Little Civic to close and relocate

Thursday 4th June 2009, 4:00PM BST.

CIVIC 2 GD 09One of Wolverhampton’s most popular music venues is to be relocated after a decade of hosting gigs.

The Little Civic in North Street closes on Sunday.

Rumours of the news had circulated among musicians who regularly play at the venue, which has now been confirmed by Wolverhampton City Council.

The council took over the building 10 years ago when it became the Little Civic.

It opened to provide a box office facility, while the Civic Hall underwent renovation work.

Problems with disabled access have been cited as the reason for the move.

The venue is well-known for helping to launch the careers of many well-known bands, including Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys.

Sarah Campbell, Wolverhampton City Council’s chief cultural services officer, said: “We have known that the lease on the Little Civic building would be expiring for a long time, and have been actively exploring potential sites where we could relocate the venue for more than a year.

City council spokesman Tim Clark added that the council is in negotiations with other venues so could not reveal the new location.

Sunday’s gig will be headlined by Mark Morriss of The Bluetones.

Real shame this, best bar in Wolves, no chav’s and no aggro, just quality music and a chilled atmos’. I always go in there when i’m back in the UK. :0(

It is a shame that the Little Civic is closing, as it’s probably the best venue of it’s size in W’ton and some great bands have played there on their way up…and the way down come to think of it!

The Varsity is pretty much off the map nowadays due to the pub having no interest in making the music venue upstairs worth running, so until the Little Civic relocates (IF a suitable venue is found), where is there for rising talent to play in Wolverhampton?

With the new Barfly recently opened and the new Academy opening soon, Birmingham is going to boast a number of Little Civic sized venues which will probably mean that bands skip Wolverhampton in favour of playing Birmingham, and that will be a real shame.

Who’s going to save the small-venue circuit of Wolverhampton?

Such a shame. A great little venue, with a good crowd. Superb pre Gig ligging place. Hopefully someone will take over the lease and see fit to keep it alive, providing Wolves council keeps up the licence available to the building.Otherwise Wolves will lose another Live music venue where new bands can ply their trade.
