Jones eyes lifeline in new fixtures
Thursday 18th June 2009, 10:14AM BST.
Midfielder David Jones believes Wolves can turn their low-key start to the season to their advantage by earning an early survival lifeline.
The Premier League new-boys don’t meet a ‘big four’ side until November 7 when they play Arsenal, some 12 games into the campaign.
Jones said: “Every game will be tough but I think we’ve been handed a good start and I think there’s points there for us early doors.
“If we can pick up points at the start, that will give us a good platform to push on from and the confidence to believe we can survive.”
The 24-year-old also believes Wolves have been handed a helping hand at the end of the campaign.
After the return against Arsenal on April 3, Wolves finish with five games against teams many believe will be battling alongside them to avoid the drop – Stoke, Fulham, Blackburn, Portsmouth and Sunderland.
He said: “The fixtures have fallen nicely for us, even at the end of the season.
“You would expect that these teams are going to be the ones we’re battling against.
“Hopefully we will be in a position where these games will not matter as much, but we know it will be difficult.
“Outside the top six or eight teams you don’t know who is going to finish where, because it’s normally so tight.”
