Agbonlahor fitness race for semi

Tuesday 23rd June 2009, 10:03AM BST.

wd327303489-wms-villa-everVilla striker Gabby Agbonlahor will not be risked in Friday’s European under-21 Championship semi-final unless he proves his fitness.

England under-21 coach Stuart Pearce has confirmed Agbonlahor, who missed the 1-1 draw with Germany with a calf injury, will not be in his team unless he comes through training this week – but he remains optimistic over his chances.

Pearce said: “We believe he will be on the training pitch today. He has got to put a couple of days’ training in, as if he doesn’t then Fraizer Campbell or Theo Walcott are ready to take his place.

“Everyone is champing at the bit for a starting place in the semis, so Gabby knows if he isn’t on the training pitch he won’t start the game.”
