Albion blog: Manager Wanted

Thursday 18th June 2009, 9:42AM BST.

curbsAlbion blogger Jarrod Hill gives the fan reaction to Tony Mowbray’s departure and his thoughts on who should replace the manager at the helm.

The last three months have left me feeling pretty low, but at the moment I feel more worried than disappointed.

With our manager Tony Mowbray’s move being confirmed to Celtic this week, we now wait to see what further implications it will have on our summer of change.

The biggest issue for me is how this will impact on key player’s decisions on whether they see their futures at the Hawthorns.

I am sure Tony is now regretting his end of season statement, his rallying call of players owing the club and its fans, urging them to stay and help us get back up.

If it wasn’t so important it would be laughable. More disappointing, it has only served to reconfirm most fans feeling that the only loyalty in football comes from the people who pay their hard earned money week in and week out to support their team.

The optimists amongst you may well point out that this could be the making of us. Mowbray did fail last season no matter how we look at it, but we continued to support him as we had bought into his long term vision for the club.

A number of his signings flopped big style and mistakes were made throughout the season leaving us just short of what was required to survive, when many thought we should have done.

Our next manager will have the basis of a very good Championship squad and, with further funds available, he may well be able to do what no other Albion manager has achieved yet – get us promoted and survive our first season.

Even if we now witness an exodus of players heading for the exit door, we can rest easy in the knowledge that chairman Jeremy Peace is no pussycat when it comes to negotiating out-bound transfer fees.

So the big question is who will be our next manager?

Our aspirations for the near future is to gain promotion, survive in the Premier League and with time, establish ourselves long term in England’s top flight.

In my opinion, we have two ways of looking at who we should target. Either someone we believe can achieve our ambitions, while not having specific experience of both the Championship and Premier League, or someone who has previous experience of achieving our targets.

I would prefer the latter and names that come to mind are Alan Curbishley and Steve Coppell. Both have achieved what we are aiming to do with other clubs of a similar stature and both are available immediately.

My personal choice would be Curbishley, he has vast experience and would not be phased by the turmoil currently surrounding the club.

Whoever we decide to appoint I would urge Jeremy Peace to act quickly, pre-season starts next month and there is much to be done.

But the fact is with assistant boss Mark Venus and first-team coach Peter Grant joining Mowbray at Celtic, the recruitment of a new manager will also involve recruiting a new backroom team.

I would be keen to see reserve team coach Michael Appleton remain at the club and possibly be given greater responsibility within the new regime.

His stock and reputation have risen quickly and I would not be surprised to see him become a successful manager in the future.

How often do you witness a good player who has had his career cut short by injury go on to become a great manager?

Maybe it is due to their continued desire to fulfil their ambition within the game that drives them on, and lets face it Micky boy was never short of passion.

Anyway onwards and upwards, the summer of change has only just begun.

I cannot help but wonder what team will be running out of the tunnel and who will have picked it at the Hawthorns on August 8.

    Jarrod,
I agree with you and my choice would be Curbishley.
A big worry for me seems to be the fact that jeremy peace cannot seem to work with any manager longer than two uyears before he starts to interfere. Would experienced heads like Coppell and Curbishley put up with that? I doubt it. I suppose you cant’t blame TM for going and I think that had we not started next season in top form he would have been fired anyway. So its up to you JP and this is one decision you cannot afford to get wrong.

Mowbray is Albion history so let’s move on and get him off our websites. Agree with Jarrod that Curbs would be a good choice but I would also be happy with Dave Jones or, from the new batch, Darren Ferguson or Paul Ince.

Let’s get the new manager in quick and make some signings, but we all know the Albion and Mr. Peace it will drag on.

    Firstly, let’s recap:

JP not only got rid of Peter Grant (who IMO was the catalyst for our decline) but he also got £2m+ for it!

We’re also now in a position of selling some of the dross to Celtic as Mowbray still thinks they’re decent (Bye bye Valero – for around £4m; bye bye Robbo for another £1.5m).

For me this is one of the best things we could have wished for.

I reckon it’ll be Ferguson Jnr that comes in – with Appy as number 2 or 3. And as long as he brings his 3 gems with him that’ll do me just fine.

