A Conservative councillor who drove twice while disqualified today apologised for his actions after a court banned him from driving for two years.

Councillor Mumshad Ahmed, said he was sorry for any embarrassment caused and he intended to remain in his seat.

The 35-year-old was yesterday given a suspended prison sentence and two-year driving ban by magistrates at Redditch.

He was caught at the wheel of a BMW on Mill Lane and Baxter Avenue in Kidderminster despite being banned for six months in December last year.

He also had no insurance and was given 200 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty.

Councillor Ahmed, who lives in Hurcott Road, Kidderminster, said in a statement that he now wanted to “draw a line” under what had happened and continue to serve his constituents in the Broadwaters, St Georges and St Oswalds area.

In a statement, he said: “I would like to express my deepest regret for my recent severe lapse in judgement and unreservedly apologise for my actions and any embarrassment they have caused.

“I have let myself down, my family down, and most importantly the people who have put their faith in me, my constituents.”
