Lotus Elise

Anyone looking for sporting greatness on a budget, a B-road king or a track day star might want to check out the Lotus Elise.

The second generation car was introduced in 2002, in a number of different configurations based on power output and equipment levels.

The level of standard kit was minimal, but there were options to personalise cabin and wheels and upgrade performance.

Engines

The Elise is synonymous with the recently departed Rover and its popular K series unit. In 1.8-litre form the engine has proven to be a flexible unit, with power ranging from just over 100 to just over 200bhp depending on the variant chosen.

And even in base trim it’s a potent lump.

Exterior

With more detail than the original Elise, this second-generation vehicle looks like the mature car it is. The rakish details are well judged – while the Elise looks good with the roof down, it’s not bad with it up.

Interior

The Elise’s minimalist cabin hasn’t changed much over the years, although the extra cost trim packages and the ability choose an audio unit all help personalise the cabin.

It’s a snug environment but a comfortable one. Don’t expect too much in the way of storage space or soundproofing, though.

Driving

What’s there to say that’s not already been said about this lightweight, mid-engined and rear-wheel drive car?

Keen enthusiasts will love the car’s precise handling and steering, while the engine options allow you to finely tune choice to your available budget.

Ownership

You’ll need to be dedicated if the Elise will be your only car. It’s not a long distance cruiser and storage space is limited, but if you plan your journeys, it won’t be too bad.

You’ll need to be an agile person regarding accessing the cabin, and don’t expect insurance to be a bargain if you’re young.

What To Look For

Cracks in the bodywork, rough sounding engines, flaky brakes and a generally tired feeling could mean a hard life.

A service history is essential, along with a thorough test as a way of sniffing out evidence of bodged crash damage repairs and general neglect.
