Doyle mentor backs Wolves’ move

Tuesday 23rd June 2009, 11:30AM BST.

_42189488_staunton416Kevin Doyle has been told he will “improve immensely” in joining Wolves – by the man who launched his international career.

The Premier League new boys have held talks with the Reading striker, who would cost a club-record £6.5million.

But they are braced for a battle to land the Republic of Ireland international with the Royals still expecting plenty of interest in him, although early indications suggest Bolton aren’t one of the potential suitors – as reported elsewhere.

One of Doyle’s mentors, Steve Staunton – who has been scouting for Wolves – believes Molineux would be the ideal place to continue his career under boss Mick McCarthy.

The former Republic of Ireland coach and Walsall assistant boss has placed his faith in the player before, he gave him his first cap in his first game in charge of the national team, a 3-0 win against Sweden in March 2006.

“Kevin is hardworking – he’ll run the channels, he’s got two good feet and can score goals with his right foot, left foot and his head. He’s not bad value for money at that price.

“He’s played in the Premier League before and he has quite a few caps now. He’s maturing as a person and as a player, so he’s only going to get better and better.

“In Mick, he’ll be going to a good manager as well because he will look after him. He’s a good age, he knows the league and he knows what it’s all about.

“We all know it’s going to be a tough season for Wolves as it will be for any team coming up from the Championship, but if you can get better quality players in, you’ve got a chance.

“The manager seems to be adding to the squad nicely now, which can only be good for Wolves.”

Another Kevin who has been linked with a move to Wolves – Newcastle midfielder Nolan – won’t be coming to Molineux.

Contrary to weekend reports, sources suggest Wolves have no interest in the former Bolton man, who is thought to be earning £50,000 a week.

Nolan’s representatives reckon their client is happy to stay at St James’ Park.

Shame about Nolan – but on that type of money he’s way out of our league.

£2.5m basic a year for a bog standard Premiership midfielder – god I wish I was half decent at football.

If this deal is not sorted in the next couple of days, he is likely to go to Everton. If it falls through, I believe we are going to have to look abroad for a striker, as there is not too much quality on these shores! On this subject, this is very much the same for the other positions that need reinforcing ie centre half and midfield!
Most of the possible names, will have established Premiership signs hovering around and the Blues – most pay better wages than us!

There is no way that Newcastle can have players like Nolan at £50,000 a week in the Championship. They will have to let players go to teams like Wolves and subsidise the wages. They will go down like leeds. Too many of the squad are on silly money that won’t be paid for by Prem teams. They will be more than happy to sit it out.

I pity them, what a mess.

I didn’t even know SS was scouting for Wolves ! As for Nolan being happy at Newcastle ????? ….
yeah of course he is, he’d much sooner be playing in the Championship, for a club with an uncertain future, offloading their ‘stars’ by shedload, than coming to a newly promoted side full of young hungry talent (capped internationals).

As for the other Kevin; Doyle is the best we can get in the proven in the Prem with experience bracket, lets hope it comes off.

I think Doyle (or his agent) has been quite clever as now established Premiership clubs are also showing interest which will only increase his profile and his wages.

If he signs for us – great! as at present we can definately guarantee him first team football.

I am still disapointed of the lack of signings this year but believe MM is working hard behind the scenes to bring experienced quality in.

Has anyone left the club? We should also be looking to off load some of the players that are not worthty of wearing the mighty Gold & Black – Top of the list is Collins who was not worthy in the Chumpionship.

Don’t want Nolan. Over-rated and on stupid money. What’s he done in his career?

£6.5 million seems a bit steep. I would rather take a gamble on Owen if we are paying silly money.

Everton are skint so don’t worry about them, they won’t afford him.

It’s those sneaky bluenoses that you need to look out for.

The word on the street (my mate Roy who has contacts) says MM threatened his resignation unless we started spending big. Next day we are linked with a £6.5 million striker. Come on Morgan / Moxey loosen the purse strings. Don’t miss the opportunity like last time.

This is the way of the Premier League transfer system ..and for now we are very small fry.

Agent establishes interest with club at Wolves ‘level’. Then proceeds to hawk him around at next level up e.g Everton, whilst at the same time creating a wage auction at Clubs at our perceived level e.g Blues.

That will continue to happen throughout the Summer. The great news is that we are in the ball park prepared to pay £6.5 m for a player… this shows we mean business this time around.

We will land some of our targets. Personally I’d forget Owen ..he’s more interested in developing his Horse Racing Stables..Football is now just a cash cow to help him with that

If the player has held contract talks been shown around etc,What is holding up the deal?.Is this just another Moxey stunt as the day Season tickets go on general sale OR a genuine attempt to lure talent to the Mol.With just over seven days before the squad return to pre-season training we must start making positive moves to make the team premiership quality.

You’re right 8. Everton like many a club have got to count the pennies.
Doyle is expensive at £6.5 million. That clause was put in during the halcyon days of Coppell and the Premiership.
    He’d make a difference mind !

MM resign ? Shrewswolf mate Roy said so.
Yeah right, he told me he was helping Rolf Harris move in,
Here’s a thought…. Deitmar Hamman reckons he’s got two years left in the Premiership. Might be worth putting a towel on his sunlounger. Forget the goal he scored that cost KK his job, he might just do a Ince job for us. Right wages too. What’s Roy got to say about that ?

we are mentioning alot of players that we are after . i feel we need defenders, i think micheal manciene will come back on loan, and at least to sign sign one more defender for at the back.

May be we should be looking for a new manager and chief executive rather than new signing.
while we all agree Wolves need players with Premiership experience to survive next season, i say we also need an experienced manager and ceo.
mick was great in the championship, but what Premiership experience has he got, and moxey was part of the management failure last time we were there.

I would think it is essential for the owner to consider successful Premiership management, either to prop up mick and moxey, or to replace them altogether.

No one is going to agree with me, but remember last time we were there with the inexperienced Dave Jones, and the insipid management decisions under moxey. We all blamed the players, but they were not totally to blame.

To get quality players we will have to spend or convince players to come on loan. We still need at least six more signings I think and Hull seem to have realised you have to spend.

Doyle would be a great signing, ticks all the right boxes, young with experience of the prem & a genuine goal scorer.

Thats why we are prepared to pay £6.5 M, thats what goals cost, you don’t think if clubs were all over us for SEB that he would be going anywhere for less than £8-9 M poss even £10 M.
