Three clubs ready to join Doyle race

Wednesday 24th June 2009, 10:59AM BST.

kevin-doyle21Reading are resigned to losing Kevin Doyle – but Fulham, Bolton and Sunderland are all believed to be ready to match the £6.5million asking price for the Wolves target.

Fulham have now made contact with his club, while Bolton have now indicated their interest in the Republic of Ireland international and Sunderland are also thought to be keen.

Interested clubs must meet the £6.5million asking price to trigger a release clause in Doyle’s contract.

Bolton and Sunderland in particular have money to spend, with the latter’s new manager Steve Bruce keen to make his mark on a club fresh from a takeover.

Reading’s director of football Nick Hammond admits his club are fighting a losing battle to keep the player.

He said: “I guess he will want to play in the Premier League this year.

“Kevin is a professional. He goes about his business in the right way. He made a big commitment to us last summer in choosing to stay.

“He gave it his best shot with us and was top goalscorer.

“This year it will be very difficult to keep hold of him and the interest we have already had suggests that.”

Having just reached the Premier League, Wolves don’t possess the financial clout of the other three clubs.

But they have presented a strong case to the 25-year-old.

Wolves are the only club to have held talks with the player so far, after Doyle was shown around Compton Park.

Chief executive Jez Moxey is playing his cards typically close to his chest, and remains tightlipped on the identity of the club’s transfer targets.

But Moxey is hopeful Wolves can land the targets they want.

He said: “All I will say is that we continue to pursue the players we believe can strengthen our squad for the Premier League.

“We will continue that process quietly and efficiently behind the scenes.

“Any announcements regarding signings will come when we feel we have something definite to say.”

Wolves believe there may be another new signing to follow midfielder Nenad Milijas and goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, before the players return for pre-season training at Compton on Monday morning.

So we wont be signing him then. Note Moxey is covering his back already by saying “we will continue to pursue players” so he’ll say they have offered big fees but the player wouldnt join.
Birmingham look likley to land Roger Johnson from Cardiff, another player we should be looking at.

Why did you think it was a done deal? At no point has it ever been considered ‘in the bag’ – he came and had a look around, he is perfectly entitled to consider all options available to him.

We are in the running, along with a handful of other clubs, it’s now down to Kevin Doyle where he wants to play his football next season – we can only hope that it will be with us.

Until it is announced on the the club website, nithing can ever be thought of as a ‘done deal’.

Its no good criticizing Moxey, we are at a disadvantage as we have only just been promoted to the premier league, The club tend to go about their transfer activity quietly behind the scenes.

With regard to Doyle depending on which local Reading papers you read the chronicle and the post, the chronicle says its almost a done deal and the post which the above story is from other clubs are in the frame.

It would be foolish to conduct our business in public and like so many fans I would have liked more comfirmed signings but at the end of the day we are not involved in these negotiations and it is therefore difficult to gauge how close we are to signing a player.

One other thing of the players Birmingham have signed are any of them going to set the world on fire. I dont think so.

A lot can happen between now and the end of August and I would be very surprised if a few surprises didnt come out of the woodwork

Can’t believe anyone actually thought this deal was done, based on information (or lack thereof) in the E&S. Surely, we must be prepared to lose out on Doyle, even if a lot of supporters – me included – would like to see this guy at the Mol (not playing for the opponent team!). I just hope that if this deal doesn’t happen, it will not be due to any lack of effort or will to spend some serious money when it really matters. Even if we should fail on this one, imv showing real intent- as well as some decent results – when it comes to transfer targets will be crucially important in the weeks to come. Well, where are they then????

We’ve been promoted for two months, yet have only managed to sign 1 player – an ageing goalie from Reading. Miljas is not a done deal yet, and I doubt it will be.

Are we targetting the wrong players? Dont we want to pay the prices??

    Not panicking but not happy!

    To pick out some points:

    26. Yes we did win the Championship comfortably…but that says as much about the poor quality of the Championship as how good we are! We also went 13 games with only 2 wins at one stage in the season. We won’t get that luxury again! Hull City scenarios happen once every 20 years!

