Carew backs Milner for England

6752591John Carew has backed James Milner’s England credentials after suggesting his Villa team-mate is worth more than the £12million Villa paid for him.

Winger Milner, 23, hopes to make his England senior debut in the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan, after Michael Carrick’s withdrawal led to his late call-up from the under-21s.

Villa still have three representatives in Fabio Capello’s squad despite Gareth Barry joining Manchester City this week, with Milner joined by Emile Heskey and Ashley Young in the party.

Norwegian international Carew believes Milner, who became Villa’s club record signing when he joined from Newcastle last August, has proven he belongs in the company of Three Lions internationals.

The striker said: “James has been fantastic for us. He has been one of our best players this season.

“He is right up there with Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley when it comes to importance in the team.

“He has proved he is worth the price tag, maybe even more, not only in the games but in the way he trains.

“He is in the top three in training every day. He never has a bad day. He is always good for us.”

But Young and Milner are both likely to find themselves on the bench.
