What happened to loyalty?
Saturday 13th June 2009, 4:03PM BST.
West Brom blogger Jarrod Hill reflects on manager Tony Mowbray’s likely departure to Celtic.
The most disappointing thing about the news that Albion have accepted a compensation deal for Tony Mowbray to join Celtic is that there is now going to be a summer of uncertainty.
I am worried about there being an exodus of players.
I am disappointed that at the end of the season Mowbray said the players owed it to the fans and the club to stay.
It now seems this rule doesn’t apply to him as the manager.
A lot of Albion fans thought that Tony Mowbray was a rarity in modern football by being a man of integrity and his word.
It turns out he is the same as everyone else in going to go for the bigger deal.
Offers like the Celtic job do not come along very often but it is disappointing for us.
He brought a brand of football that everyone wanted to turn up and watch.
We have been relegated from the Premier League and yet we have sold loads of season tickets because he came with an idea that everyone bought into.
We all bought into his ideology of football so now what? We have got to start all over again.
In his second season he got us to the FA Cup semi-final and then promotion as champions but he made some mistakes going into the Premier League season.
And yet he must be the only manager to get a club relegated in bottom place and still have the vast majority of fans behind him.
It would have been very easy for the fans to turn on him yet they did not.
If he does go, there will be an over reaction but the fact is that players and manager can come and go.
The only thing that remains constant is the fans. We have got an absolutely fantastic fanbase.
Looking ahead, I would prefer us to go to somebody like Alan Curbishley but he always seems to be London-based.
In the same mould as Mowbray is possibly Derek McInnes.
We will have to see what the club does next.

He might have bought pretty football to the Hawthorns, but i for one would have prefered it if he had played for the points rather than stick by his so called principals of open go for it football, lets face it, a few more points and we wouldn’t be a relegated side now and with that, probably not looking for a new manager.
i do not blame tm for going and wish him luck,he should not have asked for the players loyalty and am sure he regrets this,as you say there will be an over reaction ,a strong proven manager is required not a young up and coming some one who the players respect, copell, coyle,or give a young manager time ferguson, mcinnes,or bergkamp the debate will go on but good luck tony thank you ffor what you have done !!

Who amongst us would turn up the same opprotunity to go to a top ten in the world club? If a hamburger cook at McDonalds was given the chance to be a chef at a top hotel due to his real skills, skills he isn’t being given the opportunity to display, should he stay loyal to McDonalds and turn it down? I think there is coffee on in your home. Wake up and take sniff.

And so the Mowbray to Celtic saga appears, with the club now having given permission for Celtic to speak to Mowbray, to be coming to an end.
As a WBAFC season ticket holder and a big Mowbray fan maybe he will surprise me and turn down the Celtic job and stay to complete his quote “work in progress” unquote at the Albion – oops sorry I think I just saw a pig fly past – fact is he will take the money and all the talk of integrity, loyalty, etc. will fall at the wayside.
So lets get the deal over and done, Celtic can had him his 30 pieces of silver to put alongside his loyalty and integrity and the Albion can move on.
Boing boing baggies forever

I really cannot see Curbishley coming to the Albion. I for one wouldn’t want him anyway. It has to be McInnes in my opinion. He knows what it takes to get out of this league, he’s young passionate, fits the bill perfectly. Might be a blessing in disguise. Get Bob Taylor involved too.
I’d want Alan Curbishley. Proven good record in the Championship and Premiership. Charlton are a similar club to us, and he didn’t spend big there, and look where he took them, and more importantly, look where they are now!!!
Don’t forget Tony took us down, and spent quite a lot of money, so yes, the football was good, but it didn’t keep us up!!

I think the reality bug will one day bite the stubborn in the English Leagues. If you were flipping burgers at McDonalds and had a chance to be a chef at a top hotel, you would kill for the chance. Even if McDonalds gave you your first chance on a grill. Tony Mowbray is too good for what is really a second division in England. Call it what you want, it is the second division. There are three teams in England. The rest are also rans. Why wouldn’t Tony want to go to a team, officially one of the top ten in the world? Loyalty? Wake up and smell the coffe. What about the clubs loyalty to a man who has too much talent for them?

