Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Shearer linked as new Albion boss
Monday 8th June 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Alan Shearer has been sensationally linked to the job of becoming the next Albion manager.
The Newcastle legend, currently locked in negotiations at his home club, has found his name linked to a Hawthorns vacancy which does not yet exist amid the raging speculation about the future of current Baggies boss Tony Mowbray.
Although the Shearer link to Albion is not without a measure of credence, it is being driven more by the difficulties the England legend is facing in thrashing out the terms he is seeking to stay on as Newcastle boss, following their relegation from the Premier League.
It is Mowbray’s future which will be of more concern to the Baggies faithful, who have listened to increasingly insistent reports from Scotland for the past week that their popular 45-year-old boss is destined for the Celtic job.
The Scottish media continue to write about the prospect as a ‘given’ – but Albion repeat there had still been no approach from Parkhead for permission to speak to Mowbray.
Celtic’s lionised former captain is understood to have been identified as the man the board want, after a meeting of directors on Friday night decided against Motherwell boss Mark McGhee and Burnley manager Owen Coyle as potential successors to Gordon Strachan.
Mowbray has been on a family holiday in Devon while his name has been at the centre of a media firestorm but, with Albion chairman Jeremy Peace due back at his desk today, the drama is set for its decisive episode.
Albion have no interest in releasing Mowbray and can be expected to play ‘hard ball,’ especially as the club’s mood has been riled by the certainty of the reports that their manager has been as good as snaffled.
The Baggies are also ridiculing claims they have already drawn up a shortlist of potential successors, which is why the Shearer scenario is also being dismissed by club sources.
He has been in talks with Newcastle about continuing the job he started at the back end of last season.
The former England captain was appointed on a short-term basis but was unable to stop the club being relegated.

Yes I read this in yesterdays rags, could not stop laughing what a load of rubbish.
The names being banded about for a job that is not even availabale(yet!)is getting out of hand.
I would prefer our very own Sir Terry rather than shearer
Report abuse
if mowbray must go, which i dont think he should, why would we want alan “mr personality” shearer? strachen would be a much better, more experienced candidate. shearer should stay up north and watch the toon get relegated again.

What a season….. One of if’s, but’s & maybe’s..
Still on target I feel for the 5 year plan that the board has in place….
Manager & players in demand. A good sign but one I trust we can mainly fend off. Sometimes though you have to put good business sence over pride (Old saying pride comes before a fall!!)
Whatever happens, WBA are the best club in the midlands form a “bankers” point of view. WBA will Boing Boing straight back to the Prem & hopefully with TM in charge. Next 48 hours critical & decisive.
Stay with the boys & they will repay…
COME ON YOU BAGGIES !!!!
Don’t want him done nothing as a manager. Curbs would be the one to take over. But would like Mowbary to stay Boing Boing
Report abuse
given our cagey relation with the media i have no other choice but to disavow such a story until word comes from Peace. I think TM is gone though, good luck to him.
SHEARER NO THANKS, ITS GOT TO BE DAVE JONES OR A CURBISHLY AFTER TM HAS GONE AND I JUST WANT HIM TO GO NOW I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THE LITTLE BOYS LEAGUE STUFF IN SCOTLAND HE JUST COULD NOT HANDLE THE 2 BIG LEAGUES !!
yes please

The club has no ambition !
Next season will be an ‘also ran’ because when our better player start being sold off, the rest will struggle ! Simple as !
Bring back Ossie !

Ignoring the obvious fact that we don’t have a managerial vacancy at present……what a load of absolute nonsense.
Shearer has no credentials whatsoever as a manager. Personally I hope he does stick with Newcastle as it will rule them out of the promotion race next season. Top players very very rarely make good managers.
If TM does does go and I hope he don’t, then Shearer is not the guy for the job. 8 games in charge don’t make him a managerial expert. Curbishly is the guy I would like as TM’s replacement followed by Coppell. Fergusson Jr would be the outsider with Fergusson Snr as his No2.
sign him up
Report abuse
A big name but with no track record.
Can’t see Peace taking a gamble when we play if safe in every other sense.
Darren Fergusson, Derek McInnes are better contenders but not managed at this level.
Strachan, Curbishley have experience and a decent track record.
Can’t agree more woth Paul #4. If Mowbray goes and it looks increasibngly like he will, then Curbs with his Charlton experience – a similiar size club that punched above its weight for years in the Prem is my choice. He also has a reputation that our so called want away stars might want to play for. Go get him JP!!
Shearer claim is not more than a bargining chip to put pressure on the Newcastle board.

