Wolves and Kiddie look to future

Third-placed Wolves are just two points behind Kiddie in second place, but the clubs share the same “softly softly” approach to team development, which has propelled each into the thick of a fascinating championship this season.

Wolverhampton captain Simon Lycett said: “We are still within a three to five year programme in which we want to get the boys used to the demands of Premier League cricket.

“We’re very relaxed about things. We want to maintain standards and see where it takes us, but it has been a bit of roller-coaster for this club in recent years.

“We are anxious to build something sustainable.”

It’s a view shared by their Kidderminster opponents and Saturday’s contest brings together two bang in form teams.

Wolverhampton, further galvanised by the arrival of overseas pro Sairaj Bahutule, reduced Barnt Green to 34-5 and then 110 all out.

Worcestershire’s David Wheeldon with 38 not out then steered them to a seven-wicket win, with assistance from Mike Smith with 37.

Jack Snape’s 3-37 earned him the man of the match award.

Lycett said: “It was the bowlers who won us the game. Jack and Chris Russell’s opening spell, in particular, was outstanding.

“But there’s a great spirit in the club. It’s been a hard climb back from Division 2 and this game on Saturday should be something.

“We respect Kidderminster and the way they go about things, it is a very similar club to ourselves with similar morals and values.

“It is good to see both sides up there.”

Wolverhampton will be facing opposition in just as impressive form. They emerged victorious from an amazing struggle with Kenilworth Wardens, who were 35-5 at one stage but reached 258-6.

But it was Kidderminster’s Shropshire skipper James Ralph who earned the Man of the Match award, as he followed up a valuable wicket with an innings of 99.

Craig Wood’s 78 set Kiddy on their way to victory.
