Whalley warning of perils ahead
Tuesday 2nd June 2009, 10:40AM BST.
Chief executive Roy Whalley admits Walsall will have to run an even tighter ship amid the continuing financial troubles in football.
The Saddlers chief executive realises life in League One will be tougher next season and reckons clubs will have to be prudent during pre-season in preparation for 2009/10.
He said: “At the moment we are all operating on sponsorships we conducted last summer when the world seemed a happier place.
“It is not like that now and it is going to be hard work. Where companies are making staff redundant they can’t really be seen to be spending a lot on sponsorship of football.
“It will make it a more difficult scenario.”
Whalley believes the Saddlers have an advantage over their rivals because they were able to sign a two-year sponsorship deal with the NHS last month, which will see Walsall Hospice on the front of the shirts.
He even expects some clubs to fail to find a sponsor.
He said: “To be able to announce a two-year shirt and stand sponsorship deal, is great really and a relief because I suspect a lot of clubs will be struggling to maintain their current level of sponsorship, or even get a sponsor at all.”
But Whalley insists the club’s off-field packages, including match day sponsorship, will help the Saddlers.
He said: “That may give us an advantage over some of the bigger local clubs who may be looking to charge much more.
“I feel we give very good value for money.”

FOR THE RECORD,FOR ANYONE WHO BELEIVED BONSER/WHALLEY 12 MONTHS AGO THERE WAS A BIGGER BUDGET IN PLACE,YOU ARE FOOLS,AND SECONDLY WHOM EVER THOUGHT THAT THIS PIECE OF NEWS WASN’T GOING TO HAPPEN,YOU ARE BIGGER FOOLS,P.S Mr whalley, how easy is it to blame credit crunch etc on what really is a lack of ambition and certainly a lack of will to spend mr Bonsers cash to invest in a half decent team/squad never going to change until we get new owner

“good value for money”, if that were the case we wouldn’t have averaged 4,700 last season.
Lets get our violin out for Whalley and Bonser. If things are tight we can expect Uncle Jeff to defer our rent payments until the economy picks up, oops, silly me, he’ll keep taking the money

Given my limited knowledge of Pension Funds I believe that rules dictate that the Fund, of which the stadium is a large portion, has to seek a rent for the property and therefore JB cannot stop or defer rent only sell the property for a market going rate.
The damage was done as soon as the ground was placed into his Pension Fund!!! We NEED a buyer but that’s going to be difficult in the current climate

Is there some irony in the headline “perils behind” ???
Tez, Cheers for the education :-)

While fans may feel that we need to find a buyer I’m not sure Mr. Bonser feels the same degree of urgency. I’m sure he’ll be able to bear the burden of continued payments into his pension fund.

Its good to see that Whalley and Bonser take into account the difficult situation companies are in when it comes to sponsership. Hopefully they will be just as sympathetic with the fans who continue to pay out their hard earned cash to watch the same old rubbish every week – does this mean Whalley and Bonser will be dropping the admission prices in this difficult economic climate.
After 25 years I have finally seen the light and will be spending my limited funds on a holiday with the family!!!

‘The world seemed a happier place last summer’!!! What planet is this joker on? I am sick to death of his constant bull. Why does he still think anyone actually believes anything he says?

Given the fact that we are going to be playing in one of the toughest 3rd division leagues in recent years and the credit crunch is hitting hard, it seems wise only to go for another season of consolidation; however if the squad is not improved and the performances are lacklustre, we are only going to loose as much money through lack of ticket sales, and probably find ourselves in the 4th division again.
I’m not looking for much this season, but loosing fans is certainly not the way forward and i’m sure the board only knows too well how hard it is to get people through the turnstiles.

I am sure that the powers that be at the club are aware how hard it is to get people through the turnstiles, it is just a pity that they are so incompetent that they are unable to come up with a decent idea between them of how to address the problem.
Numerous positive suggestions have been made on marginal websites and via fans meetings and the like but the club are unable or unwilling to take any of them on board.
