A former wartime refugee camp near Kidderminster could be transformed into a business and housing estate to help entrepreneurs starting up on their own.

Developers want to convert the old buildings into 22 units and nine affordable homes on the site off Butts Lane, Stone, which dates from the Second World War.

The units would offer work space as well as residential accommodation and it is hoped they will encourage fledgling businesses to get started.

Although the buildings were only constructed as a temporary measure they are described as “robust” and “worthy of retention”.

Plans have been submitted by Gloucestershire-based firm County to County Professional Ltd.

But there are concerns are growing the site is not ideal for such a scheme due to narrow access roads.

Some protesters say it would be better suited to more built up areas.

Blakedown and Chaddesley councillor Pauline Hayward said: “While I have nothing against the workshops, and such developments are needed in the area, I am concerned about the location.

“Butts Lane has very narrow access roads which could lead to problems with additional cars using them on a regular basis.

“This is something which needs to be looked at very closely. Workshops such as these would be better suited to nearby towns.”

The development also includes a community or meeting room.

The development is aimed at people who want to set up a new business but cannot afford to have separate premises.

A report from the firm says its hopes the development will help boost employment in the rural area and help support services in Stone.

The plans, which also includes car parking areas and a new access road, will go before Wyre Forest District Council planners on June 9.
