Marston Road name to be changed
Friday 5th June 2009, 8:15AM BST.
Stafford Rangers are to raffle off the name of their stadium in a bid to raise money for the cash-strapped Blue Square North club.
The right to be known as the Marston Road ground will be up-for-grabs to the lucky winner, who will then pick their own title for the home base to be known as for the entire 2009/10 season.
A ticket costs just £50 and is open to both businesses, residents and fans.
Those who really want the prize can try and stack the odds in their favour – there is no limit to how many tickets that can be bought by one person.
The price of a raffle ticket also ensures free entry into Rangers’ pre-season home friendly against League Two Port Vale on Saturday July 25.
The draw will be made at the ‘Legends’ night at Marston Road on Friday July 3, when past greats of the club will talk about their experiences in a question and answer session.
Entry is £10 for that event, and tickets for both are available by calling the commercial department on 01785 602 431.
So it won’t be Marston Road as we know it next season, but chairman John Downing is confident this initiative will have the right effect.
He said: “What we are looking for is the local community to support us in any way they can, we feel this is a quirky way of doing that.
“We are a 150-year old club and we need to keep the tradition going, the idea was put to the board and we thought ‘why not, if it can help the club financially.’
“It’s another lifeline for the club, we need to generate as much cash to make sure we survive for the forthcoming season.”