Roger Johnson – an extremely good signing in my book and worth every penny of £5m. Not only solid defensively but he will guarantee you 5/6 goals a season….gold dust when you compare that with how little our defenders contributed to the goal cause last season.

In general terms, I agree with the Moxey approach of doing your business quietly until the job’s done but equally there is history for several seasons where we’ve left our signings till late in the day and even though the point is made that few clubs are doing much business at the moment, the promoted teams need to be doing business the most!!

Haven’t lost the sense of optimism but getting a little nervous when compared with Blues. They have made a strong declaration of intent and other players in the market will see that. I’m not sure our statement is being heard!

We are in the market at the right level this time… with Morgan making the spending decisions (Not like Moxey last time)… we will sign plenty of quality ..it will just take time

    59. We go for quality not quantity.

Wolves have a far better squad and team spirit compared to Small Heath.

As for Johnson, he is good but no way is he worth 5mil and Scott Dann is a mediocre defender at best.

I’m very confident Milijas is the midfield maestro we’ve been crying out for and will slice defences open with his passing ability.

Joe Hart is a good acquisition to Small Heath although we are known for our Ability to produce Quality goalkeepers so personally I’m not too bothered.

Wolves are in talks with many players currently it’s just we go about our business very quietly instead of broadcasting every deal done including the sums each time we sign someone.

Come 1st of July when Chelsea have a manager and cover at CB we should and probably will bid for Mancienne who is better than Dann and Johnson combined.

And in talks with Nolan?? I think you’ll find he’d rather stay on his 50k a week wage at Newcastle, though seeing you lot go bust wouldn’t be a bad thing.

    Wolves are Staying Up :)

The way I see it you will be lucky to spend £6.5m in total.

61-I agree. They’ve wasted £4m on a slow, mistake-prone, unproven, champo defender. They’ve paid £5m on a £3m rated defender who again is unproven.

I am quite happy that Wolves are doing business slowly but effectively. Obviously a few deals are at an advanced stage – and with Steve Morgan stating we will be a force in the Prem next season – it makes me believe we are going to be in for a very pleasant surprise. Hold your horses doubters – lets watch it all unfold !!

This isn’t Fantasy Football, for those people who think footballers will see our club the way WE AS FANS see it WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE.
If you were “In demand” and loads of companies wanted your services and you just accepted the first offer without speaking to anybody else then you’re an idiot.
Remember this is JUST A JOB to these guys, we are not an established Premier League team yet and until we are it will be very difficult to sign the type of players we’d all love to sign.
Leave it to The 3Ms they know what they’re doing.

i really hope we buy ronald zubar he is a great player i have seen him play a few times when i lived in nice and drove to watch him in marsaille hes the kind of defender who likes to get stuck in and who isnt scared of going in for a challange which i think our centre backs do alot of they always seem to back off someone running with the ball but zubar isnt like that he stands his ground i honestly think if wolves buy him for 2.5 million it will be a steal and we will have a great centre back lets just keep our fingers crossed ay shame about doyle but there are some really good strikers out there its just about finding the ones who havent lost there hunger like owen. freddy sears from west ham has alot of ambition just lacks knowledge at the moment maybe west ham will let him go out on loan who knows keep faith utw.

Nash and Swaine shut up unless you actually want to print something worth reading !!!! Good to see them giving Stearman a big write up, a couple of paragraphs, compared to the columns of pap on Doyle.

I DON’T CARE IF THIS SOUNDS LIKE MOANING! DO YOU NOT THINK WE ARE ENTITLED TO IT?

i will judge again on kick off day when players have been brought but as i see it now i think we have a dam right to have a grumble as it is as if we have all walked into a time machine and gone back to 2003.

My first problem is MR MOXEY, yes i agreee he runs the club in a very professional manner a manner in which has seen us make a profit in recent yrs (very few clubs do) …. but one comment has made his bed: “we have been there before and we now realise that in the premiership money is the be all and end all”!!!

Then why are we recruiting a old goalkeeping has been? a untried and tested drunk driver who has never set foot in england nevermind played at this level? and constantly linked with 2 to 3 mill nobodies?

