Wolves prepare to welcome guests

gen_speedway.jpgWolves welcome two unexpected speedway “guests” to Monmore Green next Monday – Joe Screen and Joe Haines.

Poole veteran Screen will guest for a rider half his age in Tai Woffinden, away in Germany on Great Britain under-21 World Cup duty.

Club number eight Haines will be guaranteed a big welcome, as he watches Wolves’ match against Lakeside just days after a major operation.

Screen, aged 36, has been virtually the only bright spot so far this year in Poole’s stuttering defence of their Elite League title, forcing his way into the Great Britain squad.

He scored a good eight points at Monmore earlier this season, when the Pirates were soundly beaten 58-34.

The popular Haines, just making his way in the sport at 17, must wear a halo head brace for up to four months after displacing a bone in his neck during a horror crash in a world under-21 round at Rye House.

He was discharged from hospital at the weekend.

Team manager Peter Adams said: “The good news is that Joe is home now. He’s going to come down here next Monday and we look forward to seeing him. But obviously he is going to be out for a long time.”

Wolves will have to nominate a new number eight and expect to do so soon.

Adams said: “We need some cover. We’re talking to two people at the minute.”
