Table-topping skipper calls for calm

Thursday 18th June 2009, 7:30AM BST.

cricket2Wombourne skipper Liam Hughes is demanding consistency from his title chasing side.

They sit second in the Second Division and are preparing to host Old Elizabethans with an an unchanged line-up on Saturday, following their eight-wicket win over Tamworth last weekend.

With leaders Brockhampton in their sights, Hughes knows they need to maintain the winning habit at the weekend.

He said: “We’ve put a couple of wins together now and, if we want to carry on, then we’ve got to string four or five together.

“If you want to get to the top then you have to get some big wins together.”

Hughes hit a quickfire 26 against Tamworth, where Wombourne easily topped their opponent’s 140 for the loss of just two wickets.

Karl Quiney stuck an impressive 78 but Hughes has warned the side they can’t rest on their laurels.

He said: “A couple of times we’ve been beaten pretty badly this year so we know it can happen anytime.”

Penn will be aiming to build on their winning draw against Evesham when they face Cannock.

Fordhouses are staying tight-lipped on their Third Division chances ahead of their trip to Olton & W.W.

They bowled Moseley Ashfield out for 142 before making 145-3 on Saturday, as Rashid Riaza plundered 72 not out and Jatin Kohli took 4-35.

But skipper Russell Thompson is opting against any predictions.

He said: “We’ve got to play three of the top four teams in the next few weeks so we’ll see how we stand after that.

“We know Olton are going to be a tough side. They are maybe one of the favourites to win the division, but we’ll go there confident.”
