Young Saddler tipped to shine
Monday 22nd June 2009, 10:20AM BST.
Walsall defender Rhys Weston has tipped young team-mate Darryl Westlake to be the “jewel in the crown” but warns he will have to fight for his place.
The 28-year-old is preparing for the start of pre-season next Thursday and is ready for the challenge fellow right-back Westlake will provide.
Having watched the 18-year-old mature, Weston is expecting big things from the former trainee, who signed his first professional deal last month.
The Welsh defender said: “Hopefully we’ve got a little nugget, a jewel in the crown.
“I’m of the opinion that if you’re good enough you’ll play. I’ve seen him over the last 18 months and he’s got a lot of potential.
“He’s a very level-headed young man. He’s quite an unassuming lad, but he’s got decent positional sense, he’s good on the ball and can ping a decent pass.
“He’s a home-grown boy coming through the ranks which is appealing for the fans. He’s also a capable centre-back and a good footballer.
“He’ll definitely be involved in the squad this season.”
But the former Arsenal youngster isn’t about to give up his own first team spot.
He said: “It’s going to be an interesting tussle, one I’m looking forward to. Hopefully I can help Darryl bring his game on and he can help me by keeping me sharp.
“Hopefully, if my form is OK, I’ll stay in but I know if I struggle then Darryl will come in.
“He’s relatively untried at this level, but it can only help the team to have the challenge.”

I’ve been raving about this boy (as well as Smithie) for two years now. If his progression continues as I’ve seen it, he will become another million quid player. I suppose 3-400 grand to the Saddlers though ….
There are others coming through though, get to see the youth & reserves & you’ll see.
