Midfielder assistant’s pick for skipper
Tuesday 23rd June 2009, 8:30AM BST.
Stafford assistant manager Darren Read has tipped midfielder Bobby Wilson as the man to captain the side into “the new era.”
Rangers return to pre-season training next Tuesday currently without a skipper, after Wayne Daniel ended seven years at Marston Road to sign for Worcester.
Wilson – who returned to the club in March after a spell at Gainsborough – was one of the first to commit his future to the cause last week, along with striker Nick Wellecomme.
Nick Amos is another name in the frame for the vacant captaincy, but the experienced centre-half is still not yet confirmed as a Rangers player for next season, although talks are at an advanced stage.
Box-to-box midfielder Wilson is the assistant’s pick for the armband, but he does feel that the presence of Amos presents a “tough choice” for manager Chris Brindley.
Read said: “Bobby, in my opinion, is the man to take us forward into the new era as captain. He is not worried about his own security at the moment, he has committed his future to the club and this would be a great reward for him. He’s young and energetic enough to really make it work.
“That said, Nick is a great leader on the pitch and another strong candidate. He is a great club man and someone we are looking to keep for next season. Maybe he would he better off as the club captain, acting as a ambassador for us and giving the players guidance.
“But – assuming we can keep hold of Nick – it will be a tough choice for the manager to pick the new skipper.”