I think we need to avoid one of these “experienced” managers. Curbishley has experience of getting promoted, I’ll grant you that. However, it was umpteen years ago and football’s changed since then.

    Same goes for Pardew.

And similar for Coppell – whose team bottled it BIG time last season and he had no solution other than putting untried kids in for their debuts in the playoffs!!!!

I’m gonna be happy with Ferguson or McInnes or the 2 O’s from Donny.

As long as they can build a defence that’s good enough for me with our forward going talent.

Bomber excellent blog again, i think i am with you on getting Curbs in ASAP, my heart keeps saying get McINNES in as i think the fans would love an old boy coming back, but my head keeps saying Curbs as we need some one with a cool head and possibly more experience to come in, he would also attract players and may also be able to reassure the decent players already at the club that the club is still moving in the right direction, my only worry would be him doing well and then heading back to LONDON should a job arise up there. At least with Curbs he plays a similar style to him who has just left, what was his name again?

So come on JP get some one in and lets moving on and focusing on getting back into the Premier with Villa, Blues and Wolves

Once again Jarrod old pal you have hit the nail firmly on the head. When the news first broke of Celtic’s interest I was concerned that T M never came out and distanced himself from the job as Owen Coyle had done. As for loyalty you are dead right. But that is all water under the bridge so lets hope we get Alan Curbishley sooner rather than later and hold on to most of our squad and our 16000+ season ticket holders will show what LOYALTY is all about!!!!

No doubt Peace will get a good price for the players who want out as he is a qaulity businessman and funny how the blame has shifted to mowbray now he has gone when it was his shortcomings all along why you finished bottom of the premier league. Olsson, Morrison, Brunt, Cech and Robinson want out. Replace them with quality championship players and you have a good chance of getting in the play-offs. Fortune and Donk have now vacated. Mulumbu and the argentinian may not now join Mowbray has left. Dont build your hopes too high as there is a huge rebuilding project and I think Coppell, Curbishley or Ferguson would be the best options. The favourite is now Aidy Bothroyd closely followed by Mc Innes.

    Hi Jarrod.
I’m with you. Yes we’ll miss him but sometimes good can come out of bad. Anyway, as we ain’t got a choice we’ve got to make the best of it. I don’t know if you saw an interesting post from ‘Happy’ the other day. Apparently Keane has sacked Simon Hunt at Ipswich and as Happy pointed out, our signings seemed to deteriorate after Simon’s departure. It would be a great bit of business if we could get him back in the fold.

On the manager question, I’m with you on Curbishley for a number of reasons. He would be available without contract wrangles holding things up. He’s a big name and his experience of dealing with players should steady the ship a bit. And he’s a known quantity with a track record at this level, I know it doesn’t guarantee anything but it’s not quite such a gamble.
If we go the up and coming route, young Ferguson would probably be the best bet although it may be a long, messy struggle to get him.

Your point about players leaving, I’d be interested to know who you and others would be most sorry to see go of the likely targets. For me it would be Olssen, Koren, Zuiverloon, Greening, Morrison and Brunt. Although at the end of the day it’s pointless hanging on to unhappy players, let’s just rely on JP to get over the odds for whoever goes.

It’s still Fergie Jnr for me at the moment if we can prise him away from his ‘project’ at Peterborough. Good football, good results and he’s worked miracles at Peterborough.

I am coming round to the idea of Alan Curbishley being the new boss though, and he does tick all of the boxes required doesn’t he?!

In my opinion Steve Coppell looked fed up with football last season and for his sake, I don’t think he should get the job.

Alan Irvine keeps getting mentioned and I think he could do a good job, but he doesn’t have the experience of getting promoted himself, yet has good experience in the Championship and the Prem under Moyes at Everton.

McInnes is the other man being linked with the post frequesntly. Heart strings pull in football (ask TM) but my head suggests that he’s not been challenged anywhere near enough yet to prove himself, so I think it’s too early for him to take the Albion job.

Let’s hope that the right man is found for the job as quickly as possible, but if it takes a bit of time, I don’t mind. I’d rather we get the right man as opposed to a man to do a job.

