Troubled Lockmen oust chairman
Friday 29th May 2009, 8:21AM BST.
Troubled Willenhall Town have been granted a stay of execution after the club’s chairman was ousted – its committee has revealed.
Receivers are due to be called into the Noose Lane ground over a reported £60,000 debt to Marston’s brewery.
But a statement issued by the Committee of Willenhall Town FC voted to remove chairman Paul Garner and added that it now had until Monday before the receivers were called in.
It claimed Mr Garner had failed to comply with an ultimatum to meet with brewery officials on Wednesday.
The committee also reassured fans that even if receivers are called in on Monday, the club will live on.
It comes after hundreds joined a on-line support group set up for Willenhall Town on social networking website Facebook.
The committee’s statement said: “The Committee of Willenhall Town FC would like to say a huge thank you for the messages of support we have received over the last few days.
“The Facebook group continues to grow and includes not only members from all over the globe but also fans of rival teams. We are now pleased to give this overwhelming support some news on our cause.
“Marston’s have become aware of the committee’s plans and issued the chairman with an ultimatum to contact them by close of business on Wednesday.
“The chairman did not do this so Marston’s will now only deal with the committee.
“The committee have also met and voted to remove Mr Paul Garner from his position as chairman of Willenhall Town. The committee and Marston’s are now in negotiations to keep the club open and move it forward.
“To show their support for our campaign Marston’s have also agreed to delay the receivers until Monday.
“But the committee wish to point out that, should the receivers be called in this, will not mean the end of Willenhall Town.
“It will mean that the debts owed to various creditors are clear, so plans can be put into place to pay these creditors off and move Willenhall Town forward.”
It emerged this week that the club also owes Walsall Council £6,593, prompting finance chiefs to take legal action.
Hundreds of fans are backing a Facebook campaign to save the club, which was established in 1953.
More than 150 people have signed up to the already 200-strong group in the past two days.
Mr Garner was unavailable for comment.
