Scragg set for Civic world title fight
Saturday 6th June 2009, 8:45AM BST.
Lyndsey Scragg is six days from her chance to be crowned a world champion on home soil at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
The hometown girl takes on Agnes Adonga from Uganda for the vacant Global Boxing Council super-featherweight title next Friday night.
It’s the second time the city’s first female professional boxer has had the chance to become the city’s first world champion, after a narrow points defeat for the WBC crown to Jelena Mrdjenovich in the champion’s backyard of Edmonton in Canada last November.
Now it’s Scragg turn to be the fan favourite, and she insists she will not be denied this time.
She said: “This fight has been in the pipeline for a while, so I just want the night to come now. To box for any belt in my hometown and in front of my own people is a dream come true for me.
“So much has improved since Canada that I don’t think I can really go wrong. Unless I make a silly mistake or something like that, his fight will give me – a girl from Wolverhampton – a world title.
“I hope to use this fight as a platform to even bigger things in the future.”