MMMMMM CARNT YOU GUESS WHATS HAPPEND TO LOYALTY?ITS CALLED HOW MANY OF THE QUEENS FACE WILL IT TAKE TILL YOU ARE LOYAL TO SOMEONE ELSE?WELL ITS TAKEN TONY 2MILL OF THE QUEENS FACE TO GET IT….we got a team there now for a deicent manager who knows how to get the best from players, like luke moore in there beats a good player and this manager who ever it should be could bring it out.lets not rush and lets get someone to take what mowbray has started and carry it on and stick with it..MY SHORT LIST FOR THE MANAGERS JOB….JOL ERRIKSSON,COPPEL,CURBISHLEY,JONES,BOTHROYD,NEWELL,PEARSON,RANRERI,BURLEY,KINEER,..PLAYER MANAGER EVEN BECKHAM WOULD DO,

At least you are not a Watford fan with the manager saying that we were questioning his integrity if we talked about him moving and that he was a “loyal to Watford” only for him to be off to Reading a week later!!
Good Luck next year, but pray that you are not top at Christmas as Watford were two years ago and Reading were last year as it all goes pear shaped after that !!!

Seems as its do as i say not as i do. if his talks with Celtic lead to Tony Mowbray leaving then he aint the man i thought he was,a man of principles, loyalty and a sheer single minded determination to see the job threw. But wait a minute! He did leave Hibs at the drop of a hat! And just how much does Mr Peace have to do with him wanting to go! Smaller squads and all! I wonder. Sad sad times at the Albion.
seems inevitable now doesn’t it?
i’d like to see one of the following:
Darren Ferguson (despite ww connections!!)
Derek McInnes
Steve Coppell
Alan Curbishley
probably end up none of the above above though!!

Great blog Jarrod.
Hit the nail on the head without going over the top. It’s not that any of us are daft enough to expect any sort of loyalty any more, except from someone who has spouted off about little else since his arrival, even to the point of telling the players they should demonstrate it. Very much a man with feet of clay. BFR had all the loyalty of an alley cat but at least he never claimed anything else. Tony Mowbray is the worse kind of hypocrite, preaching to others and then doing his own thing. Even if he were not to go to Celtic now, the fact that he’s spoken to them about the job is a betrayal of his own declared stance. I know you said we shouldn’t go over the top but I’ve rarely felt more let down by anyone.
Hero to way below zero in one easy lesson.
I feel so let down that it’s hard to think about a replacement at the moment. I wonder if it might be a little early for Derek McInnes. Curbishley would be a safe pair of hands. I’d like to throw in what would be a contentious suggestion but what about Glenn Hoddle, a lover of the type of football we’ve gotten used to, who is very much involved in the development and coaching of young players.

Tony Mowbray’s letter to the Celtic fans from years ago says it all.If you go on to Tony Mowbray site and look on the 2nd page you will see it.Its at the bottom of the page.

Loyalty is to yourself first. Tony Mowbray has a golden opprotunity to manage one of the biggest clubs in the world. Who among you would reject such a chance in your own walk of life?

Feel for the WBA Fans,Celtic do know what its like tho as we’ve lost good players and Managers to the Premiership and to the so called ‘Bigger’ Clubs before as well,i dont think Mogga would have left for any other club, he had a special bond here after his wife etc, i would take a gamble on McInnes he has worked wonders with St Johnstone, great young manager with the same style as big Mowbray and by the noises up here has his heart set on the move after an enjoyable spell with WBA as a player, anyway best of luck, keep the faith. Hail Hail.

loyalty?
none, nada, zilch these days.
it will be an interesting few weeks should
TM decide to leave.
my prefered choice would be:-
1. Derek McInnes (with Michael Appleton as second his right hand man)
2. Steve Coppell
3. Darren Ferguson
4. Alan Curbishley
whether any of them will be appointed is anyone’s guess, but if it is one of the above
i’m sure they will do a good job!!