No 1 Crowds not good enough
No 2 No Sponsor to offer income.
Just face it your just a small club in SANDWELL!

Mowbrays not even gone yet!!!!
Although I think he will, even after all the preaching he did to the players that they owe the fans another year!
I can’t say I’ll be sorry to see him go in truth.
We would only be going backwards with Shearer, hardly any management experience, we don’t want names we want a decent mangager should Mowbray turn his back on us!

Shearer for manager
Report abuse
The papers must really be struggling for stories if this is all they can do. Why the hell would we want Shearer? and even if we did, why the hell would he accept? Newcastle had to practically break his arm to become manager after he refuted his future in management regularly on MOTD – and that was his life long, boy-hood hero club. I doubt he will manage again after Newcastle, by his own admission, his loyalty to the Toon and the fact that it would appear he really doesn’t have a managerial clue. Another substanceless summertime rumour rolling around the mill.

i think owen coyle is still in the frame my reason for this west brom claim to have had no contact with celtic . but when you read scotish papers on line its full of mowbray new celtic boss i think they are trying to push coyle into a decision .
We seem to suffer more than most clubs ie long
protracted transfer dealings we get a good manager
Atkinson Ardiles and now Mowbray prised away.
If reports are true Celtic are behaving extremely
badly. They wouldnt pay adequate compensation to
others and expect us to cave in. I am with JP
on this and can see him being very tough with
the jocks the only problem is if they lose interest were left with a very unhappy manager.
If he does go how about Ardiles ???

If we’re “just a small club” what does that make your lot, eh?
(Can you hear that? Shhhhhhhh.)

How about Glenn Hoddle. He like Mowbray is faithful to the club. He plays lovely attractive football.
Perfect fit.

I’d rather we had a Manager, he was a brilliant striker, but has less of a clue about football management than my 1 year old niece does.
If he goes his mythical man of principle crwon will have slipped somewhat. Especially given the give us one more year plea to the playres. I would go for Fergy Jnr or Curbishley. Strachan????? I don’t think so and Dave Jones would carry too much baggage from his Wolves connections. Curbs needs a job, has a decent track record with Charlton and was unfortunate to lose his job at West Ham due to internal politics.
Bobby B
We’ve sold as many season tickets as you, in a lower division. If you wanna stay up next year, your balance sheet won’t make pretty reading by the end of it. Our books almost balance (£8m debt I think) which is why Burfmeister correctly points out, we’re in a healthy financial state compared to most.
Am reaching Sir Terry’s level of frustration, I just wish someone would make a statement, I’m losing my marbles.
If he goes (desperately hope not, looking increasingly likely), then Curbishley has the best CV available, would people take to his football?
Ossie was entertaining but certainly no tactical genius, we were lucky to get promoted under his stewardship last time around (finsihing a long way behind Port Vale in 3rd), he’d almost certainly get found out this….the next appointment could be vital to the club’s future.
One word for Shearer – NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
No experience and possibly expensive too. He wouldn’t want another job in the same league as Newcastle anyway – not with the comfort of the MOTD sofa a phone call away.
IF Mowbray leaves then I would like to See Ferguson or Ince be given a chance. Curbs is a miserable sod and Dave Jones (apart from his Wolves connections) is a bottler as Cardiff and our old orange rivals will tell us.
Although Ince failed at Blackburn the players just never wanted him. I think he will come good whenever he goes back into football.
If Mowbray does go then serious questions need to be asked about JP because he really shouldn’t be losing TM to Celtic, and we should have a shirt sponsor. If Crewe, Hereford and Cheltenham can find a sponsor then we should. It’s not just about hte money coming in but also about hte perception other clubs and players have of us. I know it doesn’t appear on the balance sheet as a tangible asset but reputation still counts in your favour if it is perceived to be good. It is often the difference between signing a player and not. Another summer of missed opportunities becons and in fairness there can be only one person to blame for that. JP has done well but it’s time to move on. If Pompey can find a buyer we should be able to as well.

Thanks TM for keeping quiet, your silence has told us where you are going..

Why Dave Jones, his teams have bottled it twice end of season games???..