It makes me sick to the back teeth of all the false promises AGAIN, we have no chance of landing DOYLE fact! WE HAVE NO REAL CHANCE OF LANDING ANYONE HALF DECENT! one reason why is there is a wage cap been set which is 25k max, no bad you may think, but when players such as KEVIN NOLAN, ALAN SMITH, NICKY BUTT, HUDDLESTONE etc are 50k minimum this should tell you the sort of players we can attract! the other problem is transfer fees, if you are not willing to pay 6-7 million for an young english playmaker (desperately needed) HUDDLESTONE! then i don’t know what to expect!

IF THAT IS GIVING IT A REAL GO THEN HELP!!!

out of our entire squad 3 people have premiership experience! SCARED? we should be!
Dave Jones (average championship player) part player at derby, Hanaman (reading) and our very own Craddock, and we all know how dreadful he was in prem!

OUR SQUAD SCRAPED THROUGH SO MANY GAMES THE 2ND PART OF LAST YR, THIS CURRENT SQUAD EVERYONE IS RAVING ABOUT IS NOT ALL THAT! FACT!

HAPPY CLAPPER WHO KNOW JACK ABOUT FOOTBALL ILL LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR GOLD N BLACK TARRED RUBBISH REPLY!

Crowfish, are you seriously suggesting we pay the likes of Butt, Smith and Nolan (or players with a similar lack of ability) 50K per week? …and you’re saying other people know jack about football.

People keep talking about 2003. Which regulars from that season would we want in our team now, Ince and Irwin possibly? We are in so much stronger a position than then. Let The Blouses get on with their panic buying, I hope it works out for them, but we don’t need to join in.

So if we don’t pay in excess of 50K, we’ll get players worse (if possible) than Smith and Butt. And you’re calling me a dummy. Instead of petulant name-calling, try being realistic for 1 split second.

I love the Wolves as much as anybody and can’t wait for the season to start, however I’d be very concerned if we started offering players 50K wages. I want us to be successful, but not regardless of the long term costs. How about a return to the Bhatti brothers era of the early eighties? How about nearly going out of business like Leeds or Southampton. I’m very sorry if I don’t share your desire to risk the future of our great club, but that does not make me a dummy.

I’ll savour every second of next season and if we get relegated, I’ll savour every second of our Championship campaign the season after.

Moxey won’t be held to ransom by agents and that suits me fine. New faces will come and I’ll get 100% behind them.

im sorry and you don’t want to be labelled a dummy??

Why on earth should you be happy with that?

Not saying that we will get a lesser player than smith and butt if we dont pay the 50k im merely stating that this is what we face with players demands, example, doyle – our cap would be 25k but fulham, everton, bolton etc established premier league outfits will easily slap another 10k on top therefore cutting us right out! my point is if your willing to pay 25k only then im afraid were going to struggle to sign anyone of any real quality!

your point about the Bhatti brothers, is that some sort of (ive been a fan for so many yrs) comment? cos if so it is a very lame arguement!
One because there is no where near the amount of money flying around then as there is now, and two our club is being run correctly with people with real business knowledge and financial clout.

Leeds were stupid playing ridiculas amounts of money for average players! But southampton are not in the mess they are in for the same reasons, so check your facts!

I WILL BE BEHIND MY TEAM 100% AS ALWAYS!

    HOME AND AWAY AS ALWAYS!

BUT I WILL NOT BE CONTENT TO SIT THERE AND “SAVOUR” BEING RELEGATED AGAIN!!

WHY THE HELL SHOULD I AFTER ALL THE PROMISES ETC!

YOUR OBVIOUSLY A HAPPY CLAPPER, AND NOT SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY LIVES IN THE REAL WORLD.

Crowfish 90 – our club is being run correctly with people with real business knowledge.

If you want a serious debate, fantastic, but why do you have to resort to childish name-calling.

My reference to the Bhatti Brothers was not a ‘ive been a fan for so many yrs, lame arguement’. That was me saying I want a team for me and my sons to go and support in 5 years time, 10 years time, 20 years time etc… and I don’t want us to take unsustainable risks for the sake of one season.

If that makes me a ‘HAPPY CLAPPER’, then I’m a happy clapper and proud of it. If I didn’t see the world through ‘GOLD N BLACK TINTED SPECS’, then I probably wouldn’t waste half my life reading these message boards.
