Foley set for first Ireland cap

Wolves fans’ player of the year Kevin Foley will finally win his first Republic of Ireland cap.
The 24-year-old right-back has been given the nod from Irish coach Giovanni Trapattoni for tonight’s friendly against Nigeria at Fulham’s Craven Cottage, after being in the full squad for more than a year.
Foley is one of four new starters – all Championship players last season – for the game, with Preston pair Sean St Ledger – who was born in Birmingham – Eddie Nolan and Coventry striker Leon Best.
Trapattoni said: “I’ve informed the new lads that they’re playing and this is a big opportunity for them.

Foley gets his chance ahead of Paul McShane and Stephen Kelly, with Manchester United’s John O’Shea, who usually lines up at centre-back at international level, not starting after suffering Champions League final heartache against Barcelona.

The wide man said: “He deserves his chance. If he can get this cap then I’m sure he’ll be buzzing. He does deserve the recognition.”