The team was built by Mowbray to play his way.He asked the players to be loyal and stay with the club.He also said managing in Scotland was like managing inside a bake bean tin.If he did go he would lose all the credability and character as a man and manager. So i hope he stays and proves he’s the man he portrays and the man i think he is.

I would take shearer being as TM has abbandoned us after his lovely loyality speech that apparantly doesnt apply to him. Big al will get big name players in and TM refuses to defend so he will not be succesful at a big club like celtic. I can only pray that for celtics sake they do NOT get barcelona in the champs league otherwise id hate to be arthur boruc(celtic goalkeeper) Cmon JP sort it out son.

34. Tomo lost credibility and and character halfway through last season when they were taking the mick out of him on sky sports and match of the day as he kept commenting on how many passes you completed but kept losing.
Some of the albion fans have already said ‘were be straight back up’ like this time last year ‘staying up the mowbray way’. Go and get Steve Coppell and let him re-build the club whilst you still have the parachute payments although the bookies are saying Les Reed (ex charlton) is the favourite to take over if mowbray leaves?

There is just ONE thing that most people seem to have missed.
Any new manager coming in will have to fit around Jeremy Peace.
He insists on total control and will not employ anyone who will stand up to him.
People like Shearer and especially Strachan are quite abrasive characters and there would be instant friction with JP as they would want to manage things their way. Can you imagine those two finding out through the media that they had to cut staff from 30 to 20 for the new season.
No.
JP will get someone in who won’t stand up to him.
Give me some names!
It was Tony who? a few years ago.

Get real!! Tony couldn’t lace Gordon Strachen’s or Martin O’Neill’s boots, never mind manage one of Europe’s top clubs. (The 1st. Britsh team to win the European Cup, European Cup finalist TWICE AND Eufa Cup finalist), not forgetting that Celtic Football Club, (present capacity 60,800), and likely to increase in the near future), are the ONLY team in the WORLD to win both the Eufa AND Fifa Fair play awards for their wonderful fans in the SAME season (2004). It must be the wee drams talking.
You are only trying to convince yourself!!
Your 61000 are in a minority.
There are millions who in all honesty would say Barcelona, Man. Uand a few others are WAY ahead of Celtic.
That must be why Moyes and a few others don’t see your club as a great career move or challenge.
Scottish football generally is Pants – apart from say the top 4 or 5 clubs in the SPL.
No challenge really!
You are welcome to TM if he wants to come.
Question is….CAN YOU AFFORD HIM at 2 million.
Too much eh????

Come on Baggies, surely you dont really believe your a bigger club than Wolves. Your actually making yourselves look foolish now. If you ever go outside the W.Mids and ask any neutral who is a bigger club I promise you they will all say its the mighty Wolves. We have more supporters clubs abroad than any other english club bar 5. That’s why we are always referred to as a big club by the pundits. Brazil and Parry are always going on about it. Seriously, has anyone ever called Albion a big club? Now stop all this nonsense as until now most Wolves fans sympathise with your plight.

To all you dingles out there at least we don’t sell our seats for a pie & a pint. What a joke you all are former wolverhampton city council ground now an asda car park and a stadium thats a custard bowl enough said. Have the dingles forgot that they sold their seats for a pie and a pint and also that their ground was owned by Wolverhampton Council and is now a supermarket car park. As for the biggest club in the Midlands I think that some Villa fans will disagree with that. They will soon be calling for Mick’s head when they keep loosing week after week thats the sort of muppets they are.

Setanta are in deep trouble. Celtic may get a difficult Champions league qualifier.
As an Englishman who may well get Albion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking and who would want to be successful in his own country, Celtic is a step in the wrong direction I feel. Champions league apart there are 4 big games a season, possibly 2 cup finals. His achievements in winning the Championship and reaching a cup semi in England drawf any domestic issue north of the border. If he goes to Celtic for 4 years where will he go after. The big four still wont look at him and the best he could be offered is perhaps a Spurs or a Villa sized club (and YES to the Villa posters on here – there is a big club). In 4 more years at West Brom he can do no worse and will be week in week out pitting his wits against better opposition excepting perhaps some champions league teams.
As for attendance and money, the championship is the fourth most watched league in Europe and the money from Sky eclipses the SPL completely.
If he moves good luck – because it will be a hell of a gamble – one which he may regret.
Don’t forget he has well and truely won the fans over over his time here and we have enjoyed the football we have seen him try to play. Better the devil you know Tony.
It’s simple – STAY!