Turmoil? That’s a bit strong. The next manager has as good a chance as Mowbray to build a challenge for the Championship Title. The names of players being bandied about to leave right now are those which most of us would be happy to leave at the right price. Robinson, Texeira, Valero etc hardly set the world alight last season.

I had an interesting chat with someone on the inside over a pint the other night and apparently the real problem is Jeremy Peace. All managers have had problems and all have come out and said so aprt from Robson who had a clause inserted in his agreement to say that he couldn’t. If this problem is not resolved then progress will be severely restricted no matter who comes in.

My preference is for darren Furguson – liked the way his team plays when we saw them last year – quite similar and so less disruption. Only 7 weeks to go!

Whoever takes over has got a massive job saving the club from further decline.

The Championship this coming season looks harder than its ever been and it will take sometime before the team gels with the manager and its inevitable new, lesser talented signings. Also there are more games to play and the Peace has instructed the squad to be dramatically reduced.

    How the tables turn.

    Well summed up Bomber.

I think its Curbishley or coppell too, and as you say, both are proven keeping teams in the prem. Steve Coppell does remind me of Tony Mowbray (which may or may not be a good thing right now) in that he plays open football with no fear and his teams score lots of goals.

I have already said that whilst TM had the right phylosophy on football – was he the best person to deliver it ??

Curbishley has more prem experience and his teams are more “battling” than Coppell’s – but I can’t forget his comments a few seasons ago when he was linked with our club – we were not big enough for him (he only wanted to manage in the prem).

Now he may have had a point – he kept an unfashionable team at around 10th in the prem every year against all the odds, so maybe he would be the right choice.

Either way – I just hope we get it done ASAP – we need to sort out the existing players and get our targets sorted out NOW.

Good blog again Jarrod. Your paragraph about signings flopped big style is right on. Lets not be dewey eyed over Mobray. The bottom line is that he failed when faced with the real test. £20m was a decent amount to spend and I think we all agree it was spent very badly. It was his team and his tactics and even when it was clear they were not good enough to survive he was incapable (or too stubborn )of changing either. It was so obvious that a holding midfield player was needed and not all the lightweight tippy tappy midfielders on which he spent his budget. And the defenders he bought in largely failed. It is no good his blaming JP. He knew how the club’s finances were handled and the other promoted teams survived on tight budgets. So if players want to leave why worry. They couldnt hack it in the Prem and we know JP will get top dollar for them. If he can move on the failures we will all be happy. There are some good young players coming through the ranks.
So on to the future and we may have to accept that an instant return will not happen especially if we go for an inexperienced manager. My head also says Curbs and maybe Irving (definately not Ince) but on a longer term view I would be happy with Fergie Jnr (good contacts !!) Life is never dull being a Baggie.

Coming around to Curbishley but I think he is too big a name and personality for JP to handle/work with.
Agree he would get respect from the players and attract others to the club.
Darren Ferguson is an unknown quantity for me but he seems to be one of the up and coming managers and maybe we should go with him.
    As for players wanting out?
I think if Curbishley was appointed it would make them think hard before asking to leave however they are all under longish contracts and if the new manager wanted to keep them, JP would make sure they stayed.
As for the numpty who suggests that we let all our decent players go and get in CCC players!!

morning all, great blog bomber, your summer off from blogs looks very unlikely now, at least your not going to be short of content !!
Firstly im gutted, mainly because i brought 100% into T.M.’s visions. Secondly i cant reconcile in my mind whether mowbrays parting shots of unrest are true or just a cop out. For the sake of the club i want to believe they are a copout, and yet this completely falls out of character for T.M, who i believed to be an honest man. I have absolutely no doubts over J.Peace as a business man, and fully recognise that our stability on a financial level is outstanding, however im not convinced of his npeople management, maybe we will never know. I also appreciate that very few managers would regard their chairman as a best friend, so, maybe this is just a traite of modern day football, and if we’d stayed up then maybe these cracks wouldnt have appeared.
Any way onto the future, id have to say that curbishly ticks the boxes but i really doubt we’de get him out of London, Mc Innes is still unproven, but his desire would be second to none, Fergussen hasnt yet managed at championship level, let alone premiership, and for me Jones and Ince are definate non starters. If roy Keane wasnt employed he would have been my shout, but i think we are likely to end up with Irvine and to be very honest that doesnt inspire me at all. I did read on News Now that Peace is looking abroad, so we might not even have the full list of candidates yet, who knows.
In many ways this is going to be a very worrying close/pre season, and the excitement that i was feeling towards the friendlie and august 8th kick off are at best a long way from my mind, we must move quickly and positivly, and yet we all know that this is one of Peace’s weaker points.
I’m just sittin here with fingers crossed and waiting to see.

