Edwards refuses to make way
Tuesday 9th June 2009, 10:07AM BST.
Wolves midfielder David Edwards insists he is not about to be muscled out of a Premier League career by the raft of new signings the club are planning this summer.
The 23-year-old midfielder, goalscoring hero of a Wales victory in Azerbaijan at the weekend, is now enjoying a well-earned break before reporting back for club duties next month.
Edwards knows the challenge of holding a first team place is about to get even tougher, with Wolves working on at least six new signings to strengthen the squad for the top-flight challenge.
But the all-action midfielder is used to competition now and, with his international success adding to his confidence, is ready to meet it head on.
He said: “I think it’s been this way almost throughout my career – that I’ve not been in the starting line-up at the start of a season from the time I set out at Shrewsbury.
“Often new signings come in during the summer and are given the chance to show what they can do. From there, it’s a case of battling your way through and into the team.
“I’ve become used to it in recent years, and if it happens again next season it’s just another challenge which I would be looking forward to.
“But experiences with Wales have already included coming up against quality players from countries like Germany and Holland, which should hopefully help me going into the Premier League.
“I know just how hard it’s going to be just to win a place in the team but I’m ready for that challenge.”
Edwards’ Welsh heroics continued a good 2009 for the hard-running midfielder, who is also credited with making a vital impact over the final phase of Wolves’ championship triumph.
Although he is now looking forward to some ‘r and r’, the excitement of what is around the corner is ever-present.
He said: “It will be nice to have a short break now, but I am really looking forward to coming back.
“To think about playing at grounds like Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge is what dreams are made of.”
“It’s the best league in the world, and for any player to look back in 20 years time and say they’ve played in that league is certainly something to be proud of.”
