Kightly hopes squad will get games

Saturday 30th May 2009, 2:18PM BST.

Michael KightlyMichael Kightly insists Wolves’ fringe players such as Matt Hill and George Friend deserve a chance to be part of the club’s Premier League dream.

The winger believes the nucleus is already in place of a young, promising team who can prove themselves at the top level.

But the 23-year-old also reckons bit-part players such as 28-year-old Hill, who played 13 games in the Championship title win, and emerging 21-year-old fellow left-back Friend, who figured in just six, have earned the right to face players such as Cristiano Ronaldo next season.

Asked how many players were needed to help Wolves survive at the top level, Kightly said: “That’s up to the gaffer.

“I’d like to hope they would give the players who got us up a chance – players like Matt Hill and George Friend and those who don’t always get recognised.

“They’ve played their share of games on the way to the Premier League – and they’ll all want a crack at it, and I’m sure they will.”

Wolves have been linked with at least 30 players and have offered around £2.6m for Red Star Belgrade captain Nenad Milijas, according to the player’s agent.

Kightly believes the current squad will thrive on competition.

“We all know though we do need a bit more experience and a bit more quality to help us get through,” he said.

“But competition always helps and it’s always healthy. When you haven’t got that competition you can get a bit stale sometimes.

“But I think we’ve had that (competition for places) all the time since I’ve been here anyway.”

You can’t survive in the Premier on sentiment Michael Kightly!
The squad we have is simply not good enough to survive in the premiership in my opinion only e-banks and W/H (goalie) and maybe Foley who have the class for the premier, and if you are a realist like me you will agree.

l agree with MK the players have got us there and should enjoy the spoils. Some will be found wanting but l feel many will be able to move up to the higher level. being young and getting more experienced, most are full internationals anyway, l think MM will only need a couple new faces more to settle and encourage them. If we can keep this team together and stay in the premier we will get better and better. Up the Wolves.

I am torn on what Kights has said, the fringe players do deserve a run-out as they helped us get back to the promised land, but on the other hand, majority of the players aren’t prem quality.
Quite a bit of a predicament on MM hands, don’t you agree?

We can afford a bigger squad, so there’ll be some leeway before we have to trim, but in the end, Mick will let some go.
You can never tell who might step up – who’d've thought Keith Andrews would make a Premiership footballer ? – but it’s pretty obvious that George Friend has more of a chance than Matt Hill. George should still be getting better. Matt is probably already as good as he’s going to be.

I daresay that some will get the occasional run out but I suggest that we need at least 5 new regulars.
If we are at home first game the nucleus should be this :-
    Hennessey Foley Berra ? Elokobi Kites ? ? Jarvis Ebanks-Blake ?

Of these Hennessey Berra and Elokobi are the most suspect. The others I am sure are good enough!
