Albion reject Bolton bid for Robbo

Friday 19th June 2009, 11:46AM BST.

ALBION 27 DH 6Albion are ready to reject a £500,000 bid from Bolton for wantaway defender Paul Robinson.

The Baggies will turn down the Trotters’ initial bid for the veteran, which reports in the north-west claim has been lodged.

Bolton manager Gary Megson wants to be re-united with the 30-year-old left-back, who he signed for Albion from Watford in 2003.

But the opening bid from the Reebok Stadium falls well short of Albion’s valuation of the player, who still has a year remaining on his Hawthorns contract plus a further year’s option in the club’s favour.

Former manager Tony Mowbray was willing to let Robinson leave the Hawthorns after five years’ service, after repeated comments from the outspoken defender demanding a move elsewhere.

There is little sign the club’s stance has changed despite Mowbray’s departure but Albion will hold out for a seven-figure fee.

Transfer speculation continues to encircle the Hawthorns, despite the club’s continuing search for a new manager.

Baggies officials have continued to sound out potential new signings, even though no new faces are likely to arrive until they decide on Mowbray’s successor.

Former Liverpool winger Luis Garcia has become the latest man to be linked with a move.

Reports have claimed Albion had sounded out Atletico Madrid about a loan move for the 30-year-old, after he fell out of favour in the Spanish capital.

Atletico are reportedly willing to loan out the attacker with a view to a permanent signing, but it is unclear whether the Baggies will be able to persuade him to drop down to the Championship.

Any interest in Garcia would almost certainly hinge on departures, from a squad that is currently well-stocked with attacking midfielders.

In the meantime, the Baggies are continuing to sift through potential candidates for the manager’s job, with reports suggesting former Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd is a candidate.

Boothroyd’s background as Albion academy manager, allied to his friendship with sporting director Dan Ashworth has led to inevitable speculation linking him with the job.

He has confirmed in the last week he is keen to return to management, but Albion are keen to continue Mowbray’s popular style of play under the new boss.

The Baggies want to appoint a new manager before the players return to pre-season training.

Aidy Boothroyd? I hope this is speculation. I hope JP realises how big an appointment this is. How serious are we really of achieving Premership status and keeping us there? I know he only had a small budget to work with at Watford but he played route one football. This would be an unpopular choice in my opinion not as bad as Bobby Gould but up there. Our club can go one of two ways from this point, onwards and upwards or we can do a Norwich,Charlton or a Southampton. We must get this manager right not the cheapest option. I for one am a little concerned over this, its a massive decision.

On the manager front, have been scouting around a few forums, a lot of the Preston fans were criticising Irvine for his direct style, lots of high balls into the front man Parkin. Doesn’t sound promising. Posh fans can’t speak highly enough of Ferguson, although I don’t think we’ll stump up the compo.

With Alan Curbishley and Gordon Strachan on the market I’d have thought it was a straight choice between the two. Ron Atkinson is right you need experienced management in the premier and both have it. Whether Peace will pay their salaries I’m not sure but if the new manager gets them up and keeps them there, it’s cost effective.

Ferguson junior and Boothroyd are too good but somebody like Richard Drydan or Graham Turner would suffice. Or, who is that bloke managing Walsall? It’s not just me that doesn’t want Boothroyd then!
In fact judging by this straw poll he would be 100% the wrong man for the job. I think he was lucky at Watford and devoid of a plan B when they got promoted. It was ugly and unlike Stoke they could not dig in and grind out a result. Romsley and Hagley totally agree with you as well as being originally from Hagley myself. This is probably the most difficult decision Peace will have to make since he should have a choice of some good candidates, but he got it right largely with Mowbray – we need to trust he will get it right now.

He has the flight virus and he needs to be kept away from the squad who will need to have fight left come August. Still think Peace is entitled to accept more than 50k for him. Surely our ambition as a club is to get promoted in style and cement this club in the premiership fixture list indefinately. We were behind Mowbray all the way but now we have a chance of employing a manager who can really bring stability and success to the Hawthorns. Boothroyd is not that man.
Robbo does need to go but £500,000 is insulting. £1m to £1.5m is more realistic.

I personally found the story about your new Serbian midfielder being refused a work-permit more humourous laughingwolf, or the fact your only other signing is a 36-year-old.

Honest assessment of Garcia when he was in England was that he was lightweight and his ball retention was poor, yet these failings were masked by the odd 30-yard screamer in big games. Having said that, I seriously doubt we’d be chasing him in the middle of a recruitment process, sounds like an agent touting his player about.

As for the manager, this is a huge decision and if JP gets it right, which i believe he will, it will galvanize the fans, players and club like nothing before.

Robbo has been a great servant to our club, he wants to make a bit of money out of a last move, does anyone really begrudge him that? I’ve never seen him give up on chasing a ball, never seen him duck a challenge and to be honest his crossing is better than some wingers we’ve had. The people that attack him are being small minded. He kisses the badge because while he’s wearing the shirt he gives his all for it. Something not that common these days, can you say the same about Mr Cech?

Agree about Aidy Boothroyd, it would be a retrograde step and virtually the whole squad would need changing. Doubt if JP is that stupid.

I agree with the rest of you on Aidy Boothroyd – a long ball merchant. The Albion way is passing attacking football, not hoof and run. Mr Peace is smarter that that anyway, just paper talk I reckon. My choice would be Fergie jr. Derek McInnes and Super Bob is a nice thought but not enough experience for me, certainly in the future though.

Get rid of Robinson, not good enough and doesn’t want to be at the club – never did if you ask me. If Cech had been used more last season we might have had a better chance. I sat in millenium corner last year, and apart from him being skinned every game, I never saw him put one decent cross into the box. When Cech play when Robbo was injured, Cech was a threat whenever he got forward.

Get rid of Robinson, no fan wants him at the club as far as I can see, hopefully whoever the new manager is will find out what a liability he is.

Agree with all the sensible posters, no thanks to Boothroyd. If we appoint him we will need to drastically change the squad to adapt to his style of football which is not the football I have paid to watch again next season.

There is only one man in the frame for me and that’s got to be Ferguson. He’s got back to back promotions playing the right brand of football and I think he will get the best out of the current squad with a few tweaks!!

As for Robbo, unfortunately he has got to go. Great servant but not a great defender. Giving your all and running around like a headless chicken beating your chest will get you so far but no good if we concede goals from your inability to get close to the man you are marking and stopping the crosses into the box for apposing strikers to feed off!!!

Looking forward to the new season as I think Peace will get it right!!

With regard to the proposed names to be considered for the manager’s job, apart from Steve Coppell if we could get him, I would like us to consider Paul Simpson. Robbo the Gobbo has tried to leave several times and with any luck just might manage it this time. I think he’s a good player to have as he always gives his all ON THE PITCH, but may be a little too honest with the media. Other players say nowt but still go when the cheque book is waved in their face. I would hate to see Brunt go but Celtic would be perfect FOR HIM. Northern Irish/Scottish-Irish. Can Celtic afford him now he’s found himself? I think not. I see Peter Grant has said if they don’t win the SPL they’re OUT! Now that is say 10 months away. Had they all stayed here, JP might have moved them on by November. I wonder if that’s why they went? Signing on fee plus 5 months extra salary equals good business acumen. 43.DistantBaggie.
