McInnes ‘not ready’ for Albion job

Thursday 25th June 2009, 10:59AM BST.

derek-mcinnes3St Johnstone chairman Geoff Brown claims Derek McInnes is not ready to be Albion’s new boss – and will not be offered the job.

The former Baggies skipper has been strongly linked with the vacant manager’s post at the Championship club, with fans and bookmakers establishing McInnes among the favourites alongside Peterborough’s Darren Ferguson.

Brown’s comments come as Albion head into the crucial days of the club’s hunt for Tony Mowbray’s successor.

Chairman Jeremy Peace has all but completed his research into the leading candidates and is ready to open formal communications, with a view to interviews over the weekend and an appointment by the time the players return for pre-season training in the middle of next week.

So far St Johnstone have received no approach for their manager, who has completed his first full season by winning promotion into the SPL.

Brown remains adamant McInnes would be better off staying put at McDiarmid Park.

The chairman said: “There have no approaches from West Brom and I don’t believe there will be.

“I think that job would be too early for Derek, because he has only been here since a year past in November.

“He has done very well for St Johnstone, but I don’t think he has been tested to the limits yet.

“The board at West Brom will want automatic promotion from the Championship next season and that is some test.

“I don’t believe it is the right time for Derek to move.”

Peace will not restrict his search to one preferred target, but interview as many as four candidates before making a decision.

But he is determined to keep to a media black- out, having felt both Bryan Robson and Mowbray arrived in the job handicapped by “second choice” labels, as news of talks with other contenders leaked out.

One of them was former Wolves boss Dave Jones, now at Cardiff, who has again been discussed by Peace and has hinted at an uncertain future.

Preston’s Alan Irvine is also in Peace’s thoughts as well as Ferguson, but both candidates would require heavier compensation packages than the popular McInnes.

I would guess Peter Ridsdale statement this morning would echo my interview with the E&S prior to the end of last season.

Jeremy is and always has been very interested in taking Dave Jones to The Hawthrons and an official approach is on the horizon according to several media outlets.

While all this speculation keeps us interested and gives the press something to write about at a quiet time while most players and managers are on a beach somewhere that is all it can be, speculation. What are the criteria?
Experience, been there got the T shirt. Curbs Coppell.
Heart ruling the head: Ossie, Superbob.
    No compo: Ince, Hoofroyd.
    Young and keen: Baby Fergie.
    Club connections/allegiance: Dekka
Fans choice: There must have been 20 names mentioned, including Irvine, Mclaren, Jol Jones.
We will just have to wait and see. The best man for the job. Whoever it is we must get behind him and the players.

I think some one with real premiership type credentials are needed.
Why is JP not looking at getting mclaren back to england.
He should be able to attract the type of players needed and at least has premiership and international experience.

I hate to say it becuase Mciness is my fav of the bunch but this Brown geezer is right. Mciness is one for the future and when the time is right for him to become albion boss then everyone including Mciness himslef will know its the right time. As for Dave Jones i wouldn’t want him anyway, i still reckon we will end up with Irvine and finish playoff positions then the blame will go straight to Peace. But when you think about it what manager would get us automatic? I just cant see it. Mowbray would have had the best chance but its all in the past now.

Lets hope whoever we get ( please god not paul ince) we stick by them and boing back via another trip 2 wembley :)

If we do need to pay compensation to a club, surely that’s the better option IF the best person for the job is available via that route??

I agree that DM is being linked with the job at the Shrine a bit too soon, and personally would still prefer to see Fergie Jnr at the helm above anyone else, but there are so many good candidates I think a lot of us will be surprised when the new boss is announced.

Personally, I don’t care who the manager is as long as he continues the style of play that has been missing from Albion for so long. We now play attractive football and as long as we can apply the killer punch in front of goal and not get too silly protecting our own net then we should be okay.
Okay, I would prefer someone who wouldn’t use the team as a shop window to advertise how good he is with the hope of a bigger club will come calling and I would like a manager who is hungry for success and willing to learn from his mistakes.
I know that Peace wants us to succeed and doesn’t want us to get into debt. I have had many conversations with my brother over this and both of us agree that we want the club to get back into the premiership and stay there. I therefore have to trust our chairman and I hope that whoever he picks will share the same dreams and asperations of both the chairman and, more importantly in my opinion, those of the fans.

Just looking at the transfer news on the main page, why would the E&S think we’d be interested that our previous manager is looking to take an ex player to Celtic, Can’t they just put “all quiet at the Hawthorns” ??

I still look at all the names banded about regarding the ‘New’ manager and to be quite honest not one of them jumps out at me and gets me revved up. It must be a very difficult position for the club to be in as anything less than promotion or even play off’s will be considered as failure. Even before Mowbray joined us I quite liked the look of Coyle but that wont happen now but Irvine may have the desire to succeed and I think he’s done a fair job at Preston with limited resources,he had a good tutor with Moyes. I think Fergie & McInnes may be a little green at present but a definite ‘No No’ to Ince & Jones etc. The next week will be very interesting to say the least.

JP gets alot of abiue from fans behind the scenes, but you must admit he has a sound business brain – he doesnt get into debt, and gets the best value from player sales and compensation from leaving managers!.
I have faith in whoever he picks they will be the right man for the job – I still want to see attarcative football as mowbry installed, but with that ability to land the sucker punch.
My preference would be for Fergie Jr, Coleman, or Coppell- Def not Maclaren, but whoever he picks ill be there cheering us on!

none of these fit the bill
my first choice would still be choice
but if not then im leaning towards steve mclaren

    10) Whether or not McLaren would be a good appointment or not (personally i don’t believe he would be) its a pointless discussion because he’d never come. He’s managing a club competing at the top of the Eredivisie, has european football too look forward to next season and is building a decent team there. It’s the same case with people campaigning for Jol. We might as well be disucssing whether or not Wenger would be a good appointment.

Coley, the ones who abuse JP are probably the same few who abused TM until he left. Most people realise he is superb at doing what he does best, selling at inflated prices the stuff we don’t want, keeping the business viable and solvent, not accepting second best. Picking the next manager is going to make him a hero or a villain. One Hell of a responsibilty. There are those who want a man installed yesterday. I wouldn’t. If I couldn’t get EXACTLY the man I was looking for, then for a few weeks I’d let Appleton run the show. He ticks as many boxes as some of the young blokes we see in the candidates.
I see Meite is reported as ‘wanting to stay in the Prem’. Hull are said to be interested.
He’d better take his crutches with him, their bloke will make him play with or without them!

Well, i’ve posted several times on here in recent weeks that Dave Jones would be the best choice (just look at his consistant record at several clubs at all levels)IMO. So i wont bother to add any further comment on other candidates, just to say this.

Whoever gets the nod from JP, i just hope he is deemed (by the board at least)to be the best man for the job, and not as i fear, appointed because there was no compo to pay out. Meaning, in effect, that the £2M+ compo we got from Celtic was a nice little Brucie bonus for the clubs coffers! If we need to spend the entire £2M+ on getting the RIGHT man in, then so be it!

However even funnier than these “bambi on ice” esque efforts is the bitter duplicity when Dann went to Blues, Doyle, and Johnson`s possible un-arrival.