I’m not at all sure about bringing in an experienced manager such as Coppell or Curbishley. Yes they have done it before, but I think we need someone who would see the Albion as a step upwards and not just another job. That was the case with Mowbray and I suspect JP will go for somebody similar this time, so Fergie, McInnes, Irvine will probably all be in the frame as well as one or two surprises -after all, Mowbray wasn’t exactly well known when we took him on.

Other chairman could have sacked Mowbray and co for failing last season – instead Peace not only has effectively sold Mowbray he held out for what he is worth and if we sell Robbo and Valero who for me were substandard last season then the new manager has cash and not the problem of disinterested players in the dressing room. Glass is half full today!
On the manager choice I would expect anyone interested to be making an approach to JP except those under contract. I also think Coppell whilst a good manager did look utterly dissillusioned at the end of the season. He is a liability in that sense. If JP could reinvigorate his love of the challenge of managing a football team I would think he is a good bet. Fergie is the best of the young emerging managers, but a risk. But whoever we get needs to shore up at the back and get Ismael Miller up and running if we are to stand a chance in an ever increasingly difficult championship.
The only poor choice would be McInnes – head must rule heart and however much we love Derek, he has not proved a thing in management yet. Even Darren Ferguson getting Peterborough promoted is of higher standing than winning Scottish First division.

Spot on blog – I am more concerned about the potential upheaval we could have if this is sorted within a couple of weeks. Coppell & Curbs are both out of work, could start right away and for me tick the boxes of what is required. Dave Jones, McInnes and Fergie will take a bit more time (especially if JP has to negotiate compensation). Thne new manager has to be in place before the players report back for pre-season. Then we can worry about who wants to leave and who doesn’t. Frankly, the players could hardly argue with any justification that the new Celtic manager has been more successful than Coppell or Curbs, because he hasn’t. With it being silly season and nothing for the media to report, I would suggest (to use a phrase) that there is probably a lot less problems than the media are making out. Although, I do hope the story about Robbo leaving IS true.

No point dwelling on the past any longer, we can’t change yesterday, we’ve a big season ahead, so time to move on.

For experience, I quite like the concept of Steve Coppell.

That said, I can remember a certain Johnny Giles, who once taught the Baggies how to pass the ball, in a way, not unlike TM has done.

When JG departed, he was replaced by a less well known, quite inexperienced young manager, from a certain part of East Anglia.

But I think that either McInnes or Ferguson are the one’s that would be on my particular short-list!

Sean Odriscoll from Doncastor should be considered he has done a good job there and plays good football more success and more experience than Fergueson and a quiet bloke might get on with Peace

I just hope it’s not BOOTHROYD Ex Watford, my choice would be Ossie Ardillies + paul Ince to keep the open football flowing. Other choice RAUD GULLITT again this former dutch player and manager
other managers would have David O Leary, Curbs

They tell me Bobby Gould is looking for work…eh ? But seriously, there aint a lot of attractive candidates. Curbishley would be a good choice as I think would be either McInnes or Freguson Jnr. All the other names, Coyle, Ince, Shearer, Boothroyd, Royle, Dave Jones dont set the pulses racing, although I have a sneaky feeling that Sherear would love the WBA job and would grab it, were he offered it. My problem is that with the new season around the corner we are in a very poor situation. Mowbray leaving will have unsettled all the players and I’m sure several, who enjoyed playing the Mowbray way, will not fancy hanging around and ‘toughing’ it out in the League of Death where anyone of 14 clubs could easily win the title. Its a very tough call for JP and I for one dont fancy his task, but if he has appled for it, then Curbishley has to be on the short list ( get it..short list, he’s only knee high to a duck ! ) Pip Pip !