I am disturbed here by the idea that as soon as Celtic meet the asking price, it is assumed that he will depart. Up to yet he has not said ONE WORD as to how he feels about this approach. Regardless of how ‘big’ Celtic appear to be and we all know if Man.U. had come in for him what the answer would be, I can’t relate to the silence. TM must know that if he goes then many players will be disturbed by HIS lack of loyalty. Some will go with him too. The heart ripped out of our club once again, just like 1981 when a certain larger-than-life manager went to Man.U. Discovering that some of our politicians were thieves and rogues left a nasty taste. This could equal or beat it as a let-down. Old age can bring cynicism, but I thought we had something special at Albion. Let’s hope I’m right.

Really dissapointed. The most important thing now is to get another manager in quickly. Darren Ferguson’s name is being chucked around. Hopefully Peace will have been weighing up his options since all the speculation started.
Well I’m absolutely gutted for all the fans who stuck by him when the short sighted fickle others started with the negativity earlier this season… the vast majority have been loyal like you say Jarrod, and shown this particularly over the last few games…. Adopting a different approach, sticking to principles and encouraging loyalty and teamwork… all championed by our leader who appears is now moving on for the lure of £. Let’s not forget that that’s what he did at Hibs too, with their fans wishing him all the best… can’t help thinking that with a long career in front of him tho, another chance to manage Celtic would surely happen at some point. Very frustrated with TM not finishing what he’s started here… but the overwhelming feeling is that of huge dissapointment – that the optimism, loyalty, pride and passion shown towards him during those last couple of games, has been overcome by the £ in this modern game I used to love so much.
Im personally very disappointed, but i dont want someone at the club that wants to be somewhere else. if he wants to go then let him. WBA is the most important thing, getting us back where we belong in the premiership. TM did a great job, im sure with top quality players he could win trophies is the english league. but last season was embrassing and it was a failure. so many individual errors costs us. 4 points more and we would have been safe, TM wouldnt be leaving, to many games we just didnt turn up to the races. so onto the future
Derek Mcinnes my number one choice with Micheal Appleton and i like the sound of getting Super Bob back in the picture.
COME ON YOU BAGGIESSS!!

I have been one of TMs staunchest supporters through our prem season, and like many other fans I have brought into his football ethos. I also have grown to respect and admire him for his personal as well as professional principles – thats why his (possible) jumping ship at the first opportunity hurts so much.
I can’t join the “Judas” contingent because at the end of the day its just his job (it will always mean more to us fans) but I do feel very let down.
TM has a great football philosophy….but has he been the best at delivering it ??? Possibly not.
Therefore, as long as the next guy maintains this style of football – and maybe is better at delivering it, we move on.
Coppel is my choice as he also has integrity – and Reading scored even more goals than us when they went up.
So cheers Tony – its been fun.
Let him just go! what did he do at Albion?
He inherited a solid squad from Bryan Robson already favourites for promotion, went up last season as Champions and came back down and Stoke & Hull were better than us. Did not have the ability to solve the centre half and striker problems!
Just let him go!

wolves fan here i agree with no 1 ,no its not all about money or loyalty its about ambition.
i’m sorry but lets face facts, celtic are one of the biggest clubs in the country with a massive fan base and chance of european football. albion are in the championship err no contest. just move on with the 2 mill in the bank and a good squad. if you pick the right replacement you’ll b back in the prem

As a Wolves fan, I do feel that you are justified in questioning his hypocrisy but not his loyalty.
He should never have said the players owe it to the fans.
At the end of the day he has madea carreer move. And to be honest, it is not all about cash. AS so many have said if he was offered the Celtic Job with Champions League football and kept the same pay, he would take it.
He also has Celtic in his heart and he would find it hard to say no to this offer.

No loyalty. I cant see him stayin now.
If he stays (which I highly doubt) he has a chance 2 become a true legend here at Albion but if he leaves he will leave with a bitter ending with a cloud hanging over the club. When he left Hibs he had took them as far as he could, its not the case here, theres an exciting project and an unfinished job.
But these talks there havin. Its not like a normal job interview where he may or may not get the job. Celtic want him, and he obviously wants the job. The talks will be short, job description: Win this boaring league & the Scottish cup.
19/20 theres some Mowbray masks on E-bay if want em
When does a manager ever have talks with a club then turns the job down??
Do they ever come out & say “you know what, its not for me”
Has it EVER happened would seriously like 2 know??

