Council owns up to taking festival signs
Thursday 25th June 2009, 11:30AM BST.
The mystery of “stolen” road signs advertising a flower festival near Wolverhampton was solved today – as council bosses admitted they had taken them down.
Villagers were mystified after five signs for the annual Worfield Flower Festival vanished from roadsides – mainly on the A454. Thieves were at first being blamed but after the mystery had been reported in the Express & Star, organisers were tipped off that officials may be to blame.
Organiser Maureen Turner had a number of phone calls telling her that signs advertising another flower festival in Bridgnorth had gone missing.
She contacted Shropshire Council, which said it had the signs. She has recovered them, and it is thought no further action will be taken.
Mrs Turner said today: “It’s the law apparently.
“I didn’t know that and how were we supposed to know that?
“I think it was a bit heavy-handed.
“They could have phoned us to tell us.”
She said officials asked her to get in touch with her ahead of next year’s festival so that suitable locations for the signs could be found.
Shropshire County Council spokesman Jennifer Fullard said: “Our environmental maintenance teams have a duty to monitor and remove any instances of fly-posting in the county to protect and improve Shropshire’s environment.
“The council monitors how many signs are permitted on the highway to ensure that they do not distract motorists and present a hazard.
“We are more than happy to discuss any concerns the organisers may have and we encourage them to contact us.”
The event runs from Saturday to Monday at Peter’s Church, Worfield. It is now in its 45th year and will feature attractions including bric-a-brac, books, cakes, plants and tombola.
The festival attracts hundreds of people each year and all proceeds go to St Peter’s.
More information on the event is available from Maureen Turner by telephoning 01746 716665.

I think that these kind of signs are dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed. Whilst you are trying to read the details on the signs, you are taking your eyes off the road.

Dear Ruitonian, please don’t drive on the M6 in the near future as the proposed and passed 65ft high ad boards will cause your head to explode. I presume you do not take your eyes off the road to look at the instruments or have the radio on. I fear you do protest too much about a little village event.

Well done Shropshire County Council, weild the big stick and don’t let those minions put signs up without asking the masters first. What a bunch of jobsworths.
I suppose you can show that over the last 45 years the number of road accidents has increased every time Worfield advertise their flower show.
Can I just remind Shropshire County Council spokesman Jennifer Fullard and the morons that work with her, that they are paid by the public and are there to serve the public NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND.

Come on, we need some signs up in the village for the Wheel, the Vauxhall garage, the petrol station, the butchers, Uncle Tom Cobley and all. The Council have no idea what they’re trying to do trying to keep the kids safe on the roads and as for that 40 mph limit, I’ve driven down that road at 60 and not killed dozens of pensioners. Should be back up to 60 mph for cars and lorries, how dare the Council pretend to be looking after families safety and stopping all sorts of signs popping up, I want these English villages to look like Benidorm, lets get some action in the village.
