if we get the 4 below were be somewhere handy:

    Kevin Doyle or Jason Scotland
    Joe Ledley
    Ronald Zubar

We should be encouraged that MM is trying to stregthen the spine of the team, from GK, centre backs, Centre Mids and Forwards, i have confidence in MM and the board and think we will be (a very positve) OK next season :)

Drop him and get 2 or 3 quality defenders.
Any team that lets 8 goals in against NORWICH has priories at the other end.
Also Doyle is not a target man which is really what we need to assist SEB.
Finally I don’t like being kept waiting by someone like him.
What he is saying is if anyone else comes in from the Premier I will go there BUT if no one comes in I can always have a season at Wolves.

Yet another case of E&S mixing and matching stories yet again. Its a completely different interview with Steve Morgan who only says he is an ‘admirer’ of Doyle – there is still nothing of any kind of evidence. My opinion is that he is way overpriced, and sadly even SEB will struggle in the prem, getting 10 goals if he’s lucky and he’s twice the striker Doyle is. We need more creativity for the strikers, remember, without Kightly we’re useless.

But Fulham are rumoured to be chasing anybody and everybody.

Draw a line in the sand Wolves for agent and Doyle (if they and Reading are happy with the offer) – take it or leave it by this date your plane ticket to Oz is waiting at check-in.

The agent will be more worried about losing out should any deal collapse from Fulham buying someone else – and Doyle remaining at Reading until the New Year window.

    Play hard ball Jez –
Doyle would be good but there are other options.

New players missing the Australia trip will be at and disadvantage (especially those coming from abroad) and ultimately Wolves will be at a disadvantage.

If your gonna slate a team for doing 1 thing why urge your team to do the same. A bit hypocritical me thinks. p.s Even though I’m a Baggies fan I realise the majority of you Wolves fans know what your going on about and understand how your feeling about signing no one of substance yet. same old e&s, this was yesterday’s news!! anyway I think we have missed the boat with Doyle because lets face it he would have signed by now and apparently he was shown around the training ground over the weekend gone!! another suggestion is Dean Ashton, yes I know he is injury prone and probably on big wages but apparetnly west ham are willng to sell and if Stoke are being linked with him then surely we should be able to compete with the likes of the potters.

Mick & Jez, I have this feeling that we are penney pinching to much, I agree we shouldn’t be spending madly but we need to start getting the players in sooner rather than later. What will happen come the end of August is that if we want a certain type of player who will h\ave to pay big bucks for him so get the business done now and you may save the money

Obviously it’s in the hands of Doyle’s agent who is touting him around to any Prem. rival with half an interest in signing him. Personally I think our chances of signing him are remote, I don’t think we can compete with the salaries of all these established other teams yet. I hope we have alternative targets such as Ross McCormack who has indicated his desire to play in the top flight. He knows how to find the net and would cost less than Doyle and has more improving to do than him.
Regarding Matt Mills, from what I’ve seen of him he actually looks more accomplished than Roger Johnson on the ball and I would sign him up straight away for £3 million and not mess around any more (or risk losing him to the Blues again).

Can anyone explain to me why we are going to Australia for a two match exhibition against outfits I am advised are the standard of our 2nd division…….then again, maybe signing ‘Muscat’ while we are there will ensure that no other premiership club will out bid us for this stylish ‘hit man’

    Sign Michael Owen!

Having him in a Wolves shirt would certainly raise our profile…imagine all the immediate media interest he’d generate. I like Doyle too, but signing him is hardly front page news.

Owen’s wages may be excessive but surely they’d be more than paid for by his off field commercial value. We could actually pay him 500K a month for the season and he’d still be cheaper than signing Doyle…who has no commercial value.

Now that we are a premiership club Wolves will have the opportunity to sell themselves more. Owen would probably sell more shirts worldwide than the rest of the squad put together. Here in the USA Premiership soccer is big & easily accessible. Fans love to follow big name players, and prove their lifelong loyalty through buying every bit of merchendise they can get their hands on. Owen’s brochure claim’s he is the 2nd most famous English player in the world, after Beckham…and here they love that kind of stuff.

On the pitch Owen’s not as good as he was but is still easily good enough for the Premiership. Give him chances and he’ll put plenty of them away. Surely his experience would be a great asset on & off the pitch too. Who would your money be on for scoring a ‘keep us in the Premiership goal’ at Old Trafford…Owen or Fortune? Or Keogh!

Anyway, I know he’s good… I just read it in his own 32 page brochure. I’m now a believer!

‘the athlete; the ambassador; the icon’.

while brum are signing every mediocre player going, what are our lot doing ? sitting on their thumbs. they really need 2 get their finger out n start signing good players. we had all this spin last time and we ended up premiership whipping boys. hope the refs get better eyes come next season n all.

Why does it take so long for wolves to finalise a deal? When blues identify a target they close the deal before other clubs become interested. We are simply not showing enough when negotiating contracts with these players, and for all the posters coming on this board and telling people to be patient, will you still be saying this when were being beat 4 or 5 every week because we did not show enough ambition in the transfer market? i think not. Some of us remember what a balls up our last prem campaign was, and dont want it to happen again.

Please be patient everyone. Blues have gone out and spent mega bucks, but would people on here be happy if the club had spent £20 million on what the Blues have brought in so far. Mr. Morgan is not a fool.

