Former Wolves target Turkey bound

onyewuu1Former Wolves target Oguchi Onyewu is set to join Fenerbahce on a three-year deal according to reports.

The giant United States centre-back is currently with his country, as they play in the Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Onyewu’s representatives had been in talks with Birmingham after Wolves ended their interest in the Standard Liege defender, who is available on a Bosman free transfer.

Standard offered him fresh terms but Onyewu, who was also linked with Fulham, has decided to try his luck in Turkey.

Wolves continue to scour the market to strengthen their central defence, with Doncaster’s Matthew Mills the latest name to be linked with a move to Molineux.

Mills, who was close to signing for Blues in January, has emerged as a reported £3million target.

It is believed boss Mick McCarthy decided against Onyewu because of personal terms, while he missed out on Sami Hyypia and Aaron Mokoena.

Wolves believe Roger Johnson was too expensive at £6million, while Sunderland’s Danny Collins was similarly thought to be priced over the odds.

They have also been linked with Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce and Middlesbrough’s Emmanuel Pogatetz after putting in a bid for Bolton’s Danny Shittu in January.

Wolves have also been linked with a £4million move for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Olexiy Gay.

The 26-year-old 15-capped Ukraine international has played all his career in his homeland.

Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead, who McCarthy took to the Black Cats, is another name mentioned.