I find it amazing when people make comparisons between a “McDonalds employee being offered a better job – who wouldnt move?” scenario. Then think they are up there with oscar wilde.
This situation is obviously very different. TM is being paid very well by WBA and rightly so. However, in no job does an employee have 27,000 people’s emotions in his hands. Football is different to any other profession I can think of.
I for one invested in TM’s approach and five year plan – thats why I appluaded him even after some shocking transfer errors this year. I was happy to give him another year.

Good ridance, he only wanted to use wba as a stepping stone. 70% OF THE PLAYERS HE SIGNED WERE DROSS, I hope he take the likes of Bolero(yes a big girls blouse), Beattie, Kim Donk,Moore AND ALL OF THE OTHER SUBSTANDARD PLAYERS HE SIGNED WITH HIM. He is tactically useless. He will not last 2 seasons at Celtic.

Not often I disagree with you two but I’m afraid I can’t forgive and forget so easily. I don’t expect loyalty from a manager, especially one that has no history with the club, except when that manager has been ramming his honour, integrity and morals down our throats since he arrived here. As soon as I read that he had expressed a desire to speak to Celtic about the job, I’d had enough. Like many others I brought into this man’s football philosophy and like yourselves I’ve defended him after many a dire performance, but more important I loved his sense of honour. Something as rare as rocking horse s**t in the modern game. Well I’ll carry on looking behind the rocking horse. I just feel very let down. To be honest, I feel I’ve been taken for a mug by a very slick con man.
To all the Celtic fans on here. Don’t trust this man. As soon as a big club comes in, he’ll be off.
As for a new manager, please not Aidy Boothroyd, although some on here would love the ‘up and under’ style.
If TM does go he will become one of the biggest hypocrites to ever have managed a football club. After relegation was confirmed against Liverpool how many managers would have received a standing ovation from the fans?. TM then states that he hopes that the players realise what they owe the fans & that they should all stay and get promotion back to the premiership so that these fans are repaid for their support. If he himself then leaves for personal gain he would show himself to be a man with no principals at all & a complete hypocrite to boot. If he does go I don’t think that the Celtic fans will be as forgiving if he isn’t successful next season. Lets face it, finishing second in the SPL would be viewed as a failure, think on Tony!.

Good point about not letting the best players leave. I think this is where the appointment of a new manager is so important. We need someone who will sell the dream to them and then deliver it. Who’d be in Jeremy Peace’s shoes?

Before the blame Peace saga begins I think supporters should look at the amount of money that was made available to Mowbray much of which was wasted on players who were not good enough. To spend £4.75 M on Valero was a big mistake , good though he may turn out to be. The team were crying out for class defenders not another midfield player. TM is a good man and his team played good football but considering the players at his disposal and the money made available to him results were dissapointing. There’s a manager up the road who would love similar cash made available to him. I somehow think we may see Kevin Phillips back at the Albion alongside Derek McIness.

At this time we are all second guessing the outcome of the talks between TM and the Celtic board, and it will not be a eureka moment, if he indeed goes north.
Managers come and go, it`s a fact of life, and if TM decides his future lies in the SPL then i would like to thank him for re-introducing the beautiful game to the shrine.
However i would be lying if i said that his Churchillian speech about loyalty, post Liverpool game will not leave a slightly bitter taste. Hollow words, and i guess he now regrets saying them.
Anyway, often things happen that turn out to be the “every cloud has a silver lining” scenario, and what is to say this will not be one of those cases.
I know it is only press heresay, but Aidy Bothroyd, nice guy that he is, is not of the “silver lining” material that we hope for, and him being touted as favourite to take over is purely (i hope) wild speculation.

Have to say I am worried. Next season could be a disaster if we don’t bring in the right manager. Players are going to leave whatever Jeremy Peace says as the squad have bought into the ‘Mowbray Way’ and are going to be unsettled when he eventually goes. I’ve never been a great Mowbray fan! For as much as I respect the opinions those who have revelled in his so called beautiful football, I have sat through so many of our games wishing for a little more fortitude in the midfield and defence and would have gladly sacrificed a few slick passes to get it. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t want us to go back to the Megson negativity of old, but I wouldn’t mind being somewhere between the two schools of management. I guess the devil is in the detail as far as management is concerned. Couple this with having a chairman like Peace who is quite capable of falling out with himself if he is left alone long enough and you are left with a very difficult position to fill now that Mowbrays exit looks assured. For me Roberto Di Matteo is worth a shout if Martin Jol isn’t interested!

