Kiely walks out of Republic squad

Friday 29th May 2009, 11:29AM BST.

7261352Albion goalkeeper Dean Kiely’s international future is in doubt after he walked out of the Republic of Ireland camp ahead of the match with Nigeria.

The 37-year-old withdrew from the squad after learning he would not figure in the fixture at Craven Cottage this evening.

Ireland coach Giovanni Trapottoni has refused to be drawn on the future of Kiely, who he coaxed out of international retirement to provide cover for No 1 Shay Given.

Kiely told the Italian he wanted to return home and spend time with his family, after being told Given and Coventry’s Keiren Westwood would share goalkeeping duties tonight.

Trapattoni’s preparations for the World Cup qualifier in Bulgaria next month have been disrupted, as he is now expected to call-up another goalkeeper.

He said: “I had to inform these new players that they can play. All the team accepts this situation, but there was some disappointment for Dean Kiely. He wanted to go with his family.

“If he stayed with us it would have better, but he wished to go. He said he was a bit disappointed, he thought he would have an opportunity. But we have other options.

“I’m a bit disappointed, but I have to respect the older players. But my job is to look forward at other situations.

“In the future we will see what happens.”

What is it with albion players? The above. Karl Hoefkens about the club and area. Paul Robinson on two seperate occasions to the supporters. Phillips and Gera wanting out, Koumas, Kamara, Mc Shane etc. The club really needs to get a hold of these pri-madonnas.

    The Real Bully Hoo.

He’s retired from internationals once, he was asked to come back, at 37 is he going to turn up to sit on the bench? No. Is he really worried about his international future? No. Do we care? No. He’s English anyway. Keep doing it for the Baggies Deano.