We are a newly promoted club who do not pay ridiculous money like some so we have certain limitations. I believe that we have the nucleus of a side that can finish in the top half if we can add a few more quality players in. The 4 or 5 below would do.
    Pele
    Van Basten
Ronaldo (either one, or even better, both)
    Cruyff
    loan signings :-
    Torres
    Rooney
    Terry

Well Johnson has signed for the Blues then. He says he’s pleased to have signed for a ‘massive’ club (lol). I’m sure we don’t need any comedians on board. As much as I despise Stoke even though I live there they are a bigger club than Blues hands down!! He must be on a good salary like Dann!! As I have said before Mills from Doncaster looks a far more promising prospect but we need to move PDQ for £3 million or risk losing him to the St Andrews mob again!!!

Apologies peeps for the apparent irrelevance of my piece but I replied earlier to the Doyle situation (no. 28).

Hmmm, Dean Ashton still young and hopefully hungy at 25 and a cracking player to boot…when fit. We have learnt the lessons fron Daley, De Wolf, Froggatt etc. now though haven’t we? A viable alternative to Doyle along with Ross McCormack?

67 – He does have a point though. As it is now, Collins would be 4th choice defender, and knowing that Craddock probably wouldnt cut it in the Premier at his age, and knowing that at some stage Stearman, or Berra will be out with suspension, or injury, it does leave the path for Collins to step right back in, wide open.

He was out of his depth in the Championship, and I dont want to think about what would happen if he were ever to wear a Wolves shirt against the likes of Torres.

9… you total pillock, teams like newcastle threw all kinds of money at all and sundry and got relegated and now they will be in financial trouble with no quality to get out of , arguably , the hardest championship in ages. Some of you need a reality check, survival is the NUMBER 1 priority this season…end of, then consolidation, get a football brain some of you!!!

44 – We may have 4 but i think we are lacking in quality. Ward was carried bye the rest of the team throughout, Hill is a Championship player, Friend – unproven at even championship level yet but potentially the best of the 4, and Elokobi who surely is just a joke figure at best and despite his determination and commitment simply not a footballer

I think everyone needs to calm down – a lot of Clubs have yet to dump their unwanted players. It has to be assumed that Wolves management is talking to players who know they will be moving on or want to move on.
It also makes sense to put some bird seed out to deflect the press from seizing on what the Club is really after in their negotiations.
The financial decisons surrounding purchase of players is also changing. Man U reportedly will not buy players over 25 years of age- for good reason. They have to build value and yield a profit if they move on. Too many Clubs are on the edge financially – Wolves do not need that.

Keep the faith people – COME ON YOU WOLVES!!!

No. he doesn’t have a point, because he never actually makes one beyond slagging off Ward , Collins and anyone who disagrees with him – which in his own little world makes them Muppets, Happy Clappers or both.
You on the other hand have made a reasoned point and am happy to discuss. You are correct in what you say, but given that he (Collins)hasn’t featured since Reading away, I would say that he either needs to improve greatly on last year to feature, or We will be bringing in players who will be higher in the pecking order.
My own view is that he is nowhere near Prem class on his performances last year, and he has faults which will be exploited even more in this league. He is still relatively young however and may improve ( but probably not to Prem standard)His biggest asset is the way he attacks the aerial ball in both boxes, but on the floor – forget it and for a player who is obviously committed, I feel that he doesn’t put the extra effort in to block shots etc.
The main point – we don’t know yet who we will start with in August and beyond, so slagging players off ewho may not even feature is rather pointless.
    Lets wait and see.

Morgan said were only going to sign another 3 or 4 players… its radiculous wolves are gonna be a joke for another premier league campaign

Why are everyone panicking? Birmingham have signed absolute tosh in Carr, Hart is a good shot stopper but awful at controlling his box and Hughes identified that straight away. The south american has never played in Europe. Roger Johnson and Scott Dann have never played higher than the championship and again there was no point us signing them as they are no better than what we have although they would of been useful squad players they are too slow. I am not panicking at all, we will sign quality. Blues are too old and Burnley not good enough, Stoke, Hull, Pompey etc will struggle not to mention Wigan

The transfer window isn’t even open yet!

Is there a need for Doyle? we allready have a striker to partner blake, KEOGH. :p

91 – you refer to the transfers completed by Birmingham and then in the next line say the transfer window isn’t open. Does that make any sense to you?!

The following is from the FA Premier League:

“The first Transfer Window in any year shall commence at midnight on the last day of the season and shall end on 31 August next if a Working Day, if not, on the first Working Day thereafter, at a time to be determined by the Board.

The second Transfer Window in any year shall commence at midnight on 31st December and shall end on the 31st January next if a Working Day or, if not, on the first Working Day thereafter, at a time to be determined by the board.”

July 1st is the date you can begin to register players, it has nothing to do with when you can actually start making offers and offers can be accepted.

91- why do we even care whi brum sign? I will tell u why because they are doing the right things. Getting good quality players and getting players from the right places and splashing cash. Something that wolves aren’t doing. Blues will finish probs near the top of the bottom of the table. Wolves on the other hand mite as well stay where they are at the moment without a ball being kicked. Bottom. If you ask me its a absolute joke because mcarthy never has and never will be premier class with his mind and his stupid arrogant attitude.