Aidy Bothroyd is now the favourite. Very interesting. I would of thought Steve Coppell or Alan Curbishley or even Paul Jewell would be above in the pecking order. It seems like alot of players now want to jump ship which is a great shame. If they dont want to play for the albion put them in the reserves until your valuation is met. A year in football can change so much, Wolves have signed their tenth full international today. I wish the albion well but somebody has a major rebuilding job on their hands and lets hope you can get up within 2 years or major cut backs will be required.

As a Wolves supporter – I feel a lot for you at WBA the support you gave the Team and TM all last season was fantastic. But when these other Clubs come calling – so what for loyalty ? Agree with many of the comments – he will have an easier time in the Scottish Prem than he would have done in the Championship. But look forward a change will do you the world of good – we had to change 3 seasons ago and it happened. However it could be that our Bloke might receive an offer he can’t refuse. if Norwich and Southampton where in the SPL then they would finish 1st and 2nd and they where relagated from the Championship. Yes I can see why he has/is going (something to do with queens heads on paper)but really as far as a challenge goes it’s a backwards step

I think the best man for the Albion manager’s job is Tony Mowbray.
Until there’s an official announcement he’s leaving I will continue to assume he’s staying – Celtic now have permission to approach him but that doesn’t mean he’s going to say yes.
Yes, possibly I am hopelessly naive but it’s not official yet. Half the papers were assuming last week that JP would have to reduce the 2.2 million fee but he didn’t.

Well stated 41. Why has Tony Mowbrays head been turned ?. Simple Jeremy “I AM THE MAN” Peace. It appears that the relationship has been soured beyond repair down to the fact that our meglamniac chairman wants to interfere yet again in the playing side. So TM has made mistakes and spent unwisely on some players. But then haven’t a lot of clubs. (Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Wolves, Villa etc). Let us not forget that Alex Fergusson was with within 2 matches of getting the sack, but the board backed him and believed in his vision. Mr Peace is too intent on being the Big I Am. His stubbornness to find a sponser for last season, saying he wasn’t going to sell the club short was beyond belief, his vision to put the club on the market, but only for 2 months, because of the economic climate he was afraid he would be undervalued. Mr Peace do us all a favour and get out of our beloved club now, before you drag us back down to the depths of despair that we hoped we would never see again.

He’s a respected coach.
Minus points.
Not currently involved in club football.
Was unsuccessful at Wolves (nothing very unusual there.)
I think he turned us down once before but things have changed since then.
That’s my reasons for suggesting him. How about some from you for ridiculing the suggestion.

66 Colley Gate.
You have every right to your point of view on Jeremy Peace but telling him to get out doesn’t really wash, unless you have a viable alternative. Have you? The silence is almost as deafening as Tony Mowbray on a point of principle.

To all Baggies,
You are the club, not the chairman, not the players, not the manager. You were magnificent last year in the Prem and you will be next year as well. I just hope we can cross swords again in the Prem next year. Mowbray can dream of your passion when he’s in front of a couple of thousand at away games.
Keep the faith and please come straight back.

After all the speculation, what a shock if tony turned it down,he would be a hero and bigger support than any manager could wish for .If only!Best of luck Tony,it was good while it lasted ,but december just about finished it.

Kev in Mallorca and Colley Gate, what utter bilge. It’s TM who wants to go back to a club that he loves, a club that was incredibly supportive when his first wife died, a club that plays in the Champions League, a club where he can pretty much guarantee winning three weeks in every four, a club where he is idolised by a large number of the 50,000+ season ticket holders. As for Thompson being a legend… the man who couldn’t stand up to Megson, then decided that he loved Southampton instead. Peace is West Brom through and through – a canny Black Country lad with an eye for a deal – not some flash jack who lives on the never-never.

Looks like he’s going without even sayin a word, no explanation, just leavin us in the lurch! Afraid 2 make a statement and afraid he will sound hypocritical, maybe?? We dont deserve this after we gave him our complete backing. I have always been a mega Mowbray fan but the way this is all happening is wrong
